Chapter 80 - GAZES IN TERMINAL 2F

CHARLES DE GAULLE AIRPORT, PARIS - NIGHT

The air in the arrivals terminal felt cold and sterile, cut through by announcements in three languages and the rumble of luggage trolleys. Elara stood near the exit, Alisha clutching her hand tightly. Beside her, Kael stood calmly, though his posture was slightly stiff.

David emerged from the arrivals gate with quick steps. He wore a long black coat, his face looking thinner but his eyes sharp. His gaze immediately found Elara, then Alisha, and finally—paused on Kael. His expression changed momentarily: not hostility, but a deep wariness, like a lion assessing a newcomer in his territory.

"Papa!" Alisha released Elara's hand and ran.

David bent down, lifting Alisha into his embrace. "My sweetheart," he whispered, closing his eyes briefly as he inhaled the lingering baby scent in his daughter's hair. "Papa missed you so much."

"Papa, look! Uncle Kael bought me this!" Alisha showed a colorful bracelet circling her wrist. "And we went to so many places! There was a park with little boats, a museum with huge paintings, and..."

David listened with a faint smile, but his eyes never truly left Kael. "That's very kind of you, Mr. Kael," he said, finally addressing him directly. "For watching over the two greatest treasures of my life."

Kael nodded politely. "They were easy to watch over, David."

A POSSESSIVE EMBRACE

David set Alisha down gently, then stepped toward Elara. He opened his arms. For a moment, Elara hesitated—clearly visible in her furrowed eyes—but finally she stepped forward.

David hugged her, not a light friendly hug, but a tight, deep, claiming embrace. His head tilted, and over Elara's shoulder, his eyes met Kael's. The message was clear, unspoken: She's mine. Always.

Elara could feel the tension in David's body. She pulled away slowly. "Was your journey okay?" she asked, her voice flat.

"Better now," David replied, his eyes still fixed on her. "Much better now."

ALISHA'S REQUEST

"Mama, I need the bathroom," Alisha whined, tugging at Elara's dress.

Elara glanced between David and Kael."I'll... take Alisha for a moment."

"We'll be fine here,"David said in a calm voice that only heightened the tension.

As Elara and Alisha disappeared toward the restrooms, the two men were left standing facing each other amidst the airport bustle. A tense silence filled the space between them.

A PRIVATE CONVERSATION

David was the first to break the silence. "Thank you, Kael. For everything. I know... the situation wasn't ideal."

"You don't need to thank me,"Kael replied, his hands clasped in front of him. "I did that for Elara. And for Alisha."

David nodded, his eyes scanning Kael from head to toe. "You still love her."

"And you're still asking?"Kael didn't deny it. "But this isn't about my love. It's about what's best for her."

"I will give her what's best," David said, his voice low but full of conviction. "I've cleared my name. Our home is waiting. Our real life is waiting."

"Does Elara want that'real life' again?" Kael asked with a calmness that was unsettling. "Or does she want something new? Something that doesn't remind her of betrayal and heartache?"

David clenched his fists at his sides. "I know I hurt her. But I also know we had real love. Eight years can't be erased just like that."

"Eight years also can't be a reason to stay in suffering,"Kael replied softly. "I know Elara well, David. Perhaps better than you in some ways. I know she needs peace. And for the past two weeks, I gave her that."

HONEST ADMISSIONS

David took a deep breath. "I saw her photos on social media. She was smiling. Laughing. I... haven't seen her like that in a long time." Pain sliced through his voice. "But that doesn't change the fact that she's my wife. That we have a family."

"Family isn't just about a marriage certificate,David," Kael said. "Family is about where someone feels most at home. And here in Paris, Elara felt at home with me."

The words felt like a slap. David stared at the floor for a moment, gathering strength. "I will fix it. Slowly. I will earn her trust back."

"And if she doesn't give it to you?If she decides her wounds are too deep?"

"You're hoping that's what happens, aren't you?" David looked directly at him.

Kael sighed."I hope Elara is happy. If that's with you, then I will step back. But if it's with me..." he paused, "...then I will be there for her, forever."

ELARA'S RETURN

Elara returned with Alisha. She could feel the tension still hanging in the air like smoke. "Is everything okay?" she asked, looking at both of them.

"Perfectly fine,"David answered, a smile returning to his face but not reaching his eyes. "Kael and I were just... expressing gratitude."

Kael approached Elara. "I'll leave now. Give you all some space." He pressed Elara's hand gently. "Remember what we talked about. Listen to your heart."

David watched the exchange, his jaw tightening.

Kael bent down, kissed Alisha's forehead. "Goodbye, sweetheart. Take care of your Mama."

"Uncle Kael is leaving?"Alisha asked sadly.

"Just for now,"Kael answered, but his eyes were on Elara, as if asking: Is it really just for now?

As Kael turned and walked out of the terminal, David stepped closer to Elara. "The car is waiting. I've also arranged a hotel. Or... if you prefer, we can fly back tonight."

Elara gazed at the door where Kael had disappeared, then looked at David, then at Alisha who was growing sleepy.

"The hotel," she finally said. "I need time to think."

"Understandable,"David replied, forcing a smile. "We have all the time in the world."

But as they walked toward the exit, David glanced once more in Kael's distant direction. He knew this battle wasn't over. Natasha might have been defeated, but a new enemy—in the form of Elara's ex-lover who still loved her deeply—had emerged.

And this time, the weapons he had to use weren't legal evidence or money, but something more fragile and precious: Elara's love, which might no longer be entirely his.

Inside the luxury car gliding toward central Paris, Alisha slept on Elara's lap. David sat in the front, occasionally glancing through the rearview mirror at his wife's face as she stared out the window, her thoughts clearly elsewhere—or with someone else.

Paris glittered outside, beautiful and indifferent. But inside that car, three wounded hearts embarked on a new journey no less perilous than the legal battle they had just left behind.
