We raced back to Manhattan at full speed.
The sirens blared, lights flashed, broke every traffic law, and Katherine was right beside me. Her face was white as she stared at her phone.
And I knew that something tragic had happened again.
It was the live feed from Susan's estate, now engulfed in flames. The second feed showed explosions at Marvin Industries headquarters, with windows shattering and floors collapsing.
"Everything's burning," she whispered. "While we chased shadows."
The Twelve played us perfectly; they sent us after Sean Dicklan in an empty building, which was an obvious trap.
While we were there, they struck everywhere else in perfectly coordinated, synchronized attacks. This was truly devastating.
"How long until we arrive?" Katherine asked, her voice shaky.
"Fifteen minutes."
"That might be too late."
I gripped the steering wheel tighter. "Everyone has evacuated. They're safe."
"You don't know that."
She's right. I don't.
