Chapter 162 - [DEM] 162: The Triple Barrier

Kekkaishi is an anime centered on youkai.

In a place called Karasumori, an uncanny force draws youkai, granting those who approach immense power, causing rapid evolution and strength.

It's akin to the Shikon Jewel, but immovable, a fixed beacon of power.

Many youkai covet Karasumori.

To prevent their dominance, two families skilled in barrier techniques guard it: the Sumimura and Yukimura clans.

Masamori and Yoshimori Sumimura are brothers from the Sumimura clan.

Tokine Yukimura hails from the Yukimura clan.

Madarao and Hakubi, canine shikigami, serve the Sumimura and Yukimura clans, respectively.

These families are old rivals.

Both are disciples of Hazama Tokimori, the creator of barrier techniques, and have long clashed over who holds the "true" legacy—a conflict Hazama himself orchestrated.

Morpheus reserved judgment on Hazama but acknowledged his genius.

His barrier technique was extraordinary, using "space" to craft barriers that eliminate youkai.

Unlike typical barriers, which form energy shields, Hazama's technique manipulates space itself to create them.

The technique follows distinct steps.

First, Houi, designates the target.

Second, Teiso, forms boundary lines around the target area.

Third, Ketsu, erects the barrier, trapping the youkai inside. The user then assesses the youkai's nature to decide its fate.

Fourth, Kai, releases the barrier if the youkai is harmless.

If it's dangerous, the final step is Metsu.

Kai and Metsu are two sides of the same coin.

Kai dissolves the barrier; Metsu collapses it, destroying the internal space with devastating force.

Few youkai survive.

To prevent defeated youkai from regenerating, kekkaishi can open a dimensional gate with Tenketsu to banish fragments to another realm—a flawless cleanup.

Remarkably efficient.

The ultimate form of this technique is Zekkai, a pinnacle Hazama achieved. A chaotic, purple-black void, it obliterates anything it touches, offering unmatched defensive power.

Its counterpart, Shinkai, is a spell capable of creating new worlds, a technique bordering on divine.

Even Hazama admitted Shinkai was near godlike.

Curiously, Hazama didn't create Shinkai. It was developed by Yoshimori Sumimura, the Kekkaishi protagonist, a descendant of his disciple.

Yet, in Kekkaishi, the true powerhouse isn't Yoshimori or Hazama.

It's Yoshimori's mother, Sumiko Sumimura.

Her strength is overwhelming.

She's the undisputed top-tier, with feats like slaying and sealing gods, the strongest technique-user without peer.

Even Hazama praised her, declaring no one could match her when she emerged.

She surpassed him, a fact he acknowledged.

In Kekkaishi, Sumiko's presence is almost deus ex machina, her power breaking the mold.

She's like Jujutsu Kaisen's Satoru Gojo, but unlike Gojo, who boasts "I'm the strongest," Sumiko is indifferent to power.

Yet she wields the greatest.

A dark irony.

Morpheus digressed.

Watching the Team Umesen face the Team Nura, he was intrigued.

A battle between humans and youkai—who would prevail?

The current match pitted Masamori Sumimura against Kubinashi.

Masamori, Yoshimori's older brother and the Sumimura heir, was stronger but lacked his brother's potential.

Yoshimori hadn't yet turned potential into power, so Masamori outshone him.

Against Kubinashi's onslaught, Masamori fought methodically, conjuring barriers as shields to block attacks with ease.

Occasionally, he formed barriers to trap Kubinashi.

But Kubinashi was quick, escaping just before the barriers closed.

Their back-and-forth was riveting.

Morpheus saw Masamori wasn't fighting at full strength.

He was demonstrating, showcasing his barrier technique as a lesson.

The students? Yoshimori and Tokine.

The two watched hungrily, imagining themselves in Masamori's place, pondering their own choices.

Kubinashi noticed, feeling insulted yet wary.

"You…!"

Enraged, he glared at Masamori. "Stop toying with me! Fight me head-on!"

Masamori deemed the lesson complete.

"Watch closely, Yoshimori, Tokine. This is how you use barriers."

Raising two fingers, he called out, "Ketsu!"

Instantly, triple-layered barriers materialized around Kubinashi, imprisoning him.

Kubinashi didn't even react before becoming Masamori's captive.

One word—Metsu—and the collapsing barriers would unleash enough force to obliterate him.
