The city smelled of dust and preservation wards and ten thousand years of nothing.
Ren stood on Vor'anthel's outer wall, hands clasped behind his back, soulblades a familiar weight across his shoulders, and breathed in the scent of a place that had been waiting for purpose longer than most civilisations lasted. The obsidian architecture rose around him in clean, angular lines — towers and halls and residential blocks carved from the same black stone that formed the bones of the demon realm, their surfaces still catching the twilight in reflections that would have been beautiful if anyone had been alive to see them.
