We spent the night in the holding cell, on cold concrete, the fluorescent lights buzzing.
Tony and I were separated into different facilities. Men's and women's detention.
This was my first time in jail. A first time of being truly arrested and accused as a criminal.
The other inmates watched with curiosity, some hostile.
"You're that Marvin woman. Rich bitch who stole people's money."
I kept my head down. I didn't engage, only tried to survive.
I thought of Rose and Hector. What were they thinking right now?
How scared were they, and did they believe we're guilty?
Did Hector think this proves everything he feared about us?
We had a bail hearing at the court in the morning.
They brought Tony in separately, both of us in orange jumpsuits and handcuffed.
Our eyes met across the courtroom. He looked exhausted and scared, but tried to be strong.
