Chapter 122 - Chapter 4: Not Believing in Deities

After finishing Love Metronome, Emiya took out Explosive Dark Fairy by Yamada Elf and started reading.

It was completely different.

One had elegant prose. The other was blunt and overflowing with fan service.

Emiya had to admit something.

He was a bit lowbrow.

He thought Explosive Dark Fairy was several times better than Love Metronome.

As he read, he occasionally smiled to himself.

Yamada Elf clearly understood what men wanted to see and didn't hold back at all.

In that regard alone, she was far ahead of Utaha Kasumigaoka.

Time passed quickly.

Before he realized it, Miyazono Middle School had let out.

Emiya left the café and crossed the street, quietly observing the stream of students.

Soon, he saw the person he was looking for.

A girl in a school uniform, long blonde hair, light-blue eyes, and a bright smile on her round face.

It was hard to believe that such a cheerful girl suffered from an incurable disease.

"Little girl. Little girl."

Emiya called out.

His voice reached Kaori Miyazono as she walked home alone after saying goodbye to her friends.

She froze and looked around.

Her gaze quickly landed on a strange man across the street waving at her.

She pointed at herself, surprised.

"...Are you calling me?"

"Yes," Emiya nodded. "I am."

Kaori hesitated.

Talking to a stranger wasn't a good idea.

But in the end, she crossed the street.

She thought the lonely-looking man might need help.

"Sir... do you need something?"

Emiya didn't mind being called "sir."

To someone her age, that was normal.

"From the moment I saw you, I knew we had a connection," Emiya said seriously, barely holding back his laughter.

"To be honest, I'm a deity who has fallen into the mortal world and encountered a bit of trouble."

"If you're willing to worship me, I can grant you any wish."

Kaori immediately stepped back, wary.

"Sir... is this some new way of spreading a religion?"

Emiya frowned in fake anger.

"Who said anything about spreading a religion? I'm a real deity. Seriously-do people not believe in deities anymore?"

Kaori wanted to laugh but held it back.

She looked at him carefully.

"...Sir, are you okay?"

Emiya huffed.

"So you think there's something wrong with my head. Are girls these days all this rude?"

Kaori straightened up.

"If you're really a deity, then prove it."

"Of course I can."

Emiya glanced around. No one was paying attention.

He held out his hands.

"Watch closely. This is a miracle."

He clapped his hands together.

When he opened them again, a diamond lay in his palm.

Kaori's eyes widened.

She stared for a few seconds, then exclaimed,

"W-what an amazing magic trick!"

Emiya went silent.

"It's a miracle! A miracle!"

"No way," Kaori said firmly. "That's definitely a magic trick."

"Nonsense! I created it from nothing. If that's not a miracle, what is?"

"Huh?" Kaori frowned. "Didn't you say you were a deity?"

"That was just a figure of speech," Emiya replied confidently.

"Alright, little girl. Name anything. No matter what it is, I'll make it appear. Then you'll believe me."

Kaori's eyes lit up.

"Really?"

"Absolutely."

"Then..." she thought for a moment. "Can you make a piano appear?"

"If you can do that, I'll believe you're a deity."

"That's easy."

Emiya rubbed his hands together.

Then stopped.

"Sir? What's wrong?"

"It's not a good place," Emiya said.

"Too conspicuous. If I summon a piano here, it'll attract attention. The authorities would get involved, and that's annoying."

"...Then what do you suggest?"

"There's a park ahead. Hardly anyone there. Let's go there, and I'll do it."

Kaori took another step back.

"Sir... are you trying to lure me somewhere to kidnap me?"

Emiya sighed.

"I'm a deity. Why would I kidnap a little girl?"

"I still don't believe you," Kaori shot back.

"Then what would it take?"

She giggled.

"You're really funny, sir. Trying this hard to prove you're a deity."

Emiya looked helpless.

"Are girls nowadays all this strange?"

"That's rude!" Kaori said cheerfully.

"Since you're a deity, do you know my name?"

"Kaori Miyazono."

Her eyes widened.

"...Sir, are you a stalker?"

"First a kidnapper, now a stalker?" Emiya complained.

"Why won't you believe I'm a deity?"

"Because there are no deities in this world," Kaori said without hesitation.

"Why do you believe that?"

"If deities existed," she said quietly, "why didn't they come when I prayed so many times?"

A trace of sadness passed through her eyes.

Emiya replied calmly,

"But I did come."

Kaori froze.

"There are too many prayers in this world," Emiya continued.

"Deities can't respond to all of them. But I heard yours. So I came."

Kaori stared at him, mouth slightly open.

Emiya raised his hand.

A small bottle appeared.

"This is a panacea. It can cure any illness or injury. Drink it, and you'll be healthy again."

He placed it into her hand.

"So don't be sad," he said gently.

"Go out there and shine, Kaori Miyazono. I'm looking forward to your future."

With that, Emiya ruffled her hair roughly.

Then he turned and walked away.

By the time Kaori reacted, he had vanished into a nearby alley.

"Sir-!"

She ran after him.

But when she reached the alley, she found it was a dead end.

He was gone.

Emiya hadn't actually left.

He was hiding using the power of the Supe Supe no Mi.

Recently, he had developed a new application-Air Door.

By opening a door in the air, he could hide in a strange space, just like Blueno's Doa Doa no Mi.

With further refinement, he could even combine it with instantaneous movement.

He stayed to make sure Kaori drank the panacea.

Otherwise, the trip would be meaningless.

Emiya watched as Kaori, unable to find him, ran home with the bottle.

She told her parents everything.

They thought she had been scammed.

Her father immediately tried to throw the bottle away.

Her mother stopped him.

After some discussion, Kaori drank it.

Only then did Emiya leave quietly.

The panacea was his creation.

It could cure any disease.

Kaori's illness was nothing before it.

There was no need for him to stay.

That night, Emiya returned to Shizuka's house.

He opened the door and saw her lying on the sofa, eating instant noodles.

He sighed.

"You're unbelievably lazy. If you don't want to cook, at least order takeout. It's better than instant noodles."

"None of your business," Shizuka snorted.

"Did you finish what you needed to do today?"

"Pretty much."

"So," she asked casually, "that girl-Kaori Miyazono-was saved?"

Emiya glanced at her sideways.

"Who do you think I am? My panacea cures everything."

"Then who's next?" Shizuka asked, curious.

"Shoko Nishimiya."

"...Another girl with an incurable disease?"

"No," Emiya shook his head.

"She has a hearing impairment. Because of it, she struggles to speak and has been isolated and bullied for a long time."

Shizuka clicked her tongue.

School bullying.

Even she didn't have a perfect solution.

"Do what you think is right," she said.

Emiya nodded.

That was always the plan.
