Serah's POV
The sound of dripping water kept me awake, as the cell was cold, so cold that my bones felt hollow, but I didn't care anymore. I had stopped counting the days since Jethro threw me down here.
I thought I had heard something once, like footsteps or maybe not, but I told myself it was only rats, until the faint light of a lantern broke through the dark.
"Who's there?" I whispered, clutching my swollen stomach. My voice came out hoarse, cracked like dry glass.
"It's me," a voice answered softly. "Maribel."
I squinted as she came closer, her face pale in the glow. "What are you doing here? You'll be killed if they find you."
"I couldn't sleep," she said, setting the lantern down. "Lydia, she's planning to kill me."
I froze. "What? I told you to run away!"
