Chapter 37 – The Buried Mushi Devil Lord

A cold, unnatural wind howled through the Mushroom Grove Dungeon, carrying with it an eerie chill that seeped into the bones. The once-vibrant glowing fungi that had illuminated the caverns like living lanterns began to dim one after another. Their soft, ethereal light faded as if some ravenous entity deep beneath the earth was greedily devouring every trace of surrounding mana.

Deep underground—far below the first floor that Glic had meticulously transformed into a productive Dungeon Farm—an ancient heartbeat echoed through the impenetrable darkness.

*Boom...*

*Boom...*

*Boom...*

Each powerful pulse sent ripples through the stone, causing countless mushrooms to violently release clouds of glowing spores. Ancient runes carved into the bedrock flickered faintly to life before dying out again, as though struggling against an overwhelming force.

Something ancient and terrible was trying to awaken.

Inside the secure Dungeon Management Chamber beneath Goldbear Manor, Glic suddenly froze mid-sentence while drafting new trade agreements. A urgent blue notification materialized before his eyes, its edges flashing with warning crimson.

> **Warning!**

> Abnormal Mana Fluctuation Detected.

> Mushroom Grove Dungeon Stability: 92%... 91%... 90%...

> Unknown Source Located.

> Estimated Depth: Floor 7+

> Threat Level: Unknown.

Glic frowned deeply, his sharp mind racing. "Floor Seven? My exploration teams haven't even located the entrance to the second floor yet."

What everyone had assumed was merely a minor, manageable dungeon was proving far more complex—and dangerous—than anticipated. The System's assessment carried an unmistakable gravity that could not be ignored.

Within minutes, Glic had assembled his most trusted officers in the war room. Captain Reinhardt stood at rigid attention, his armored frame imposing. Sariah, ever calm and analytical, reviewed the mana readings. Krex appeared via a glowing communication crystal orb from his post near Valebridge. Tovin, the sharp-witted tactician, studied the maps intently. Even the Bugbear Commander Drog was present, his massive form hunched over the table.

A detailed map of the known dungeon floors lay spread across the heavy oak table. Glic pointed to the deepest explored section.

"Our scouts have only mapped the first floor thoroughly. The entrance to the second floor remains hidden. Yet whatever is stirring below is already affecting the entire dungeon structure."

Captain Reinhardt's brow furrowed. "Could it be the emergence of a new monster boss?"

Tovin shook his head firmly. "Boss monsters don't generate mana waves of this magnitude. This feels… different."

Sariah spoke quietly, her voice carrying a note of unease. "It almost feels like something that was deliberately sealed away is beginning to break free."

A heavy silence descended over the room.

Later that evening, Glic retreated to the manor's extensive library. Towering shelves filled with dusty tomes and scrolls stretched into the shadows. Most volumes dated back centuries, many inherited from previous Goldbear lords or acquired through recent trade.

He searched tirelessly for any mention of the Mushroom Grove. After several exhausting hours, his efforts were rewarded with an old, brittle leather journal. Its pages were yellowed and fragile, many sections faded beyond recognition. The title, embossed in faded gold lettering, read:

**Survey of Northern Fae Wood Ruins**

*Written nearly four hundred years ago by Archivist Maelor.*

One particular passage immediately seized his full attention:

> "...The forest conceals an ancient battlefield where the White Wizards united against an infernal invader known only as the Mushi Devil Lord. Unable to destroy the seemingly immortal creature, the allied wizards buried it beneath a massive sealing formation. To conceal the prison, they cultivated magical fungi over the battlefield... Future generations must never disturb the Seventh Seal..."

Glic slowly closed the journal, his expression turning grave. "So… the dungeon wasn't a natural formation after all. It was a prison."

According to the remaining legible pages, nearly six hundred years ago a being from another plane of existence had torn its way into the world. It was neither demon, nor magical beast, nor wizard. It commanded endless swarms of ravenous insects. Its body regenerated endlessly from even the most catastrophic wounds. Every insect it consumed or controlled became an extension of its ever-growing army.

Entire cities had vanished beneath black, living clouds of locusts and beetles. The Kingdom of Fae Wood had nearly collapsed under the onslaught. Only after thirteen powerful Law Gate Wizards, supported by hundreds of Formal Wizards and Auxiliary forces, managed to subdue the creature. Even then, they could not kill it.

Instead, they sealed it deep beneath the earth using forbidden magics. Over the centuries, ambient mana accumulated around the seal. The battlefield transformed into a sprawling fungal ecosystem as the magical mushrooms absorbed and neutralized the leaking infernal energy. Eventually, memory of the true horror faded into legend, and the prison became known simply as the Mushroom Grove Dungeon.

Suddenly, the System activated with unusual solemnity.

> **Ancient Heritage Quest Detected**

> **The Buried Mushi Devil Lord**

**Objective:** Investigate the Ancient Seal.

**Optional Objectives:**

- Strengthen the Seven Seals.

- Discover the Devil Lord's Origin.

**Rewards:**

- Ancient Fusion Knowledge

- Unknown Heritage

- Hidden Bloodline Information

**Failure:**

Devil Lord Awakens.

Glic stared at the notification in silence. For the first time, even the System had left the full rewards partially obscured. That alone told him the entity buried below far exceeded his current level of understanding.

The following morning, Glic personally led a small but elite expedition into the dungeon. He brought only his most capable forces: Captain Reinhardt, three battle-hardened Hobgoblins, five Dire Wolves, three Giant Eagles soaring overhead for reconnaissance, a squad of Stun Frogs, and the loyal Myco-Hounds.

Accompanying them was Luna Ashvale, who had introduced herself as a wandering scholar specializing in dungeon ecology. Although Glic knew full well she was an agent from the Wizard Tower, he allowed her to join. It was better to keep potential threats close where he could observe her every move.

The group reached the First Floor Boss Chamber. The massive corpse of the former Spore Lord had long since been cleared away. In its place, the enormous central mushroom had grown even larger, its cap pulsing with faint, ominous light.

Glic activated *Detect Magic*. His eyes widened as an enormous, intricate web of mana lines revealed itself beneath the ground. "So many runes… This giant mushroom isn't just a plant. It's a key component of a much larger magical formation."

Using *Mage Hand*, Glic carefully cleared away layers of glowing moss and fungal growth. A large circular stone plate emerged, its surface densely covered in glowing runes.

Luna stepped closer, unable to hide her reaction. "Ancient High Wizard Script…" she whispered unconsciously.

Glic raised an eyebrow. "A simple wandering scholar who can read High Wizard Script?"

Luna coughed awkwardly. "I've… read quite a few books in my travels."

Neither fully believed the other's facade, but both maintained the polite pretense—for now.

After solving a series of complex ancient rune puzzles that tested both intellect and magical intuition, the massive stone plate slid aside with a deep, grinding rumble. A narrow staircase descended into absolute darkness. A rush of cold, stale air carrying the unmistakable scent of death and decay washed over them.

The second floor was utterly unlike the vibrant, mushroom-filled upper level. There were no glowing fungi here. No colorful drifting spores. Instead, the caverns were dominated by towering black crystal pillars that absorbed light. Countless insect skeletons littered the ground—some over ten meters long, others possessing dozens of razor-sharp legs and mandibles capable of shearing through steel.

Even the battle-hardened Captain Reinhardt tightened his grip on his sword. "What in the name of the gods happened here?"

Luna answered quietly, her voice tinged with scholarly awe and unease. "This… was a battlefield. A cataclysmic one."

---

As the expedition pressed deeper, mana suddenly coalesced in the air. A gigantic stone statue emerged from the shadows—a towering knight clad in archaic wizard-armor. Its eyes flared with emerald light.

A deep, resonant voice echoed through the chamber:

> "Identify yourselves. Those who approach the Seventh Seal must state their purpose."

Glic stepped forward confidently. "I am Glic Goldbear, Lord of this territory. I seek to investigate the disturbance above."

The guardian remained motionless for several tense moments. Then its eyes blazed brighter.

> "Authority… Recognized."

> "Successor… Incomplete."

Suddenly, every member of the expedition froze in place, paralyzed by an invisible force. Only Glic remained free to move. The guardian stared directly into his eyes.

> "Bearer… of the Ancient Fusion Authority."

Glic's heart skipped a beat. *Fusion Authority?*

The guardian continued solemnly:

> "Your predecessor… failed."

A heavy silence fell. Then, without warning, cracks spiderwebbed across the guardian's stone chest. Ancient sealing chains burst apart with metallic shrieks. The guardian looked upward, its voice growing urgent.

> "The Seventh Seal weakens…"

> "The Mushi Devil Lord… has begun dreaming once more."

A deafening roar erupted from the depths far below. The entire cavern shook violently. Dust and debris rained from the ceiling as the ground trembled.

The System blared an emergency warning:

> **Critical Alert!**

> Seal Integrity: 71%

> The Devil Lord Resurrection

> **Current Objective:** Reach the Seventh Floor before the seal collapses.

> Time Remaining:** Unknown.

Glic tightened his fists, resolve hardening in his eyes. What he had believed to be a simple resource dungeon was, in reality, one of the most dangerous places in the entire Kingdom of Fae Wood. And somewhere deep beneath his territory, an immortal Mushi Devil Lord was stirring from a six-hundred-year slumber.
