-------

The man in black stared in shock at Mega Tyranitar.

For a moment he didn't know what to say.

He only felt that everything was far too difficult.

Why had he come to recruit Cain?

First, he had shown the real way of using the alternate space.

Very well, Cain had snatched it away as if it were his own and turned it into his personal domain.

Then he displayed the special energy of the Sacred Church, painfully sacrificing one of his divine stones so that his Alakazam could undergo a special evolution.

Perfect, Cain had that too.

And what's more, it seemed even stronger than his.

At least in terms of energy intensity, when Tyranitar performed its special evolution, the force was much denser.

Too difficult.

Really too difficult.

The man in black revealed a bitter grimace.

But soon, that bitterness was replaced by frenzy.

"Impossible! I don't believe it! You're using Hypnosis to trick me!"

"Alakazam, Psycho Cut!" he shouted hysterically.

But Alakazam did indeed feel the mortal threat emanating from Mega Tyranitar.

Clenching his teeth, he formed dozens of psychic blades that tore through the air, hurling toward Tyranitar.

"Tyranitar, Dark Pulse," Cain said calmly.

A field brimming with sinister energy exploded from Tyranitar, far more intense than before.

Alakazam's psychic blades lost part of their strength even before reaching him, worn away by that dark aura.

And when they finally struck Tyranitar...

Boom, boom!

The blades bounced off as if they had struck an indestructible diamond.

Alakazam, suspended in the air, was immediately swept away by the wave of dark energy and sent flying.

He rolled several times across the ground.

"Precipice Blades!"

Mega Tyranitar's abdomen glowed red; while executing the move, the "Ω" symbol was not so visible, but the force was terrifying.

From the ground emerged a stone column much thicker and sharper than before, even laced with traces of burning magma.

Boom!

The stunned Mega Alakazam couldn't react before being pierced by the move Precipice Blades.

Kaboom!

The explosion rumbled, with a power increasingly resembling Groudon's.

The impact hurled Alakazam's body into the air, straight toward Tyranitar, who clearly controlled the trajectory.

Dazed, with his head spinning, Alakazam could barely hold on.

His psychic power was immense, but his body... weak, even after Mega Evolution.

Bang!

He was caught in one swipe by Tyranitar's hand.

Like a helpless chick, with no ability to resist.

A slight shake of his arm was enough; the dark energy coursed through his body and Alakazam's last spark of consciousness faded.

Alakazam fell unconscious.

At that very instant, the energy of Mega Evolution dispersed, vanishing into the alternate space.

And, whether by accident or intent, Tyranitar felt part of that energy flow into his body.

Cain noticed it too.

But since Tyranitar showed no abnormality, and his system detected no strange changes, he chose not to worry further.

Perhaps that energy had found a better destination.

The man in black stared blankly at his Alakazam, now in its normal form.

Inside, he was in utter chaos. His face was ashen, hopeless. He didn't call out any other Pokémon.

Alakazam was his strongest Pokémon, and yet it had been crushed by Tyranitar.

His greatest card, Mega Evolution, had proven useless.

Bang!

Tyranitar hurled Alakazam at the man's feet, his partner's body falling limp like a sack.

Cain frowned as he looked at him.

The scan from his system revealed that Alakazam's physical condition was now even weaker than before.

Almost as if he were... malnourished.

"Could it be that a defective Mega Evolution consumes the Pokémon's body?" Cain thought.

No wonder he had seemed so frail from the start, even though he carried himself arrogantly and haughtily.

Now he understood why.

Tyranitar's rock energy activated, and layers of sand crept up to cover the man in black's body.

Soon he was completely wrapped, unable to move anything but his head.

Once certain he couldn't escape, Cain slowly walked forward until he stood in front of him.

"A few questions," Cain said.

"The first: Kagen, in this tournament—does he have any connection with your Sacred Church?"

He didn't ask first about Mega Evolution, but rather about Kagen's sudden appearance.

The man looked at him with complicated eyes.

In this situation, he was the fish on the butcher's block.

He accepted without resisting, nodding. "Yes."

"Is he an official member of yours? Does he have psychic powers? Can he perform that special evolution?" Cain pressed.

This was even more important than the explanation about Mega Evolution.

Psychic powers didn't concern him, but if Kagen could mega evolve his Pokémon, then Cain would have to seriously consider when to publicly reveal the information about Mega Evolution.

Otherwise...

With the discovery of the Fairy type already changing the world, adding Mega Evolution would be an enormous impact. But for his own benefit, Cain had to do it at the right time.

The man in black hesitated for a moment, but chose to be brutally honest.

If he suffered, then others should too.

"He was recruited recently. He's a hidden one with psychic talent, but he hadn't awakened yet. The emissary helped him awaken, but he cannot perform the special evolution. Perhaps, if he achieves good results in the tournament, he'll receive a reward."

His certainty that Kagen could not mega evolve was absolute.

The Sacred Church was extremely strict with the distribution of divine stones.

Only after overcoming numerous trials and completing important missions would they be granted.

He himself had only received three in his entire life.

On this occasion, the white emissary had promised him two stones if he succeeded in recruiting Cain, and one more for each genius on the list—like Steven and the others—that he eliminated.

That's why he had come so quickly to find him.

A mission with a reward of two stones was far too rare.

"Then why has Kagen's strength increased so much?" Cain asked, intrigued.

The man in black smiled coldly.

"Hmph, he's ambitious too. He always hid his strength, that's why the emissary chose him. But even hidden, he wasn't this strong before. Surely the emissary used divine power to strengthen his Pokémon. He's a lucky one."
