Cherreads

Chapter 54 - Chapter 54

I went with them to the police station, completely unprepared for the sharp slap that greeted me.

It was hot. It burned. It hurt.

Tears welled in my eyes as I slowly looked up at Rachelle, whose gaze was blazing with fury as she stared down at me.

"How dare you?" she shouted. "How could you do this to your own boss? You're paid well enough, aren't you? So why would you still steal from the company?"

Every pair of eyes in the room was on me—especially Ken's, Sir Asher's, Carl's, Ms. Akeshia's… and his.

Francis.

"Answer me!"

"I don't know what you're talking about," I said, but before I could finish, a thick folder slammed into my face.

Papers scattered across the floor.

"These!" she yelled. "These are the proofs of what you've done!"

My hands trembled as I bent down and picked one up. The moment I read it, my knees nearly gave out.

It was a bank receipt—showing a massive amount of money transferred into my account.

I grabbed another paper.

Photographs.

Pictures of me entering Francis's office, frozen in moments that made it look like I was tampering with something inside.

"N-no… this isn't true…" My voice broke as tears filled my eyes.

Fear wrapped itself around my chest—fear of their reactions, fear of their judgment.

"Please believe me," I cried. "I have nothing to do with this."

My gaze shifted to Ken. He stood silently at the side, unable to look me in the eye.

"K-Ken… please," I begged. "You know me. Please believe me."

He took a step forward—but Rachelle stopped him.

"Stop right there, Ken!" she snapped. "Don't go near that gold digger! Let her rot in jail! Don't you dare let her out—do you hear me?!"

Rachelle's men were about to drag me away when the one person I wanted to defend me finally spoke.

"Let her go."

The command was cold. Final.

I looked at him—but his eyes held no warmth.

"Don't hurt her," Francis said flatly.

"L, what are you doing—?!"

"Let's go back," he said. "Leave her alone."

And just like that, he turned his back on me.

Walked away.

Away from me. Away from us.

Something inside my chest shattered, and the tears I had been holding back finally fell.

What did I ever do to deserve this?

I did nothing wrong.

So why?

Why was this happening to me again?
