"Talking alone and suddenly deciding that the two of you are friends is shocking enough. But now you're telling me she's coming to stay with us? No. It doesn't make any sense."
His voice softened.
"Just tell me what's wrong. I'll protect you."
"I don't need your protection."
Olaedo removed his hand from her shoulder.
She hated the way that simple gesture made her feel.
As though she actually had someone to depend on.
She hated the gentle look in his eyes. The softness in his touch. The way he seemed to be silently telling her that she could lower her guard around him.
She didn't like it at all.
Because if she let herself lean on him, even for a moment, she might forget everything she had just decided.
"It's exactly as I told you," she said firmly. "And I'm sure I can make this decision concerning our contract agreement. I believe it will be in our best interest."
