Chapter 44 - Chapter 44 – The Forge of Bonds

The ruins of the fortress echoed with silence after the Herald's departure. Dust still drifted in the shafts of moonlight piercing through broken walls, and the four warriors sat together amidst the rubble. Though battered, they knew this fragile reprieve was their only chance.

Rihan leaned against the wall, his blade resting across his knees. His body still trembled from the aftershock of channeling the Soul Link Strike, but his mind burned with questions.

He replayed the moment again and again—threads of light connecting him to Kael, Elira, and Sirena, their strength converging into one unstoppable blow.

"Why now?" he muttered under his breath.

Elira, sharpening her blades with deliberate strokes, glanced at him. "Because we were desperate. Sometimes the world only shows its secrets when you're standing on the edge of death."

Kael barked a laugh, though the exhaustion in his voice dulled its usual fire. "Desperate or not, it worked. Never thought I'd see the day when I trusted some brat to guide my axe."

Rihan smirked faintly. "You didn't have much of a choice."

Sirena raised her staff, its faint golden glow pulsing softly. "No… it wasn't just desperation. It was trust. The Link connected not just our strength, but our intent, our will. That's why it worked."

Her words fell heavy on them all. For years they had fought side by side, but until now, they had been individuals—fighters bound by circumstance. The Soul Link had forced them to become something more.

Rihan's hand clenched on his sword hilt. "Then we need to master it. If one strike almost broke us, we won't survive another battle without understanding what we just unlocked."

Elira sheathed her blades with a sharp click. "Agreed. If the Herald wants us to 'grow stronger,' let's use his arrogance against him."

The Training Grounds

By dawn, the group had moved deeper into the fortress's ruined courtyards. Cracked stone pillars, once carved with celestial runes, now served as their training posts. The air was thick with lingering corruption, but faint traces of holy wards still kept the area from collapsing entirely.

Kael slammed his axe into a shattered column. "Alright, boy—how do we trigger that Link again? Don't tell me it just happens when we're about to die."

Rihan closed his eyes, focusing inward. The memory of glowing threads hummed faintly in his chest. He extended his hand toward Kael. "It started with me… but I felt you reach back. Like… a door opening both ways."

Sirena stepped closer, staff glowing. "Then let's recreate it. Focus on one another, not just on the enemy."

They began slowly. Rihan reached toward Elira this time, his energy flowing like a thread of light. She hesitated, then let her aura meet his. A faint spark formed between them, flickering before dissolving.

Elira clicked her tongue. "Tch. Not strong enough."

Kael grinned. "Try harder. Don't tell me the 'Ice Queen' can't open up a little."

Her glare could have frozen rivers, but beneath it was the faintest flush of color. She tried again, this time allowing her guard to lower just slightly. The thread glowed brighter.

Sirena lifted her staff, channeling her blessing to stabilize the fragile bond. "Yes… there! Hold it steady."

Suddenly, the courtyard lit with a faint web of golden threads, weaving the four of them together. Power surged, raw but unrefined. The pillars around them cracked from the pressure.

Rihan gasped. "It's working!"

But then, the bond faltered—Elira broke focus, Kael's aura spiked too violently, and the web shattered. The backlash knocked all four of them backward, slamming them into the ground.

Rihan coughed, clutching his chest. "Okay… maybe not like that."

Kael laughed even as he wiped blood from his mouth. "Damn, that hurt. But admit it—we're onto something."

Elira stood, brushing dust from her armor. "We need rhythm. We can't just force it. The Link isn't power—it's harmony."

Sirena nodded, her expression firm. "Exactly. We must learn to breathe as one, fight as one. Only then will the Link obey us."

The Oath

That night, under a fractured sky where stars shone faintly through drifting clouds, the four sat around a small fire. Their training had left them bruised and weary, but not defeated.

Rihan looked at each of them in turn. "The Herald thinks he's giving us time to grow for his amusement. But this isn't a game. If we fail, this world falls."

Elira's eyes glinted in the firelight. "Then we don't fail."

Kael slammed his fist against his chest. "Hells, I've lived for battle my whole life. If this is my last fight, then I'll make sure it counts."

Sirena's gentle voice cut through the heat of their words. "No. It won't be our last fight. We are linked now—our fates, our strength, our hearts. That bond won't break."

Rihan extended his hand toward the center of the firelight. Slowly, Elira placed hers atop his. Then Kael's rough palm. Finally, Sirena's slender fingers.

For a moment, the faint golden threads shimmered again—not forced, not unstable, but natural. A silent vow sealed itself between them.

"We fight together," Rihan whispered.

"Until the end," Elira added.

"Until victory," Kael growled.

"For the world," Sirena finished softly.

And above them, in the shadows of the fortress, unseen eyes watched. The Mistress's form lingered like smoke. Her whisper carried into the night.

"Interesting. Very interesting. Perhaps the Herald has underestimated them after all."
