Adrian's heart stopped and his body froze.
His brain seemed to have short-circuited so that he couldn't respond immediately.
The sentence lingered in the air between them, fragile and dangerous, like a truth spoken too soon.
No, like a shocking lie everyone wished to be true.
He swallowed again…already lost count of how many times he had done that, yet it wasn't enough to wipe away the confusion swirling in his mind.
What?
The boy who placed the mark?
That was impossible.
His thoughts raced with questions that demanded urgent answers.
He needed clarification. How and why was it him?
And why didn't he remember such an important detail after all these years?
Confusion swirled in his eyes as he lifted his gaze to meet hers just as the heavy, unbearable silence clothed the room.
