In the center of the chamber was a magical barrier, strong and complex, forming a large circle on the floor.
I could see the magic shimmering in the air, layers upon layers of spells woven together with a skill that must have taken years to create.
The barrier pulsed with energy, throwing off waves of power that I could feel even from where I stood, it was beautiful in a terrible way, intricate patterns of light weaving through each other in combinations I'd never seen before.
This wasn't simple magic, this was something far beyond what most practitioners could achieve. Whoever had created this barrier had devoted enormous time and resources to making it as strong and impenetrable as possible.
And inside that barrier was a pool.
It wasn't water, the liquid was too dark, too thick, glowing faintly with an unnatural light that seemed to pulse in rhythm with some unseen heartbeat.
