THE BEACH OF EVER AFTER

POV

As The feeling of water gently lapping at her back slowly roused as Neopolitan from her slumber now as just Not fully conscious yet and then the very little assassin kept as her eyes just scrunched closed as she just turned just an over on the warm sand. Her peaceful slippage back on the into the sweet oblivion of very sleep as it was all just now rudely as interrupted by an certain someone that she knows now As however by a sudden rush of seawater just flooding her nose and as down the back of her throat as the very assassins with Pink and Brown just her very eyes just snapped open immediately as she just was on Acting on her pure instinct now as Neo just sprang up onto her very hands and as her very knees and then as retching out the salty solution around her as before taking in great gasping gulps of air and then she was as now just now as she was Looking around her surrounding as she was pretty much as confused as she was just wondering as just where the hell is she right now She thought.

But Her life no longer in immediate peril as Neo's rational mind slowly made its way to the forefront as she just did surveyed as her very current location now The last thing she did remembered just now was that her very much partner in crime Cinder crushing her very fingers just against that magical staff as just sending both her and as that Ruby rose brat They both were plummeting down into the very infinite void below them and those very golden walkways now as Neo as just as looked just out across the yellow-tinted sea towards the very horizon, nothing but softly rolling waves before her now and as then as She just turned her very back to the sea and just gazed across the very sandy shore and as the lush forest of tropical trees beyond it.

But just now it was Oblivion as seemed to be more akin to a holiday destination than the inky-black nothingness that she had always pictured it as to be in the end and just as in to be Her existential pondering as seemed to dissipate it but she felt a sudden pull within her body now as It was forceful at first and as just more like a soft hand on her shoulder angling her body a particular way now and as just Whatever it was as it seemed to want her just to focus at her very vision as in the very past the very big trees and as upwards.

As then Neo's very eyes opened fully just to behold the very sight of the largest tree As she had ever in her whole life have seen as just now Bigger than a building. No, bigger than an entire block of buildings, stood this mighty tree now as The ethereal pull in her body seemed to grow somewhat stronger as she viewed this tree, urging her towards it for some reasons now as She wanted to go.

But the Something solid brushed up against her fingertips now and just breaking as the very tree's weird spell and just Neo looked down and just gave a soft, silent sob as her parasol Hush floated back as lightly on top of the very sea water by her now she just as started Snatching towards the parasol up as the very least as Neo tried her best to shake it free of water and was immensely grateful for that very all the workings of the delicate instrument still functioned properly and as it did had an hidden blade and all But as her elation at her very weapon's return quickly to her and gave way to a bolt of terror as she just did found herself just without him her true friend and family Roman Torchwick's And as what's remain of him his very Derby hat and the very Tears of grief rolled down her face again as she whipped her head left and her right now and desperately hoping as to find the apparel somewhere on the beach as then just "There ! "

A tiny speck of black spotted further down the beach sent As then Neo get up into action as she scrambling back up onto shaky legs. Throwing Hush to a safe distance away from the sea water now and then Neo

sprinted towards the hat, terrified of the water claiming it before she got there. She downright leapt at the headwear as it caught itself on small wave, sending up a small explosion of water and sand as she crashed down upon it. She knelt there in the shallow water, sobbing fat tears of relief as she clung tight the reminder of the only man she ever cared for.

A soft groan caught Neo's attention. Her head whipped up, and her eyes focused in on the body that lay further down the beach. Blue pants, white armour, blond hair. Neo's eyes narrowed to a glare. One of Ruby's friends.

Returning the waterlogged hat to its rightful place upon her head as then Neo just pulled herself back into her feet now and as strode towards the unconscious man Her footsteps nearly silent across the soft sand, Neo was able to stand right beside the prone man. He had washed up on the shore much like herself, but far up enough and on his back so that he was in no imminent danger of drowning. Neo's fists clenched tight at the sight of the man.

Another groan escaped from the Huntsman's lips, and his eyelids fluttered. Panic swept across Neo. He was going to wake up soon. She gave a silent curse that her only weapon was further down the beach where she had thrown it. Stupid move! Neo took a deep breath, feeling her aura ripple across her body, thankfully replenished since her last battle with Ruby and Cinder's betrayal. A single thrust of Hush's blade was her preferred killing style, but with no time left, all the little assassin could do was straddle the large man's chest and, after focusing her aura down into her hands, wrap them around his throat and press down on his windpipe with her thumbs.

Mercifully for Neo, there was no resistance from the blond man's own aura as she bore her full force down onto him. It was working, judging by the pained expression across his face and the short, squeaky breaths he was trying to take. Neo's redoubled her efforts, just a little bit more until...

The pink aura around her hands met with an opposing white around his neck.

Heterochromatic eyes of pink and brown met with dark blues.

Neo recoiled slightly, but as she made to move away, her right arm was locked in place by the Huntsman's left hand clamping down on across her wrist. Neo tried to break the grip with her other hand, only to have the tables turned on her as his right arm shot up and a hand easily twice the size of her own wrapped around her neck. Her own aura was now solely focused on keeping her neck from being crushed beneath the force he was pressing down with. Still straddled across his chest, Neo tried to pull herself backwards and free, but the Huntsman's grip was like iron shackles. She looked down into his eyes, finding them still somewhat glassy with dilated pupils. He was doing all this while still not fully conscious?!

The grip around her neck suddenly loosened and she took in a desperate gasp on air. Whatever relief she felt in that fleeting moment was soon extinguished as those glassy eyes suddenly focused, dilated pupils becoming pinpricks of hate as they bore across her terrified countenance.

"You," the man growled. "Cinder's friend."

Neo's Aura flared dangerously around her neck as his grip seemingly doubled. Forget choking to death, Neo was more concerned about him snapping her neck. The world spun on its axis as Neo was ripped off the fighter's armoured chest and slammed into the sandy floor. Dazed, Neo hung limply by the vice-like grip around her neck as the man shakily rose to his feet.

Neo's feet barely grazed the sand as he continued to hold her at arm's length one-handed. In a rush of adrenaline, Neo swung her legs up and coiled them around his arm, fighting desperately to try and get any sort of leverage against his hold. She managed to grind a heel into the side of his face, but his aura flashed and absorbed the damage with ease.

"You...you were trying to kill me!" He shouted at her, his voice a half-roar, half-squeak of disbelief. "Y-you and Cinder! You killed them all!" Tears were falling freely from his eyes now, and look of intense grief across his features. "Yang, Blake and Ruby, Weiss...Weiss and I...and then I..."

Neo gave a silent cry of pain as his left hand crushed down on her ankle, armored fingers piercing through her rapidly weakening aura and bearing down on her flesh. Tears of pain rolled down Neo's face, joining the man's tears of grief.

"She told me to! Said we couldn't let Cinder have the power. Said to...she told me to! I didn't want to! I didn't have a choice! Oh gods...Penny! Penny I'm-I'm so sorry!" Neo had no idea what the man was rambling about, but through all his inner turmoil, his grip never loosened.

It was a last ditch effort, but Neo drew on a tiny fraction of her Aura to activate her semblance. It wasn't enough for a full body illusion, only enough for her brown and pink hair to suddenly give way to platinum blonde.

"No." The man's eyes grew sharp once more and he shattered the facial illusion of Weiss Schnee with a pump of his hand.

She tried again, this time as Ruby Rose.

"Stop it!" He shouted, breaking the illusion once more.

Neo tried over and over again, cycling through Ruby's list of friends, but every time her illusion was blasted away.

"No more tricks." The look of absolute rage behind those dark blue eyes sent a shiver through Neo. "No escaping this time. You're nothing but a heartless killer. And..." He turned his gaze away from her as her Aura dissipated in a flash of pink particles.

"And so am I."

Neo struggled desperately for a few seconds, kicking at his face and thrashing madly, before her vision tunneled into a single pinprick of light and she felt herself sliding off his arm and going limp. She felt like she was floating, only to have gravity claim her once more as her back was slammed into. Purely out of survival instinct she took a deep gasp of air, the oxygen flooding her brain. Suddenly she found her vision exploding back into full view as she beheld the blue sky above her. She took another strained gasp of air, pushing with her arms against the sandy beach floor as she looked over at the young Huntsman a few meters away. His head was hung low, hunched over slightly with tightly clenched fists.

"Just get out of here," he said softly. Tears continued to stream down his face. "I don't ever want to see you again. If I do, I won't stop myself from killing you."

Neo continued to gasp for air as she willed her legs to support her. Roman's derby was thankfully not too far away as she scooped it up and held it close to her chest. She stood there for a few seconds, bow-legged, staring at the man.

"WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!?" He pitched his upper body forward as he screamed at her. "GO!"

The guttural bellow of the young Huntsman, so full of grief and pain and anger, sent Neo's flee instinct into overdrive as she scrambled to turn and get as far away from the man as possible. She sprinted down the beach as fast as her weak legs would take her until the man was well out of sight. She continued to take deep breaths of air, each gulp burned across her halfway crushed throat, her aura gone, no healing to help her.

In her current state of desperation, that unexplainable pull towards that giant tree returned, urging her on. Neo turned from the beach and started making her way through the trees. She continued to make her way further in, pushing past heavy tree trunks and dense foliage. But the more she made her way through the vegetation, the thicker it seemed to grow. The heavy vines and thick shrubs seemed to move around her as she tried to force her way through. A vine coiled around her ankle, sending her falling onto the leafy forest floor. She tried to crawl forward, but more and more vines impeded her progress. Neo pushed herself back onto her feet, exhausted and shaky as they were. She stood still for a moment, observing the eerily unmoving vegetation around her. She took an experimental step forward and was shocked to find the heavy vines react to her movement. But when Neo took a step backwards, the vines remained still. She took another step backwards, and then another and then another still, until the impacted forest floor gave way to soft warm sand. Panic flooded Neo's little body as she found herself back on the beach.

She turned away from the seemingly alive forest, quashing that strange desire to reach the giant tree, and ran back to where she had thrown her parasol. She was back to where she had woken up, her imprint in the shallows washed away by the tide. Collecting her weapon and holding it tight, Neo continued on down the beach. There had to be something, anything else! She walked, and walked and walked and walked, until she finally spotted something huddled up near a tree.

Blue pants, white armour, blond hair.

Fear coursed through Neo and her throat burned at remembrance. No, this couldn't be possible. She couldn't have walked this entire island already! She turned and fled; running, running, running until she arrived back again at the point of where she started. Totally exhausted, Neo gripped her parasol and derby hat tight to her chest as she leaned up against a large boulder and wept, wanting so desperately to make a sound when she screamed.

large torch set in the sand, just in time to see the blond man, Jaune Arc, be swallowed into the darkness as he walked away. A certain smell tickled Neo's nose and she leapt over to the other side of the boulder. She looked down to find three coconuts with their tops sheared off, as well as a fat bundle of leaves. The leaves were warm to the touch as she began to unwrap them and tears welled in her eyes as she revealed the contents. One of the fish she had dropped, its cooked flesh seemingly glowing white as steam escaped into the cool night air. Neo's stomach roared in anticipation and she tore into the fish, not caring the slightest if she burnt the tips of her fingers or the roof of her mouth as she swallowed as much of the life-restoring meal as quick as possible. She almost choked on a small bone before hastily retching it out. Neo grabbed one of the nearby coconuts, the water inside was cool and refreshing, and after completely draining one of its contents, she quickly grabbed the second, and then the third. Sighing contently, Neo returned to cleaning the fish of as much meat as possible, leaving only an assortment of bones in the leafy wrappings. Scooping up the remaining coconuts and the torch, Neo set the fire down across the bundle of sticks she had previously collected, letting her own campfire roar to life. With Hush in hand, Neo reclined against her boulder before using her parasol's blade to scrape out some of the sweet meat contained within the hairy shells.

Her stomach fit to burst while her body warmed up against the flickering glow of the campfire, Neo's eyelids began to droop as she could no longer keep herself awake.

Out of view from the young Huntsman, Neo gave a silent sigh of relief and smiled brightly as she padded after him, skipping over the words 'TRUCE?' scrawled in the beach below.

"Take a seat I guess," Jaune said as he gestured to the log he was previously dragging. He made his way towards the line of trees. "I was just making myself busy while I was waiting for breakfast to cook anyway. Just wait a while longer, they should be almost ready."

Neo looked at the open campfire as she sat down on the log. What was he talking about? There was nothing cooking over it. She turned instead to watch the young Huntsman as he clambered halfway up a nearby palm tree and swung his sword about trying to reach a nearby cluster of coconuts. Neo rolled her eyes as he flailed about for a few moments before the tip of his sword finally reached high enough to clip the connecting strands and send the entire bushel plummeting down to the earth below. Despite his goofy actions, the fact that he could swing that heavy blade one-handed was no joke. This Huntsman was immensely strong. But she already knew that of course, as Neo's hand absentmindedly rubbed the still slightly red marks around her throat.

"Are you thirsty?" Jaune asked as he dragged the bushel of coconuts back to the campfire.

Neo hadn't thought about it much since awakening, but she looked at him wide-eyed and nodded enthusiastically.

The young Huntsman gave a small laugh. He twisted the closest coconut off the bushel and set it down between two stones, wedging it in place. "Figured as much, still haven't managed to find any sources of water around here. Plenty of coconuts though." With sword in hand, he swung down at the fruit. The golden edge of the blade shearing easily though the sinewy strands of the outer layers and all the way through, leaving a neat little cut at the top just deep enough to allow access to the center. Brushing the sand from it, Jaune presented the fruit to Neo.

"Here," he said, arm outstretched. "No little umbrella unfortunately, you'll have to make do."

Neo was a little hesitant at first, her hands slowly rising to reach for the coconut. She made a sudden, sharp grab for it, snatching it away. The Huntsman reacted by looking shocked for a second and taking a half-jump back. The air between the two was thick with tension and mistrust. Mercifully for Neo, he quickly turned away with a curt grunt and returned to slicing open a few more coconuts. He set them down by the log, though didn't offer her another after she had drained her own.

Neo could only sit there and watch as Jaune stabbed his sword back down into the sand near his armour and instead grabbed his two pieces of shoulder armour. She watched him curiously as he knelt down a short space from the campfire and began using one a little makeshift shovel, scooping the sand away.

"Should be just about ready," Neo heard him say to himself.

Her eyes widened at the sight of the little green package he had excavated from the hole. He peeled back a few sections of leaves at the top and a small cloud of steam erupted forth. More leaves were inside, slick with steamy moisture, as he set the package down and continued to peel more and more layers back, until finally the contents inside were revealed. Six long bananas, still in their natural casings, were scooped with his other shoulder armour piece. Brushing the first shoulder guard clean of sand, Jaune rolled three of the bananas onto the makeshift plate and set it down by his side.

"Careful, they're still pretty hot," Jaune said as he slowly approached Neo and set the shoulder guard down on the log beside her before returning to the remaining three set on the other side of the campfire.

Neo surmised he must still be a little spooked when she snatched the coconut from his hands. She gave a small huff as she couldn't really blame him. She brought the makeshift plate closer, not touching the food just yet, but instead watching as the blond Huntsman carefully and delicately peeled away the soft and steamy casing to reveal the golden yellow fruit inside. He tore off a chunk of the stringy looking fruit, bouncing it in his free hand and blowing on it before shoving it into his mouth. Sweat beaded on his forehead as he continued draw air into his mouth in short sharp little gasps, the fruit clearly still too hot for him as he tried to chew. Neo couldn't help but smile as he scrambled for one of the previously opened coconuts and gulped down the water within.

"Okay, maybe give them a few more minutes to cool down," he sighed to himself. He turned slightly, locking eyes with her, and mimicked her smile. "So...your name's Neopolitan, right?"

Her smile faded and her eyes widened in shock. Her thoughts flashed back to their previous fight in Atlas, of course he knew her name, that hammer girl had said it back then. Gaining control over facial features once, Neo smiled a little and nodded.

"The name's Jaune Arc," Jaune offered he closed his eyes and spoke the introduction with relaxed familiarity. "Short, sweet, rolls off the tongue and...well it...I guess Jaune will just do." He looked away, a deep blush forming across his cheeks.

The two looked at each other for a few moments more, Jaune clearly expecting Neo to say something in reply.

"Okay...so..." he said, more in an attempt to fill the silence. His countenance suddenly grew serious. "Look, I understand the whole 'Silent Assassin' style you've got going on here, and don't get me wrong, it's very intimidating in a fight, believe me." He took a deep breath. "But if you want us to be working together, you're going to have to put in at least a little effort into talking to me, I can't get by with nods and gestures alone."

Neo's eyes rolled up and she gave an exhaustive sigh, finding herself in the ever-so-familiar predicament of trying to explain her muteness. The best way she could get the point across was pointing to her open mouth and crossing her arms into an 'X'. Judging by his angry expression quickly morphing into a look a shock, the message got across perfectly well.

"You...you mean you can't..." Jaune continued to look at her with a dumbfounded expression before arcing back and slamming the palms of his hands into his eyes. "Argh! You're such an idiot, Jaune Arc!"

Neo actually found it a little adorable as he flailed about in embarrassment, a little smile spreading across her countenance. It quickly fell though as the young Huntsman suddenly made a gesture of clawing at his face in little circles, then tapping at his nose with the back of his right hand. Neo leapt up from the seat, startling him as she slid down into a kneeling position before him and looking at him expectant eyes.

"Can you understand me?" She signed to him, her hand shaking throughout the motions.

The recognition flashing in his eyes told Neo all she needed to know as tears welled up in her own. He was about to answer when she reached out and held his right hand in both of hers as she leant down and let the tears in soft, silent sobs. It had been over a year since she had spoken sign language with someone, anyone! The last and only person in her life that had bothered to learn for her sake had been Roman.

Jaune was accommodating enough to let her express her emotions freely without interruption. It only took her a few more minutes before she had calmed down a little and was able to wipe the last few tears from her eyes and continue their conversation.

"Why did you learn?" Neo asked him. She watched as he worked his mouth silently repeating her question. He was clearly out of practice.

"Sister. Sister born bad hearing. Learn together. Family. Family learn together. Sorry. Need better. Long time not talk."

His signing was very clumsy and made little sense but Neo was able to understand what Jaune was trying to tell her.

"Good brother. Caring," She signed back, going slowly for his sake. "Caring family."

He smiled at her reply, sniffling a little. "Yes. Caring family. Talk more. Promise. Food now. Talk after food."

Neo nodded in agreement as she got up and returned to the log and her breakfast. The almost mushy soft casings were warm to the touch as she peeled back the green skins and tore of a stringy chunk of the yellow flesh inside. She popped the chunk in her mouth and chewed. She turned back to Jaune who was chewing a mouthful of the yellow fruit himself. She held up an index finger and pretended to peel around it. "Banana?"

Jaune shook his head. "Not Banana." He paused, looking down at his hands, trying a few gestures before looking back up at her and speaking. "Sorry, I don't know if there's a word for plantain. It's like a banana but not the same."

Neo shook her head and spelled the word out with one hand. "You can speak while you sign. It will help."

"Thanks," he replied, returning to his breakfast. They ate in silence until all the soft flesh of the plantains were gone and Neo passed her now empty shoulder armour plate back to Jaune. He took both pieces down to the ocean to wash them clean and returned back to the beach to let them dry. He and Neo then shared the remaining open coconuts together.

"Are we dead?" Neo suddenly asked.

Jaune seemed a little shocked at the question. "No, I don't think we are. I thought we were at the start, but then I started getting hungry and really needed to use the bathroom." He blushed as the words left his mouth, earning a smile from Neo. "Besides, turns out magic exists! Who knew, right? Might have just been transported to some weird magic dimension or something."

"This whole island is weird," Neo signed. "The sun goes up and down in the same direction."

"Yeah, I noticed that too," Jaune replied, signing along as he spoke. "Plus no matter how much I walked, I kept finding myself back in the same small area, too small to be the entire perimeter of this island."

Neo perked up at that. "I noticed that too. When I was running from-" she paused mid-signing.

"Yeah, let's just put a pin in that, alright?" A shadow fell over Jaune's features. She could tell he didn't want to look at her, but he needed to so that they could continue talking. He jutted his head towards the giant tree at the center of the island. "And then there's that thing. Do you feel it to?"

Neo suddenly felt that unexplainable pull towards the giant tree inside her again. "Yes. I tried making my way towards it yesterday but-"

"But the closer you got, the more the forest tried to stop you?"

Neo nodded.

A deep sigh released from Jaune's lips. "Same. I can only make it about ten, maybe fifteen meters in. There must be something we're missing." He suddenly stood up. "I can't explain it, but it feels like that tree is like a meeting point, that it's telling me that it's my destiny to reach it."

Neo almost fell as she was caught off-guard by Jaune's primal scream at the forest as he hurled an empty coconut shell towards it. "JUST LET ME THROUGH!" His bare chest was pounding up and down as he stood there in impotent rage. He fell back down on his behind and brought his legs up, folding his arms over his head as he buried it between his knees.

"I'm sorry," he said, his voice somewhat muffled. "I'm...I'm not having the best time dealing with things at the moment." He stood up, wiping the tears from his face. "I'm gonna...I'm gonna go for a bit of a run. I need to clear my head a little, yeah. Help yourself to the coconuts if you need to...to...well anyway." He suddenly turned and ran off, leaving a very confused Neo sitting alone by the fire.

The two ate comfortably in each others company for thirty minutes, then Jaune went and turned in the dishes to wash later on and cleaned himself. He stood up before Pyrrha and took her hands, she giggled happily as she was led up by the hands and taken up the stairs into their bedroom for the main event of their evening.

Jaune washed his clothes in the nearby river, trying to scrub out dirt patches earned in his exploration out of his hoody. The dirt was long gone, but he persisted, attempting to ignore the spectre haunting his mind "SALUTATIONS!" Penny, now phantom after her mortal flesh perished, attempted again, trying to get Jaune's proper attention. Even with her persistent optimism, she was starting to get irritated. 5 minutes of bothering him, since she found herself haunting her friend in this strange realm. "Jaune, please talk to me. I am just as confused as you. If anything, I expected to be haunting dear sister Winter. This is as much a surprise to me as it is to you." Penny gestured to her spectral body, her form from before the death of her flesh, with the image of a broken sword length lodged in her sternum Jaune relented and turned to the spirit. "I Am Sorry.", he said quickly, hanging his hoodie up to dry.

Penny floated forward to look Jaune in the eyes. "You have Nothing to apologize for. I was Lung Shot and on death's door. Cinder already killed me. You just gave me the chance to give the powers to Winter."

Jaune was about to break down crying, but Penny then gestured to Jaune's camp. "If you must cry, my friend, do it with some food."

Jaune nodded and moved back to his makeshift camp. The warm weather allowed the basic leaf bed to serve, and the edible plant life was easy to make something nutritious Jaune chowed down while working through his emotional relief.

...

Penny observed the eating, feeling comfort her friend was safe, but also an envy. "You want to eat too, don't you." Said Jaune, finishing off the number of berries and beans he set aside for the day's rations. He would gather more tomorrow, he thought.

"Well, we did go through all that effort to get me that new body...." Penny said, wistfully.

Jaune reached inside himself, channeling his semblance into his hand, and touched it to the ghostly Penny, much to her surprise, she felt what he felt. The flavour, the comfort, of food. Penny cried a ghostly tear and nodded. "Thank you." Jaune nodded back. "If you are stuck with me as a ghost, we could find a way to get you back a physical form, in this realm of magic."

Penny smiled at the thought. "Perhaps a nice clockwork body, or a plant-based one. I would prefer not those marionettes of the Red King." Jaune smiled, getting ready for sleep. "True....Nearby, a mouse overheard Jaune, but not the conversation of the Ghost."Tell me, Tall Person. Who are you talking too?" asked the Mouse. Jaune already tired, heard not the question as he drifted off to sleep, the ghostly Penny joining him in his dreams.
