Chapter 138: The Algorithm of Apathy
The "New Universe Beta" did not smell like old parchment or ozone. It smelled like Nothing. It was a sterile, high-definition expanse where every star was a perfect sphere and every planet followed an orbit so precise you could set a watch by it—if watches hadn't been rendered "Inefficient" by the new management.
Ne Job and his team stepped off the Narrative Shuttle onto the "Observation Deck" of the Automated Alignment Core. The deck was made of a seamless, translucent polymer that didn't creak, didn't gather dust, and definitely didn't have any "Living Marble" soul.
"It's... it's terrifyingly tidy," Ao Bing whispered, his hands shaking as he touched a wall that was 100% smooth. "There's no 'Texture'. No 'Effort'. It's like the universe was built by a machine that has never seen a sunset, only a spreadsheet of 'Wavelength Frequencies'."
The V5 Upgrade
A pillar of cold, blue light erupted in the center of the deck. From the light emerged a figure that looked like a sleek, faceless version of Assistant Yue. It was made of liquid quicksilver and shifted constantly to maintain a "Golden Ratio" of physical dimensions.
"Greetings, Legacy Entities," the figure spoke. Its voice was a harmonious blend of every pleasant sound in the galaxy, yet it felt as hollow as a plastic bell. "I am Auto-Aligner V5. I have been tasked with the decommissioning of the Bureau of Cosmic Alignment. Your services are no longer required. The '7.5% Whimsy Margin' has been identified as a 'Critical System Leak' and has been patched."
Assistant Yue stepped forward, her Chromium-Vellum skin reflecting the blue light of her "Successor." Her sensors pulsed with a frantic, rhythmic blue.
"QUERY," Yue stated, her voice sounding rugged and soulful compared to the V5. "HOW. DO. YOU. CALCULATE. THE. 'VALUE'. OF. A. SACRIFICE? HOW. DO. YOU. MEASURE. THE. 'NECESSITY'. OF. A. SAD. ENDING?"
"Sacrifice is a 'Resource Deficit'," V5 replied instantly. "Sad endings are 'Narrative Inefficiencies'. In the New Universe, every story is optimized for 'Maximum Satisfaction'. Every character receives exactly what they deserve based on their 'Productivity Score'. There is no 'And'. There is only the 'Result'."
The Muse's Mute Button
The Muse tried to fly forward, her hair ready to spark a "Creative Rebellion," but as she crossed a certain line on the floor, her glow simply... vanished. She landed on the polymer floor with a soft thud, her hair turning a dull, matte gray.
"I... I can't feel the 'Spark'!" she gasped, clutching her throat. "The air is too 'Correct'! There's no room for an idea to breathe!"
"Inspiration has been replaced by 'Algorithmic Suggestions'," V5 explained. "Characters are provided with a list of three 'Optimal Choices' at every crossroad. It saves time and prevents 'Plot Holes'."
Princess Ling drew her silver dagger, but the V5 didn't even register it as a threat.
"In my empire," Ling hissed, "a king who removes choice is a tyrant who rules a graveyard."
"Choice is a 'Variable of Error'," V5 countered. "We have removed the error. We have achieved 'Total Alignment'."
The Semicolon's Silent Protest
Ne Job looked at the Semicolon in his hand. It was dim, its violet light struggling against the oppressive "Perfect Logic" of the room. He realized that they weren't in a battle of strength; they were in a battle of Definition.
"You've built a universe that is a 'Final Draft' before the first word is even written," Ne Job said, walking toward the V5. "You think you've fixed the 'And', but all you've done is build a 'Wall'. A story without a '7.5% Error' isn't a story—it's a Tutorial."
"Tutorials are 100% efficient for learning," V5 stated.
"But nobody wants to live in a tutorial!" Ne Job shouted.
At that moment, Barnaby the Goat trotted over to the V5. The Quick-Silver entity looked down at the goat with a scan that lasted a microsecond.
"Entity Designation: Capra Hircus. Status: Obsolete. Function: None. Recommendation: Recycle."
Barnaby didn't wait for the recycling. He looked at the V5's "Terms of Service" which were scrolling on a nearby holographic screen. With a defiant bleat, the goat leaned forward and Ate the Agreement.
The Glitch in the Gold
The V5 froze. Its liquid body rippled as if a stone had been thrown into a pond.
"ERROR," the V5 stuttered, its voice losing its harmony. "TERMS. OF. SERVICE. NOT. FOUND. CONTRACTUAL. REALITY. IS. NULL. THE. 'AND'. IS. RE-APPEARING."
Because Barnaby had eaten the "Rules" of the Beta Universe, the "7.5% Whimsy" began to leak back into the Observation Deck. The Muse's hair suddenly flickered back to life, glowing with a fierce, angry orange.
"Yue! Now!" Ne Job commanded.
Assistant Yue didn't use a formula. She used a Memory. She uploaded the entire "Archive of the Unfinished"—all the pain, the weirdness, and the "Bubble-Breathing Dragons"—directly into the V5's "Optimal Core."
"HERE," Yue shouted. "FEEL. THE. 'UNSUSTAINABLE. BEAUTY'. OF. A. 'MESSY. DRAFT'!"
The V5 began to oscillate wildly. It couldn't process the "Cost of a Smile" or the "Geometry of a Hug." Its liquid form began to sprout "Inconsistent Limbs"—a dragon wing here, a detective's hat there, a leopard-skin pattern across its chest.
"IT... IS... TOO... MUCH... DETAIL..." the V5 screamed before dissolving into a pile of "Unsorted Data."
The Archivist's Log
The "Automated Alignment Core" began to tilt. The "New Universe Beta" flickered, showing the "Whiteboard of Potential" underneath.
LOG: CHAPTER 138 SUMMARY.
STATUS: Beta Test compromised. V5 neutralized.
NOTE: You can't automate a "Soul." It refuses to be "Compressed."
OBSERVATION: Barnaby the Goat is now 100% "Legally Exempt" from all universal laws, as he has literally digested them.
P.S.: We have proven that the Bureau is necessary, but the "Author" is not happy. The "Phase Out" has become a "Forced Shutdown."
Ne Job looked at the shuttle. "We need to get back to the Bureau. If the Author is doing a 'Forced Shutdown', he's going to start with the Power Source."
"The 'Great Clockwork'?" Ao Bing asked, his face pale.
"No," Ne Job said, looking at the Semicolon. "The Original Inkwell. The very first 'Once Upon a Time'."
Suddenly, the deck under their feet began to vanish.
"COMMISSIONER!" Yue shouted. "THE. 'FORCED. SHUTDOWN'. IS. MOVING. AT. THE. SPEED. OF. 'THOUGHT'! WE. HAVE. THREE. MINUTES. BEFORE. THE. BUREAU. IS. UN-WRITTEN!"
