The office had gone quiet in a way Ava hadn't noticed at first. She just sat there in the silence and hadn't said a word in a while.
Damian remained behind his desk, his eyes on the documents in front of him, though he hadn't turned a page in several minutes. Ava sat on the couch opposite, her posture stiff, her hands folded tightly in her lap. She had been quiet for a while now. Too silent for him not to notice.
Her gaze drifted across the room without really seeing anything. The floor-to-ceiling windows. The sharp lines of the furniture. The city stretched out below them, alive and moving, unaware of the knot tightening in her chest.
Finally, she spoke.
"How did he know?"
Damian's pen paused mid-stroke.
She swallowed and lifted her eyes to him. "The man at the motel. How did he know I would be there?"
