Chapter 120 - Chapter 2: A World That Refuses to Be Simple

"Hey, what's with that look?"

Inside the bookstore, next to the light novel shelf, Shizuka noticed Emiya staring at several books without blinking. She reached out and waved a hand in front of his eyes.

Emiya came back to himself and let out a wry smile.

"I underestimated this world."

"What do you mean?"

"I thought this was just the My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU world," Emiya said. "But it's not."

"It's a comprehensive world."

"A comprehensive world?" Shizuka froze for a second. "What kind of comprehensive world?"

"To be precise, a world with multiple protagonists." Emiya picked up a copy of Love Metronome.

"You know you're a supporting character in My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, right?"

Shizuka nodded.

Emiya tapped the cover in his hand.

"The author of this book, Kasumi Utako, is actually Utaha Kasumigaoka."

"She's a protagonist from another series-Saekano: How to Raise a Boring Girlfriend."

He put Love Metronome back and picked up another book.

"And this one. Explosive Dark Fairy."

"This was written by Yamada Elf, the protagonist of Eromanga Sensei."

Shizuka's eyes widened.

"So... what you're saying is-"

"This world has at least three male protagonists," Emiya said.

"And more importantly, all of their stories are slice-of-life."

"No superpowers."

"No fantasy."

He paused.

"So I suspect this is a multi-protagonist, multi-story slice-of-life world."

"Maybe even the 'Four Campus Kings' are all here."

Shizuka was stunned, but she understood the implication.

Her world wasn't a single story.

It was a fusion.

Multiple stories.

Multiple male and female protagonists.

But then a question came to her.

"...What are the 'Four Campus Kings'?"

Emiya explained calmly.

"Four students who are supposedly still in school."

"They don't study."

"They only care about dating."

"Yet somehow, all four end up with beautiful girlfriends and spend their days showing off."

Shizuka's face darkened instantly.

She couldn't get married.

She was mocked for it.

And four high school students were out there dating beautiful girls without effort.

Unacceptable.

Her eyes sharpened, and a thick killing intent leaked out.

"As a teacher," she said coldly, "I must correct this behavior and make them understand the importance of studying."

...Right. That's definitely what you're thinking.

Emiya didn't bother hiding anything and listed them one by one.

"The first is the 'energy-saving' protagonist."

"Houtarou Oreki, from Hyouka. Kamiyama High School."

"The second is the emotionless type."

"Kiyotaka Ayanokouji, from Classroom of the Elite. Advanced Nurturing High School."

"The third is the smooth-talking one."

"Sakuta Azusagawa, from Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Minegahara High School in Kanagawa."

"And the fourth..."

Emiya looked at Shizuka and smiled.

Shizuka frowned. "Why are you looking at me?"

Emiya cleared his throat.

"The fourth is the self-destructing protagonist."

"Hachiman Hikigaya."

"From My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU."

"Sobu High School."

Shizuka's face went completely dark.

So she was part of that lineup.

"...Energy-saving, emotionless, smooth-talking, and self-destructing," she muttered, rubbing her temples. "Are there no normal students among them?"

"In my world," Emiya said calmly, "stories where being 'nice' alone gets you the girl aren't popular anymore."

"Now protagonists either make decisive moves or have warped personalities."

"That's how they become winners."

"Wouldn't people like that get ostracized?" Shizuka asked.

She'd been a teacher for years.

She knew how cruel reality was.

Independent people were often excluded.

This world wasn't gentle.

Emiya spread his hands.

"Who cares?"

"As long as they have the heroines, everything else doesn't matter."

"And talented people usually have strange personalities."

Shizuka thought about it.

That was true.

History was full of geniuses with quirks.

If the Four Campus Kings were genuinely talented, their oddities made sense.

Nice guys were becoming rare anyway.

She had wanted to teach all four a lesson.

But reality set in.

She could only reach one of them.

Hachiman Hikigaya.

That realization left her deeply frustrated.

Emiya, meanwhile, had decided not to leave this world.

He wanted to see how many slice-of-life stories had been fused into it.

So he returned to Shizuka's apartment and used her computer to search online.

The results confirmed it.

Kamiyama High School.

Advanced Nurturing High School.

Minegahara High School.

Sobu High School.

All of them existed.

The Four Campus Kings really were in the same world.

What surprised Emiya most was Minegahara High School.

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai wasn't purely slice-of-life.

It had "puberty syndrome."

Supernatural elements.

That shattered his assumption.

This wasn't just slice-of-life.

It was slice-of-life with fantastical distortions.

Then he found another school.

Private Hikarizaka High School.

The school from CLANNAD.

Tomoya Okazaki.

Nagisa Furukawa.

When Emiya first watched CLANNAD, he laughed until he cried during the first season.

Then cried nonstop during the second.

It left a deep impression.

But according to the records-

They had graduated years ago.

The story was already over.

That surprised him.

He had briefly considered helping if the story were ongoing.

Since it wasn't, he dropped the thought.

He kept searching.

Chiba Prefectural Chiba Benten High School.

Right. Oreimo was here too.

Fumizuki Academy.

Even Baka and Test made it in.

Private Yasaka High School.

Masamune-kun's Revenge.

Banshoryo High School.

Nisekoi.

Otonokizaka Academy.

...So even the cult leader was here.

Wait.

Sakurano Academy?

That was bad.

Was Makoto Itou here too?

Emiya seriously considered eliminating him if necessary.

Yes.

That was a very happy decision.

Private Yamaboshi High School?

The name sounded familiar, but he couldn't recall it immediately.

Izumizaka High School?

Oh.

Strawberry 100%.

He remembered the heroines.

Aya Toujou.

Tsukasa Nishino.

Satsuki Kitaoji.

Yui Minamito.

But the male protagonist?

Completely blank.

All he remembered was that he was nice and indecisive.

Nothing else worth noting.

He genuinely didn't understand why the girls liked him.

Compared to the Four Campus Kings, he was far inferior.

Then again, maybe they just hadn't met them.

Maesaki High School?

Right.

My Online Game Wife Is a Girl Online.

He only remembered one thing.

The heroine had big boobs.

Seio Girls' School?

A guy who cross-dressed.

No thanks.

Private Ousai Academy?

Seitokai Yakuindomo.

Private Sakuragaoka Girls' High School?

K-On!

He mentally added the concert to his schedule.

Private Ginko Academy High School.

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions.

Shichimiya-san would probably get along great with Hestia.

He could already see it.

Ichinose Academy?

We Never Learn.

He wasn't interested in Thumbelina or Sleeping Beauty.

But there was one undeniable truth.

Sensei was the best.

Minegashima University Affiliated High School?

...No.

No.

Absolutely not.

Emiya felt his stomach start to hurt.

Looking at one familiar school after another, Emiya finally leaned back.

"How many stories were fused into this world?"

"It really lives up to the name 'comprehensive.'"

"This is ridiculous."

Shizuka, sitting on the sofa and scrolling through her phone, looked up.

"What's ridiculous? What's wrong with my world?"

Emiya shook his head.

"Nothing's wrong."

"I just found too many stories."
