Chain ran over iron at the weighbridge, a long dry rattle and then a knock as the plate settled, and a man somewhere out of sight called a number.
Vukan heard it before he saw the town. On foot he had come down the last of the Kaelport road, with his satchel on his hip and his coat buttoned to the throat, and the sound came up the hill to meet him through the cold. Then the cart went off the plate, and another came on, and the chain ran again.
