Chapter 64 - The Capital

Pov: Eirian

"Get ready." A soldier told us, as he walked in, to throw clothes at us to put on.

After a long night of what seemed to be partying all night, and us trying to sleep, we were getting up. The constant chattering and laughing would make it hard for anyone to sleep.

Rubbing my eyes, I got up, and so did the others. "How early is it?" Eira let out.

"Early," Ael replied.

"Stop talking and get ready," the soldier said once more, but in a more aggressive tone, standing outside the tent.

"We are." Ael let out.

After a few minutes of getting read, we were dragged out of the tent. The clothes they gave us consisted of a plain white shirt and basic pants. My best guess is that they took it from the wardrobe of a fallen soldier. The mismatch in sizes suggested so.

Although we now had nicer clothes than before, people still stared at us as we were dragged out of the tent. They all wore the standard military uniforms. As my eyes looked around, many were packing, but others weren't.

"Are some staying?" I let out as I stopped staring.

"Continue walking," a soldier pushed me from behind.

As we arrived at the truck, a soldier opened the back door, and Ieuan seemed to be waiting for us. Seats ran parallel to each wall, and on the right side, Ieuan sat.

"About time." He let out. A bottle of liquor was in his right hand as his sword lay on the seat. Moving it, we made our way onto the truck.

Getting up on the truck, we all sat across from him. As the soldier closed the door behind us, you could hear someone banging against the truck as a signal to go.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"To the capital." He replied.

"What he meant was where in the capital." Ael continued as we all stared at him.

"Don't worry about it right now." He looked off to the side. "Just sit there and be silent for now."

"Can you at least answer my questions?" Amiel asked. Leuan's eyes still stared outside the window of the back door as the camp became smaller and smaller. "Do you know what happened to my family? The Aalto"

Leuan turned his head back at him, "So that's your family lineage? The blue hair suggested so." He sighed, leaning his chin on his hand. "You're asking if they are still alive, correct?"

Amiel nodded, hesitant in waiting for an answer.

"They are..." Amiel sighed in relief. "Although seventy years have passed, your family is being run by your brother. And by now I think you can guess that your parents are dead."

Amiel doesn't say anything; he already knew from yesterday's events. Everyone we knew before was either dead or close to being so. In the age of war, many people don't live for long, not unless you are an important noble, that is.

"Don't worry, they died a peaceful death, or so I've been told." He looked at Amiel, who was now looking at the floor, taking it all in. "Was that the only question you had?"

Amiel lingered for a moment before answering, "Yes..."

"Well then, for the rest of the ride, let's just sit in silence."

Turning to stare outside the window, that is exactly what we did.

A few hours passed, and we arrived at the capital. The huge wall of metal surrounded the capital, with soldiers stationed outside the gates. We could hear mummering outside as Ieuan seemed to get agitated about how long it was taking us to get in. Getting annoyed, he exited the vehicle, and I could hear him.

"What is taking so long? Let us in."

Hearing the soldier's voice become quiet at the sight of him, they quickly replied, "Right of course, sir."

"How important does he have to be to be treated like this?" Eira let out.

"Pretty important. If I had to guess, he had to be some type of general or sort."

We all turned, "You think?" Eira.

"Just look at his uniform, have you seen anyone else like his?" I added on.

Before anyone could say anything else, Ieuan climbed back into the truck. "How annoying all these people are." He let out.

As the truck started up, heading into town, I started to see how truly different it was to live inside the walls. I only had a small window to peer through, but through it I could see tall brick buildings, people walking and smiling, different cars on the roads, and the fact that we even had roads to begin with.

Everything in the wastelands was made of flimsy material and leftovers from the Empire. If you walked in the wastelands, you couldn't turn a block without seeing someone starving, or another person passed on from doing some type of drugs. Feeling a ball in my throat, I swallowed it down and turned my head away from the sight and closed my eyes.

After a while, the truck stopped.

"We are here." Ieuan let out. As the doors opened, soldiers stood on either side. I exited behind him. Upon doing so, a huge cathedral appears in front of me as the bells chimed.

"What is this?" Eira let out, stunned from the sight of it.

"The church of Numen."
