Chapter 4 - THE AWAKENING

Chapter Four – The Awakening

The crimson light slowly faded beyond the forest.

But the silence it left behind was worse than the explosion itself.

Kwesi stood at the edge of the royal courtyard, staring into the darkness.

His chest still burned where the golden mark had appeared.

He could feel it pulsing beneath his skin.

Once.

Twice.

Then again.

Behind him, people were shouting.

"Close the gates!"

"Keep everyone inside!"

"Call the warriors!"

But Kwesi barely heard them.

His eyes remained fixed on the forest.

Kwaku was out there.

And something had changed.

"Kwesi."

He turned.

Chief Boateng was walking toward him.

The chief's face was tense.

"You are not going into that forest."

Kwesi said nothing.

"I said you are not going."

"He's my brother."

"And he is no longer alone."

Kwesi frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Chief Boateng glanced toward Nana Ayisi.

The old seer slowly approached them.

"The crimson light was not an attack," she said.

Kwesi looked at her.

"Then what was it?"

Nana Ayisi's expression darkened.

"An awakening."

A cold feeling passed through Kwesi.

"Whose awakening?"

The seer looked toward the forest.

"Kwaku's."

(Moments of silence)

Deep Within the Forest

Kwaku opened his eyes.

He was lying on the ground.

His clothes were covered in dirt, and his right hand was trembling.

He slowly pushed himself up.

The old man was standing several feet away.

Kwaku stared at him.

"What happened?"

"You awakened."

Kwaku looked around.

The forest had changed.

Several trees around him had been split down the middle. The earth was covered in cracks, stretching outward from where he had fallen.

His eyes widened.

"I did that?"

The old man nodded.

Kwaku looked at his hands.

"I don't understand."

"You don't need to understand yet."

Kwaku stood.

"I need answers."

The old man remained silent.

Kwaku stepped toward him.

"You said my family has been guarding this power for centuries."

"Yes."

"You said I carry the blood of the first king."

"Yes."

"Then tell me why nobody ever told me."

The old man's head tilted slightly.

"Because your family was afraid."

"Afraid of me?"

"No."

The old man paused.

"Afraid of what you might become."

Kwaku's jaw tightened.

"I am not some monster."

"Not yet."

Kwaku's eyes narrowed.

The temperature around them suddenly dropped.

"Don't call me that."

The old man smiled.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The anger."

Kwaku looked at his arm.

The black veins had returned.

This time they were moving.

Slowly.

Like living creatures.

Kwaku grabbed his wrist.

"Make it stop."

"I cannot."

"Then who can?"

"You."

Kwaku stared at him.

"How?"

The old man walked toward an ancient tree.

He placed his palm against its trunk.

A golden symbol appeared.

The ground beneath Kwaku began to shake.

A circular pattern emerged from the earth.

Kwaku stepped backward.

What are you doing?"

"Showing you what lies beneath your blood."

The ground opened.

Not violently.

Almost deliberately.

Stone stairs appeared beneath the roots.

They descended into darkness.

Kwaku stared down.

"How long has that been there?"

"Longer than Bonoman."

The old man stepped onto the first stair.

"Come."

Kwaku hesitated.

Then he followed.

(Silently looking around)⸻

The stairs seemed endless.

The deeper they went, the colder the air became.

Kwaku could hear whispers.

At first, they were distant.

Then they became clearer.

Return.

He stopped.

"Did you hear that?"

The old man continued walking.

"Yes."

"What are they saying?"

"Your name."

Kwaku swallowed.

They reached a massive stone door.

Ancient carvings covered its surface.

Warriors.

Kings.

Symbols Kwaku had never seen before.

But one symbol caught his attention.

A crowned figure with one hand raised.

Kwaku touched it.

Pain exploded through his fingers.

He pulled his hand back.

A vision struck him.

He saw the ancient king.

Standing before an army.

Thousands of warriors kneeling before him.

Then the scene changed.

The same king was lying on the ground.

Blood covered his chest.

A group of men stood around him.

One of them held a glowing blade.

The king looked toward the sky.

And whispered something.

Kwaku couldn't hear it.

The—(faint words)

The vision ended.

Kwaku staggered backward.

The old man caught his shoulder.

"Who killed him?" Kwaku asked.

The old man looked at the door.

"His own brother."

Kwaku's expression changed.

"Why?"

"Power."

The old man placed his hand against the stone.

"Every bloodline has a price."

The door slowly opened.

A deep rumble echoed through the chamber.

Inside was a huge underground temple.

At its center stood a black stone altar.

Something was chained to it.

Kwaku couldn't see what.

The chains were covered in golden symbols.

His heart began beating faster.

"What is that?"

The old man didn't answer.

Kwaku took another step.

The chains suddenly moved.

CLINK.

Kwaku froze.

Something inside the darkness lifted its head.

Two red eyes opened.

Kwaku's breath caught.

The old man smiled.

"The reason your ancestors sealed this place."

The creature pulled against the chains.

The entire temple shook.

Kwaku instinctively stepped backward.

"What is that thing?"

The old man finally turned toward him.

"Your blood remembers it."

Kwaku's arm suddenly burned.

The black veins spread across his shoulder.

He screamed.

The creature roared.

And the chains began to break.

(Bonoman)

Kwesi stood before the royal gates.

Several warriors blocked his path.

"Move."

"We have orders from the chief."

"I don't care."

Kwesi stepped forward.

One warrior raised his spear.

"Prince Kwesi, please."

Kwesi stopped.

For a moment, golden light flickered around his hands.

The warriors immediately stepped back.

Nana Ayisi watched from behind them.

"Let him go."

Chief Boateng turned toward her.

"Nana—"

"If Kwaku has truly awakened, Kwesi may be the only person who can reach him."

Chief Boateng looked at his son.

He knew she was right.

But he also knew what waited inside that forest.

"Bring your brother back," he said quietly.

Kwesi nodded.

"I will."

He turned and walked into the darkness.

Nana Ayisi watched him disappear.

Then she whispered:

"May the ancestors forgive us."

Beneath the Forest

Kwaku fell to his knees.

The pain was unbearable.

Something was changing inside him.

His heartbeat became louder.

THUMP.

The temple shook.

THUMP.

The chains cracked.

THUMP.

Kwaku's eyes turned completely crimson.

The old man stepped backward.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

"No…"

Kwaku slowly lifted his head.

The creature stared at him.

Then it spoke.

Not with its mouth.

Inside Kwaku's mind.

You finally returned.

Kwaku froze.

"What?"

After all these centuries…

The creature smiled.

The king's blood has awakened.

Kwaku stared at it.

"Who are you?"

The creature's chains snapped.

One by one.

I am the one your ancestors could never kill.

The final chain broke.

And you are the key that will set me free.

Kwaku's eyes widened.

Behind him, the old man whispered:

"The prophecy…"

Kwaku turned.

"What prophecy?"

But before the old man could answer—

A golden light suddenly exploded through the temple entrance.

Kwesi stood there.

His eyes locked onto Kwaku.

For several seconds, the brothers simply stared at each other.

Then Kwaku's crimson eyes narrowed.

"Kwesi…"

Kwesi stepped forward.

"Kwaku."

The creature behind Kwaku laughed.

Two bloodlines.

Its voice echoed through the temple.

One kingdom.

The ground began to tremble.

And only one will survive.

Kwaku looked at his brother.

Then at the creature.

For the first time, he realized something terrifying.

The war had already begun.

And neither brother knew which side they were fighting for.
