Chapter 300 - 300 - Roshi's Grand Plans!!

The tea in Mei's cup had long since gone cold.

Her green eyes, which usually held a hint of amusement, now seemed distant and unfocused.

It was beyond her.

Utterly, completely beyond anything she had ever imagined or planned for.

Her grand design for opening the Hidden Mist—turning the village into a maritime hub that linked international trade routes, letting shinobi carve out a new way of life by escorting merchant ships and guarding sea lanes—

Plans she'd once thought bold and forward-thinking enough to make her secretly proud during late-night reflection… now felt almost conservative.

The Future Mizukage stared at the young yet unnervingly calm face across from her, searching those deep black eyes for even the slightest trace of a joke, an exaggeration—anything. She found nothing.

He was serious. So serious that it sent a faint chill through her, a shiver made of equal parts yearning and unease.

"Roshi-kun…" Her voice came out drier than she expected. She cleared her throat, regaining her usual composure before asking, carefully, "This 'unified system' you're talking about… what exactly would it look like?"

"Would it… erase the names and symbols of each village?"

She was honestly trying to grasp what he meant.

Roshi didn't answer right away. Instead, he stood, took Mei's cup, and poured the cooled tea into the waste bowl at the side. Then he refilled it with freshly boiled water.

That simple movement snapped the frozen thread of her thoughts, letting Mei pull herself back together.

"What does it look like?" Roshi set down the teapot and sat back down. "Maybe it won't be as unrecognizable as you think."

"Shinobi training in the mountains will still be able to straighten their backs and proudly say they're from Kumogakure, wearing Kumogakure forehead protectors and using Kumogakure swordsmanship."

"Shinobi rooted in those rust-red rock walls won't have to shy away from calling themselves Iwagakure ninjas just because they're part of a larger whole. The resilient, unyielding Will of Stone will still be their spiritual core."

"Shinobi tempered by sandstorms and scorching sun will still control puppets with precision and devote themselves to poisons and mechanisms."

"And the shinobi of the Hidden Mist will always be the shinobi of the Hidden Mist."

"Past glories, unique traditions, fighting styles shaped by land and climate… these precious parts of identity won't vanish because of unification. If anything, through exchange and collision, they might shine even more brightly."

Mei listened in silence, letting that calm, gentle voice sketch out a future before her eyes.

"The only thing that must—and will—change," Roshi continued, "is that when shinobi wearing different forehead protectors stand shoulder to shoulder on a battlefield or tackle some enormous undertaking together, the different symbols on their foreheads will no longer instantly turn into suspicion."

"We'll face disasters together—whether it's some organization that suddenly amasses terrifying power or a threat that lies beyond anything we can currently comprehend."

"We'll figure out the way forward together. As these years of peace slowly stretch on and the old mission-commission system quietly changes with the times, we'll discover how shinobi should redefine their value—how they can find new paths that let them make a living while still contributing to the world."

"Ultimately, we'll build the future together." His voice never rose, staying steady and unhurried. "A world where… children can grow up peacefully in the sunlight, without being taught hatred and killing from the moment they can walk."

"The power of Ninjutsu isn't just for destruction or defense. It can be used to clear wilderness, build bridges over ravines, cure diseases, and explore the mysteries of the earth beneath our feet and the starry sky above."

She stayed silent, letting herself sink into the alluring vision Roshi painted.

That was the happiness she longed for—a bright, hopeful future after casting off her heavy burdens and escaping the curse of the Bloody Mist.

'I really want to see that kind of world with my own eyes.'

The thought rose up naturally and with startling force.

But just as that yearning threatened to sweep away her reason, another weight—the weight of responsibility—dragged her back.

Her shoulders bore the future of the village. No matter how beautiful the blueprint he offered, for now it was still only a blueprint.

Entrusting the Village's fate to an idea that hadn't yet taken shape, led by a powerhouse from another Village—could that truly be called a responsible decision?

Mei's lips moved slightly, as if she were about to speak. Maybe she would ask a cautious question, maybe lay down a condition, or even… blurt out something reckless, casting aside all her worries: "If that's the future you've described, I'm willing to go see it with you."

But in the end, everything churning in her chest condensed into a deeper silence the moment it reached the tip of her tongue.

Just then, Roshi lifted his hand and tapped his knuckles twice against the tabletop.

The clear sound shattered the stillness.

The shoji door slid open a crack without a sound, and the respectful figure of a waiter appeared outside.

"You can bring the food now," Roshi said, his tone already back to its usual indifference.

"Yes." The waiter bowed and withdrew quickly.

Jolted from her thoughts, Mei blinked, then noticed the familiar, faintly reassuring, calm smile settle back onto Roshi's face.

He didn't press her, didn't try to convince her. It was as if the words that could shake someone's heart had been nothing more than idle talk over tea.

He let the topic drop and instead began chatting about some recent incidents in Konoha—like how a blond-haired kid in the village who, despite still being a brat, had created a very interesting Ninjutsu.

The absurdity of it all almost made one wonder if Konoha's age-rating regulations had special loopholes for certain publications. After that, he casually asked whether the Hidden Mist exchange students' journey had gone smoothly and what their first impressions of the Venue District were.

Their conversation drifted into lighter, trivial topics, carrying on until moonlight spilled across the courtyard and the banquet finally came to an end.

Roshi escorted her back to the Hidden Mist residence in Konoha. Even at night, the Venue District blazed with light. Laughter and voices from tourists from all over drifted faintly through the air—a different kind of bustle than in the daytime.

At the entrance to the residence, Mei turned, ready to say goodbye.

"Mei," Roshi spoke first.

She lifted her gaze to him.

Under the moonlight, his outline was sharper than it had been indoors: black hair, composed features, and that ever-calm expression.

"There's no need to make any decisions in a hurry, and you shouldn't feel pressured by this."

His eyes shifted past her shoulder to the brilliantly lit Venue District in the distance, which had already become another bustling center outside Konoha Village.

"The road is not paved by just one person, and there will never be only one road."

"It will gradually become clear in the process of us—all those who recognize the need for change and are willing to step forward—moving together, constantly testing things, failing, and, inevitably, facing setbacks and corrections."

He drew his gaze back to her; under the moonlight, his black eyes looked especially clear.

"And the future you've envisioned for the Hidden Mist, the efforts you're making now to integrate it into a wider world…"

"…do not conflict with the direction I just described."

"Just like streams that rise from different mountain ranges—maybe their routes differ and the obstacles they meet are not the same, but in the end…"

"They will meet and flow together."

He spoke with a quiet conviction that made her heart flutter.
