Chapter 8 - Meeting the tycoon

The smile on Mia's face was beginning to hurt as she made her way through the hall to Liam.

Not that anyone could tell.

Years of practice had perfected the expression. Soft enough to appear pleasant. Warm enough to seem genuine. Empty enough to survive.

Liam's fingers dug painfully into her arm immediately he saw her as he guided her through the glittering ballroom.

The grand hall shimmered beneath crystal chandeliers. Diamonds sparkled. Silk gowns flowed across polished marble floors. Every laugh carried the scent of power and money.

Yet Liam held her as though she were an expensive accessory rather than his fiancée.

"Smile," he muttered through clenched teeth.

Mia smiled.

The pressure on her arm increased.

"I said smile."

Her lips curved a fraction wider.

Satisfied, Liam finally loosened his grip.

"There he is."

Mia followed his gaze.

The crowd seemed to part naturally around one man.

Even at sixty, Mr. Alejandro Ortega commanded attention without raising his voice. Wealth did not merely surround him. It obeyed him.

People watched him.

Feared him.

Admired him.

And most importantly, wanted something from him.

Liam straightened his jacket.

"Remember," he whispered. "Don't embarrass me."

Mia almost laughed.

The irony was breathtaking.

As they approached, Ortega glanced toward them.

"Mr. Ortega." Liam extended his hand eagerly. "It's an honor."

Ortega shook it briefly.

Then his eyes settled on Mia.

For a moment, genuine curiosity flickered across his face.

"And who is this?"

"My fiancée, Mia."

Mia inclined her head gracefully.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Ortega."

His brows lifted slightly.

The response had been neither timid nor overly familiar.

Interesting.

"The pleasure is mine."

Liam immediately launched into a speech about his company, future investments, market opportunities, and every accomplishment he believed made him impressive.

Ortega listened for approximately ten seconds.

Then he turned to Mia.

"Tell me, Miss Mia."

Liam stopped speaking.

"What do you believe is the true value of money?"

Several nearby guests subtly leaned closer.

It was an unusual question.

Mia considered her answer.

"Money itself has very little value."

Ortega's eyes sharpened.

"Oh?"

"It only gains value because people agree it does. What money truly buys is freedom. Security. Time. Opportunity."

She paused.

"But if acquiring it costs your integrity, relationships, or peace of mind, then you've paid far more than it was worth."

Silence followed.

A thoughtful silence.

The kind that powerful people rarely encountered.

Ortega smiled.

"A refreshing answer."

Liam cleared his throat.

"Well, obviously money is important because—"

"Indeed."

Ortega interrupted him without even looking his way.

His attention remained fixed on Mia.

"Then allow me another question. What is more difficult to maintain? Wealth or relationships?"

Mia answered almost immediately.

"Relationships."

A few guests exchanged surprised looks.

"Why?"

"Because wealth only requires management."

Her voice remained calm.

"Relationships require honesty. Effort. Trust."

She glanced around the ballroom.

"Money attracts people. Honest relationships reveal who stays when the money is gone."

The older man stared at her for several seconds.

Then he laughed.

A genuine laugh.

The first of the evening, judging by the shocked expressions surrounding them.

"Remarkable."

Liam forced a chuckle.

"Yes, she's surprisingly clever."

The smile on Ortega's face vanished.

For the first time, he looked directly at Liam.

The look lasted less than a second.

Yet somehow it felt like an evaluation.

One Liam had failed.

Immediately.

Ortega returned his attention to Mia.

"I have a son."

Mia blinked.

"Congratulations?"

The old man barked another laugh.

Nearby guests looked horrified that anyone would respond to him that way.

Ortega looked delighted.

"Unfortunately, he left this party earlier."

"I see."

"I think the two of you would enjoy a conversation."

Mia's stomach tightened.

She sensed where this was heading.

"I would be honored to meet him."

"Excellent."

Ortega pulled a card from his pocket.

"Dinner tomorrow evening at my residence."

Liam practically lunged forward.

"Of course! We'd be delighted."

Mia resisted the urge to roll her eyes.

The invitation had clearly been directed at her.

Not them.

But declining wasn't an option.

So she accepted the card with a polite smile.

"Thank you, Mr. Ortega."

His gaze softened.

"No. Thank you for reminding me that intelligence still exists in this city."

Then, with a final nod, he disappeared into the crowd.

The moment he was gone, Liam's face lit up with greed.

"Do you understand what this means?"

Mia already knew.

Money.

Connections.

Status.

Opportunity.

Not once had he considered that Ortega had invited her because he found her interesting.

Before she could respond, a woman in a silver dress called Liam's name.

His eyes immediately wandered.

Predictable.

"I have some people to talk to."

Translation: women.

Mia simply nodded.

Liam didn't even pretend otherwise.

Within minutes he had vanished into the crowd, laughing beside a group of beautiful women.

Not a single glance backward.

"Would you like to leave, Miss Mia?"

She turned.

Shawn stood nearby.

Ever watchful.

Ever silent.

Unlike Liam, the bodyguard never looked at her as though she were an inconvenience.

"Please."

The exhaustion in her voice surprised even herself.

Shawn nodded.

"I'll take you home."

The drive back to the luxury condo was quiet.

Comfortably quiet.

For once, nobody demanded anything from her.

Nobody criticized her.

Nobody judged her.

By the time the elevator reached her floor, she felt slightly less suffocated.

"Thank you, Shawn."

"Of course, Miss Mia."

She stepped inside her apartment.

Locked the door.

Removed her heels.

And finally allowed herself to breathe.

Then the memory returned.

Grey eyes.

Cold.

Unsettling.

Hidden behind a black mask.

A stranger.

A complete stranger.

Yet somehow his voice still echoed in her head.

You are mine.

Mia scoffed.

"Absolutely not."

The audacity.

As though she were some object to be claimed.

As though she belonged to anyone.

The last thing she needed was another arrogant, self-absorbed man deciding what to do with her life.

One Liam was already too many.

Shaking her head, she disappeared deeper into the apartment.

Miles away, Shawn stood alone in a deserted parking structure.

The pleasant bodyguard expression was gone.

His face had become unreadable.

He pulled out his phone.

The call connected after a single ring.

"She's home."

A man's voice answered from the other end.

Deep.

Calm.

Dangerous.

"Any problems?"

"No."

Shawn glanced toward the night skyline.

"She arrived safely."

A brief silence followed.

"Good."

"I'll meet you soon."

The line disconnected.

Shawn stared at the dark screen for a moment before slipping the phone back into his pocket.

Far above the city, hidden behind clouds, a storm was beginning to gather.

And Mia had no idea she was standing directly in its path.
