Chapter 25 - Chapter Five: The Armband and the Call

Khali sat alone on his bed in the camp hostel, boots neatly placed by the wall, Nigeria jersey folded beside him.His mind was still racing from the assistant coach's words.

A private meeting. Alone.

That was never normal.

A knock came.

"Khali," a voice said. "Coach is ready."

The Surprise Decision

The head coach stood by the window when Khali entered. He didn't turn immediately.

"You grew up playing in dust," the coach finally said."You learned discipline in Europe.""You listen more than you speak."

Khali stayed silent.

The coach turned and held something green in his hand.

The captain's armband.

"Tomorrow," he said, "you will captain the team in the friendly. Not because you are the best — but because you make others better."

Khali's breath caught.

"Me, sir?"

The coach nodded."Leadership isn't noise. It's responsibility. Don't disappoint me."

Khali accepted the armband with trembling hands.

Outside the office, Bello was waiting.

He saw Khali's face.

And he knew.

"They chose you," Bello said quietly.

Khali nodded. "For this match."

Bello smiled — not forced, not bitter.

"Good," he said. "Then lead well."

But deep inside, both of them felt the shift.

The Match

The next day, Khali walked onto the pitch first.

The armband tight on his arm.The flag on his chest. The weight of a nation on his shoulders.

He organized the midfield.Calmed arguments.Encouraged the younger players.

Nigeria won 2–0.

After the match, senior players patted his back.

"Captain," they said.

Khali smiled — but his phone buzzed in his pocket.

MAMA.

The Call from Home

That night, Khali answered the video call.

His mother's face filled the screen, warm and serious at the same time.

"My son," she said, "I saw you today. You wore the armband."

Khali smiled. "Yes, Mama."

She nodded proudly — then her tone changed.

"There is something we must discuss."

Khali's smile faded.

"In Zangola," she continued gently, "the family has been talking. You are growing. You are respected now."

She paused.

"There is a good girl. From a good home. We believe it is time you start thinking about marriage."

The word landed heavy.

"Mama…" Khali began, choosing his words carefully."My career is just starting. I'm in the national team. City—"

She raised her hand softly.

"I am not forcing you," she said."But remember — fame runs fast. Family stays."

Silence stretched between them.

Khali looked at the armband lying beside his bed.

Captain.Footballer.Son.

"I will think about it," he said finally.

His mother smiled. "That is all I ask."

Night Thoughts

Later, Khali sat by the window, city lights flickering outside.

On the pitch, he was trusted to lead men.

At home, he was being asked to lead a family.

His phone buzzed again.

A message from Bello:

"Captain today. Big responsibilities, huh?"

Khali typed back:

"Bigger than football."

Bello replied with a single line:

"Welcome to manhood."

Khali leaned back, exhaling slowly.

The game was changing.

Not just on the field.
