Ava had been ready for almost twenty minutes.
She stood in the foyer with her bag clutched in both hands, hee fingers tightening and loosening around the strap every few seconds. She had checked the contents three times already, her phone, notebook and the folded copy of Lily's photo she never went anywhere without, tissues she hoped she wouldn't need. Everything was there. Nothing was missing.
Still, her heart wouldn't slow down.
The house felt different in the early morning. It was silentand exposed. Sunlight streamed through the tall windows, painting the marble floors in soft gold, and yet Ava felt a chill creep up her spine. Her body remembered things her mind tried not to.
The last time she had walked out of these doors, she had nearly died.
The memory rose in her mind invited and her hand subconsciously travelled to her neck when she remembered how hard she had been choked and what happened to Damian after he tried to save her.
