I woke up knowing today was the day.
Closing arguments in Damien's trial. The last chance for both sides to make their case before the jury decided his fate.
I couldn't eat breakfast. Couldn't focus on anything. Just paced my cell, counting the minutes.
"You're gonna wear a hole in the floor," Tanya called from her cell. "What's got you so worked up?"
"Closing arguments today. For someone I care about."
"The Cross guy? Yeah, I heard his testimony yesterday was intense. Guard said he basically admitted to everything."
"He was being honest."
"Honest gets you convicted, girl. Should've lied."
"He's not that kind of person."
"Then he's screwed."
I wanted to argue, but she might be right.
The morning dragged. Every minute felt like an hour.
At 10 AM, I knew closing arguments were starting. Morrison would go first, painting Damien as a calculating criminal. Then Robert would try to salvage something from the wreckage.
