Zara read what had happened.
She had watched Seris hollow four sections simultaneously and the chain technique had produced zero damage—the light firing outward into the arena space harmlessly, the force spending itself against intangible matter, nothing landing on solid surface.
The answer Seris had found was real.
Hollow the entry section. The light goes out rather than in.
Which meant Zara needed bursts that Seris couldn't hollow the entry section for—bursts that arrived before the hollow could form, or bursts that arrived at sections Seris was already using for something else.
She fired at Seris's legs while Seris was moving.
Moving legs—committed to the stride, the foot down and weight-bearing—couldn't be hollowed without stopping the movement entirely. Hollowing a weight-bearing leg removed the ability to bear weight, the intangible limb unable to push against the floor. Seris would have to choose between continuing to advance and defending her legs.
