Late that night, Katherine and I are exhausted.
We're sitting on the floor of our apartment. Chinese takeout containers were spread around us. Too tired to sit at the table like civilized people.
"This is glamorous," Katherine says, gesturing to the mess. "Billionaire crime fighters eating lo mein on the floor."
Despite everything, I smile. "We're very sophisticated."
"Remember when I thought your life was all champagne and fancy restaurants? Hotels and clubs?"
"It was. Then I met you and dragged you into chaos."
"You love the chaos."
"I love you." I steal a dumpling from her container. "The chaos is just a bonus."
"Hey! That was mine!"
"Community property. We're engaged."
"That's not how engagement works!" She's laughing now, trying to steal it back.
We're wrestling over dumplings like children. It's ridiculous, but exactly what we need after the day we've had.
She wins and pops the dumpling in her mouth victoriously.
"I let you win," I say.
"Sure you did."
