Adam stood frozen in the center of the decaying room, his heart racing as he scanned every inch of the floor and walls for the gift Kai had mentioned.
His eyes darted from the corners of the ceiling to the shadows behind the rusted pipes, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary.
Just as he was about to turn away in frustration, his gaze snagged on the small metal nail that had fallen to the floor when he ripped the note away.
Next to it lay the thin, nearly invisible wire that he had carelessly ignored just moments ago.
Now that he was looking at it with focused intensity, he realized the wire was quite long and stretched taut across the floorboards, snaking its way toward the back of the building.
With a cold dread settling in his stomach, Adam began to follow the mechanical trail.
The wire led him through a narrow hallway and stopped at the threshold of a heavy wooden door.
This was the one room he hadn't searched yet, the final corner of the third floor.
