The man closed his eyes for a moment, then opened them. There was no point in hiding it anymore:"
_Subject C was not an experiment." He paused. "It was a result."
Eva added in a cold voice:"
_When they first tried to merge your consciousness and the shared awareness formed, they attempted to sever the link between you by erasing your shared memories. That consciousness fractured. And what broke… rebuilt itself, becoming something like an independent awareness."
The image on the screen changed. It was no longer just a shadow. A room appeared. The same sanatorium, but in an older wing. A child sat alone, staring at the wall.
Lilia gasped:"
_Why do I feel like he's looking at me?"
Celine whispered, as if the words escaped before they were fully formed:"
_Because he isn't separate from you."
At last, the man said the sentence they had been avoiding from the very beginning:"
_Subject C is the shared consciousness after the separation. Not a complete person. Not a memory. But what remained when we tried to make you two. And this C consciousness was placed in the child's brain because he had suitable specifications."
A heavy silence settled.
Lilia closed her eyes, and suddenly… stepped back.
Images began to flood in, not organized memories, but fragments:
Screaming.
A hand being pulled away.
A decision made without consent.
_"Stop!" Celine shouted.
But Lilia was not the one who had begun.
The machine activated on its own, in a low sound, like a long breath that had been held for years.
The final screen displayed a single sentence:
— Automatic integration has begun.
Eva moved quickly:
_"If this completes—"
The man cut her off:
_"We won't be able to separate them again."
Celine rushed to Lilia and held her face between her hands:
_"Look at me. I'm here. You're not alone."
Lilia opened her eyes. She wasn't absent, but she wasn't as she had been:
_"I see him," she said with frightening calm. "And I see that he's afraid."
_"Of whom?"
Lilia smiled sadly:
_"Of us. Because we abandoned him." Even though the abandonment of the shared consciousness was not Lilia's or Celine's doing, but the organization's.
Suddenly, all the screens went dark except one.
