The words were formal and official, written in the elaborate script used for royal decrees. But the meaning behind them was clear enough that my hands started trembling harder with each line.
"By Order of His Majesty, King Oswin Avaly, Sovereign of the Empire Of Avaly:
The Holy Church has seen fit to bring to Our attention a matter of grave concern. Their priests, in communion with the divine, have received visions regarding one Cadiz Eberhart, now of Ashforde through marriage.
The Church declares him an abomination.
They say his very presence corrupts the natural order, that magic itself recoils from him. He is a tear in reality that needs to be eliminated.
We have no reason to doubt the word of the Church. They have guided this empire since its founding, and their judgment in matters of the divine has never led Us astray.
House Ashforde will surrender Cadiz to Our custody within fifteen days.
