Chapter 7 - Yokai Butler

Nate, panting lightly from his sprint, leaned on a tree for support. "Okay… I think I lost her…"

He looked around, realizing the trees were thicker here, the air heavier. Then his eyes caught it—half-buried in moss and stone, yet unmistakable.

A machine. Ancient, weathered, but shaped like a capsule dispenser. A carved inscription read: "Insert Coin. Receive Fate."

Nate froze. His eyes widened.

"No way… That's a Crank-a-kai!"

His lips twitched into a grin. "Finally. I was wondering when this would show up. Time to get my Yokai Butler."

From his pocket, he pulled out a coin he'd kept safe since day one—a strange token that pulsed faintly in his palm. He slipped it in and twisted the lever. The machine creaked, shuddered, and then—clunk!

A capsule tumbled out, glowing with light. Nate grabbed it, cracked it open—

FWOOOSH! A blinding light erupted, filling the clearing like fireworks.

When it faded, floating in front of him was… a very round, marshmallow-like ghost. A swirled wisp crowned his head, black markings around his eyes, blue lips, and a permanent little mustache-smile.

The ghost twirled dramatically, arms outstretched.

"Ahem! I am a Yo-kai! Known by many names—ghost, spirit, apparition—but you may simply call me…" He struck a pose. "Whisper!"

Nate smirked, already holding back laughter. "Yep. Knew it. You're late, but I'll take it."

Before Whisper could puff his chest more, four auras flared nearby—tails, ki, magic, and catlike speed crashing into the clearing.

Yasaka, Lily, Kuroka, and Kunou all froze in unison when their eyes landed on… the floating white blob.

Silence. Then, together, four voices spoke the exact same thought:

'…Why is there a floating ghost potato in front of my prophecy child / my son / my future mate?'

Whisper puffed indignantly, placing a hand on his chest.

"Ghost potato?! How dare you! I am a distinguished Yo-kai butler!"

Nate, deadpan, whispered under his breath: "Yeah… good luck convincing them of that."

Whisper froze mid-speech, his beady eyes finally locking onto Yasaka and Kunou. His whole body went stiff, like someone just unplugged his soul.

"W-w-wait a moment…" He squinted, floating closer, then gasped so loud birds flew out of the trees.

"T-t-tails… TAILS!"

Kunou tilted her head, confused. "Eh?"

Whisper pointed a trembling stubby finger, retreating behind Nate like he was using the boy as a human shield.

"N-n-nine-Tailed Fox! Ancient, terrifying, unrivaled Yo-kai queens of legend! What kind of cursed gacha machine did I just come out of?!?!"

Yasaka narrowed her golden eyes, one brow arching. Her aura flared just enough to make Whisper shake like jelly.

"Excuse me? Did you just call me cursed?"

Whisper flailed his arms. "N-no! Not cursed! Majestic! Glorious! Beautiful beyond compare, oh mighty fox matriarch!" He bowed so fast his head nearly hit the dirt.

Kunou puffed her cheeks, tugging her mother's sleeve. "Mama, he's funny. Can we keep him?"

Nate just dragged a hand down his face. '…Great. I wanted a butler, and instead I got a paranoid marshmallow with PTSD.'

Kuroka purred from the side, smirking. "Nyaa~ He's already more entertaining than half the men I've met."

Lily, adjusting her glasses, gave Nate a dry look. "Congratulations, son. You summoned your first clown."

Whisper peeked from behind Nate, whispering frantically in his ear. "Why didn't you warn me your family comes with divine-grade tails and a death-glare subscription?!"

Nate deadpanned, arms crossed. "…Welcome to my life, Whisper. Welcome to my life."

Yasaka walked up to Nate, as Whisper hid behind him, and she sighed as she gave him a gentle smile, as her Shrine maiden outfit moved a bit. "You don't have to worry, little Yokai, I am Yasaka, the leader of the Yokai".

Whisper peeked out from behind Nate, eyes widening as Yasaka's words clicked.

"L-leader? Wait, you're the leader of the entire Yokai clan?!" His jaw practically unhinged. "But that's impossible! The great Tamamo-no-Mae was supposed to reign for eternity, weaving her nine tails of wisdom and terror across the land!"

Lily adjusted her glasses, her tone cool and precise. She gestured toward the weathered stone capsule machine.

"Judging by that relic you came from, and the fact you still believe Tamamo is in charge… you've been sealed away for centuries. Possibly since the Heian period."

Whisper stiffened like someone had thrown cold water on him. His ghostly tail went limp.

"C-centuries?! No wonder my gacha debut was so rusty! All that time wasted, and now the world's gone and changed the leadership without sending me a newsletter!"

Yasaka chuckled softly, covering her mouth with her sleeve. "I'm afraid history moves on, little one."

Kunou tugged her mother's sleeve, giggling. "Mama, he's silly. He doesn't even know what year it is."

Whisper spun in a panic, pointing dramatically at the trees.

"Next you'll tell me samurai aren't running around slicing each other up anymore!"

Nate groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Yeah, welcome to the modern era, Whisper. People have cars, cell phones, and anime now."

Whisper froze. "…Anime?" His eyes sparkled, voice dropping to a reverent whisper. "You mean… the ancient scrolls have evolved?"

Kuroka leaned in with her teasing smile, ears twitching. "Nyaa~ You're more out of touch than a hermit monk. Don't worry, we'll find you some cartoons to catch up on."

Whisper puffed up indignantly, floating higher to regain some dignity.

"Cartoons?! Madam, I am a butler-class Yokai of the highest refinement! I will not—"

Kunou poked his belly mid-speech, making him squeak like a balloon. "Boop."

Everyone laughed. Nate just muttered to himself. "…Yeah, this is my life now. Great."

Nate then spoke. "Actually, I wanna try something, Kunou, do you have a Coin?".

Kunou blinked as she spoke. "Yes, why?"

Nate then spoke. "I wanna see if the Machine has more sealed Yokai"

Lily blinked as she spoke. "I won't do that, if I were you, son, they have sealed for a reason".

Nate and Kunou ignored her, as they put the coin in, as they made the machine flip, as Yasaka narrowed her eyes.

Yasaka spoke in her mind. "That Capsule, the power in it is Equal to an A-rank Yokai".

Yasaka got ready to fight, and as they opened, a cold wind passed by them, and they closed their eyes.

Shards of glass reality fall away, curling and burning like paper. In their place, a frozen wasteland. Came out a beautiful woman

Fair-skinned, feminine Yo-kai with long, dark blue hair that has frosted tips and is styled with an ice crystal hair-clip resembling a tiara. She wears a blue kimono with white, bubbly patterns, a golden-yellow obi tied into a bow at the back, and matching blue sandals

[Insert image of Blizzari]

Blizzaria steps forward, regal and terrifying, fan raised. "A human… how long has it been since I've seen one?"

She flicks her fan. Ice blooms across the trees, everything crystallised like diamonds. For a second, she looks every bit the 7-Star goddess-tier Yo-kai.

Then—

Blizzaria: "Achoo!"

The glow shatters. Her majestic form collapses inward. Standing there now, awkward and pouty, is Frostina.

[Insert image of Frostina]

Frostina then spoke in Frustration "Ughhhh! I was sealed too long, de-levelled! I don't want to grind all over again!"

Nate blinks. "…Wait. So you went from ice queen to… cold middle schooler?"

Yasaka blinked as she spoke in her head. 'She went from A Class Near S Class to High B Class'.

Nate looked at the sulking Ice Spirit, arms crossed and cheeks puffed out as her frosty aura sputtered around her like a faulty air conditioner. 'Yup, just like in the game,' he thought, half amused, half sympathetic.

He crouched down to her level, tilting his head. "Are you okay?"

Frostina snapped her head toward him, eyes shimmering like frozen sapphires, but her pout didn't fade. "I am not! Do you know how long it took me to train, to finally reach my proper form? All those battles, all that grinding, and now look at me! Back to… this! Ughhh!" She stomped her sandal, kicking up a puff of snowflakes that evaporated instantly in Yasaka's warm aura.

Nate blinked. "So… all that work and you got reset?"

"Reset?" Frostina squeaked, scandalized. "This isn't some silly human video game, you know! This is my pride! My legacy!" Her breath frosted in the air as she jabbed her fan accusingly at the capsule machine. "That stupid thing stole everything from me!"

Whisper peeked out from behind Nate, trembling. "I-It makes sense! Some capsules didn't just seal Yo-kai… they compressed them. Their power, their memories, their very level frozen in time! A cruel fate indeed!"

Kunou tilted her head. "So… she's like a nine-tailed fox that's been forced back into a kit form?"

Frostina froze, then wailed dramatically, collapsing to her knees. "Don't compare me to a baby fox! I am—was—the goddess of blizzards! The snow queen of Yokai-kind! And now I'm… I'm…" she sniffled, "…stuck in the body of an awkward middle-schooler again!"

Nate sighed, scratching his cheek. "Well… at least you're cute?"

Frostina's face went crimson as steam rose from her head, snowflakes popping midair. "Y-you can't just say that so casually!"

Yasaka folded her arms, watching the tantrum with sharp eyes. "She might be weaker now, but if this one regains her former form, she could easily shake the balance of Kyoto… Nate, what exactly have you unleashed?"

Kuroka arched a brow, flicking her tail as she studied Whisper. "So… does that mean the same thing happened to you as Blizzaria, nya? You got reset?"

Whisper puffed up his chest proudly, even though he was still half-hiding behind Nate. "Nonsense! I was not sealed in some degrading de-levelled state! I was found in my prime, fully prepared to assist my human partner as a proper Yo-kai butler!"

Nate deadpanned. "…No, I found him just like that."

Kunou giggled into her sleeve. "So… he's always been a floating potato?"

Whisper gasped, offended, his moustache quivering. "I'll have you know, young lady, I am a distinguished spirit of impeccable taste and wisdom!"

Frostina crossed her arms, sulking. "Wisdom? Then why do I feel like you don't know half the things you pretend to?"

Whisper immediately fumbled with his ghostly tablet, scrolling frantically. "N-Now, now, I'll have you know I carry the entire encyclopedia of Yo-kai knowledge in here!"

Nate smirked, muttering under his breath. "Yeah, (in his mind: and just like in the anime, he probably won't know squat when I actually need him)."

The next few days had passed, and both Whisper and Frostina were getting used to the new life.

They had first learn that Lily was the last Generation Yokai seer, which made her highly respected by the two Yokai

Then they learned Nate was the Child of Prophecy, as they both had passed out, and Nate chuckled.

After that, they were given two different things, one Whisper. Mostly, it helped our Nate, Das, Aaron and Lily in normal human activity, using Tanuki magic to hide their Yokai side.

As for Frostina, she wanted to get back to her true self, so she was added to the training of Nate and Kunou, as she was the Hazard maker. During this time, Nate had been improving in Spirit Bond and had learned how to cast spells with it.

Which was getting easier, as days passed, this happened.

Lily just blinked as she saw her son. "And how did this happen".

Nate was sitting on the couch with Kunou, as Frostina and Whisper floated next to him, and on his lap was another Yokai

A red and white cat Yo-kai with a chip in his left ear, yellow eyes with large black pupils, and pink inner ears and nose. He wears an aquamarine bell on a collar and has blue flames at the ends of his two tails.

[Insege image of Jibanyan]

Nate looked at his Mother as he spoke. "Long Story short, he was trying to fight a truck".

Lily just stared, her eyebrow twitching as she repeated herself. "A truck. My seven-year-old son found a spirit… trying to fight a truck?"

Nate sighed, scratching his cheek. "Yeah… pretty much. He yelled something about revenge and then got flattened again. I couldn't just leave him there."

Kunou covered her mouth to hide her laughter. "He kept shouting 'I'll beat you this time, Truck!' It was… kind of cute."

Whisper groaned dramatically, floating in circles. "Oh, the indignity! A once-proud warrior reduced to challenging vehicles! What a pitiful display for a Yo-kai!"

Jibanyan sat up on Nate's lap, flames flickering as he growled. "Hey! Don't mock me, floating potato! That truck is my sworn enemy! One day, I'll get my revenge, nyan!"

Frostina, sitting cross-armed, let out an exasperated sigh. "Great. So now we have a ghost butler who panics at foxes, and a cat obsessed with cars. What's next, a Yo-kai toaster?"

Nate just leaned back, grinning to himself. 'Yup. Just like the games and anime… My life's officially turning into a Yo-kai Watch episode, but in DxD world.'
