Chapter 1 - Tragedy

Author's Note: Enjoy!

---------------------------

Hera Sable had been through a lot in her life. She was a Huntress from Beacon Academy and graduated amongst the top dogs of her class like Team STRQ. She was especially close with one of STRQ's members, Qrow Branwen. Sure, he wasn't a social type of person, but she didn't mind. During their Beacon Academy days, she was close with team STRQ, and she was closer with Qrow. The two spent a lot of time together growing closer and closer together. Even after they graduated from Beacon, Hera remained in contact with Qrow. But as time progressed, they would see each other less and less. Hera knew why though, it's because of a certain someone, a certain queen. One night though, her and Qrow drank a little too much and it resulted in something that would change her life. Hera soon had a son. At first, she panicked but soon she accepted and didn't resent the incident. However, she never told Qrow as she knew he wouldn't be able to handle having a son and being Ozpin's intel guy. So, she kept their son a secret for a long time. She named her son, Zenon, and he was her pride and joy.

She never treated him as a mistake, she showed him unconditional love, and she even trained him to one day become a Huntsman. Hera loved her son, and she was sure that once she told Qrow, he would love Zenon too. Zenon was a natural when it came to training. He currently has his Aura unlocked but not his semblance and Hera knew it would take a while. Zenon has yet to build a weapon because, well, he's too young to have one right now. Being only ten years old, she didn't think it was legal or wise to let him forge his own weapon. But she looked forward to seeing him forge his own weapon. Hera though had other things to focus on. She decided to finally tell Qrow about Zenon so she sent him a message asking him to meet her at her house so she could tell him something important. She wanted to tell him in person who Zenon was.

So, there she was, standing outside of her home with her ten-year-old son, Zenon waiting beside her. She was honestly nervous, she hoped that Qrow doesn't freak out or get mad at her for this. She could only theorize on how Qrow would react for now, but she was ready to tell him.

"Mom, who's coming?" Zenon asked.

"Someone important." Hera said. "Someone that should've met you years ago."

Zenon was confused but let it go. He knew to trust his mother. But hearing that it was someone that should've met him years ago has him excited. Zenon hopes that it's his father. He was always told that he had a father but for reasons he couldn't be around. Seeing the excitement on his face, Hera smiled before her senses spiked and her smile swiftly vanished to one of alert.

"Zenon."

"Yeah mom?" Zenon asked.

"Get inside and don't come out until either me or someone named Qrow arrives." Hera said.

"Mom?" Zenon asked once more, getting scared by her tone of voice.

"Do what I say, Zenon. Please." Hera said.

He hesitates before he rushes back inside the house and shuts the door. Once inside he looked for somewhere to hide. Meanwhile Hera searched the area around her before a large number of Grimm and a person in a cloak emerges from the forest. She knew what this meant but she didn't have her weapon on her. Though she wasn't out of options. She brings both fists up and takes a stance as blue lightning crackles around her.

"You want me?" Hera asks. "Come and get me."

The cloaked man stands there for a few seconds before he charges at Hera with the Grimm charging in as well.

[Minutes later]

Qrow Branwen was walking down a path towards Hera's house as he held his scroll in hand. He had tried calling Hera, but she didn't respond to his calls, making him worried and confused. He wondered if she was busy or in danger. When he got her message saying she had something important to tell him he didn't hesitate to drop what he was doing to go see her. It has been a while since he's seen her, and he feels bad about it. While he didn't want to admit it around Tai, he did have a crush on Hera. He has had one for a while now but thanks to his work and his semblance, he's held off on confessing to her. He puts his scroll away before he hears a loud boom. He looked forward and saw fading lightning in the distance in the direction of Hera's home. Knowing this, he was convinced she was in danger.

"Shit, Hera!" Qrow cursed in worry before entering a sprint while he grabbed his sword and extended the blade.

As he ran and ran, he got closer, but when he arrived, he saw scorch marks on the ground and soon saw Hera lying on the ground with blood on her. His eyes widen as his heart skips a beat.

"HERA!" Qrow cried out as he then rushed over to her.

"Qrow…" Hera said weakly.

He reached her and dropped his weapon before dropping to his knees and looking at her wound. It was a stab wound and a few others all across her body.

"Hera, what happened?" Qrow asked in a panic.

"It… it was a Queen's pawn." Hera revealed before she winced in pain.

Qrow was surprised to hear this but pushed it back into his mind, he needed to focus on Hera. He needed to save her.

"Don't worry, I can get you to the nearest hospital in no time." Qrow said.

"It's…. You won't make it in time." Hera said.

"Yes, I will!" Qrow said, determined to not let her die.

"Qrow, please just listen to me." Hera said. "In my home is what was so important."

Qrow looked at the house with curiosity at what she meant before looking back down at her.

"What do you mean?" Qrow asked.

"You…. Have a son, Qrow." Hera said.

This surprised him beyond belief.

"What? How?" Qrow asked.

"Not, important right now." Hera said. "Please, promise me. Promise me you'll take care of him. Take care of our son. Please."

Qrow heard it in her voice. She was serious. He really did have a son, yet he was still in disbelief.

"His name… is Zenon. Zenon Sable." Hera said. "When you go inside, give him your name."

"I…" Qrow hesitated.

"Please, Qrow." Hera said a pleading look in her eyes as she weakly held up her right hand. "You're all he has left, be there for him."

He hesitates more before he gently grabs her hand.

"I'll…." Qrow said but the words got caught in his throat.

Hera's pleading look slowly faded before she stopped breathing.

"Hera?" Qrow asked, tears forming in his eyes. "Hera!?"

Her hand slips out of his and hits the ground. He failed. He failed to once again save someone he cherished. First Summer now Hera. He looked towards the house before he looked back at Hera. He closes her still open eyes before standing up while grabbing his weapon and walking to the front door. As he opens it, he puts his sword away and steps inside. The house was quiet, but he had to find Zenon.

"Zenon? Hello? I'm Qrow Branwen." Qrow asked and introduced.

After a few seconds of silence, Zenon's smaller form emerged from his hiding place. He looked at Qrow with worry and fear.

"Are… you friends with my mom?" Zenon asked.

"You… could say that." Qrow said, unsure what to do or say.

Looking at this kid, he could see the resemblance between himself and the kid. For one, he has Qrow's hair but Hera's blue eyes.

"Where's… where's my mom?" Zenon asked.

Qrow didn't know what to say. How do you tell a child their mother is gone?
