Chapter 242 - Blueprint(3)

Wind Release.

The answer came quickly.

Fire and Wind already worked naturally together.

If he learned Wind Release himself, he could reproduce at least part of the synergy he'd previously relied on Mariko to provide.

And there was another possibility.

His summon.

If he eventually found a summon capable of Wind Release...

Satoru's eyes sharpened.

Then I could recreate team-level elemental cooperation with only two combatants.

Himself.

And his summon.

A one-man combat unit with an additional independent partner.

That sounded considerably more useful than simply finding something big that could punch hard.

He nodded slightly.

Primary Fire.

Secondary Wind.

That seemed settled.

Lightning could wait.

Water could wait.

Earth could wait.

He didn't need to master every element.

He needed the ones that fit his strategy.

Then another thought struck him.

Satoru sat up slightly.

"The Rasengan."

He stared ahead.

Of course.

He had almost forgotten.

The Rasengan was practically the perfect example of what he needed.

Concentrated power.

No unnecessary area of effect.

No requirement for a massive elemental technique.

Just an enormous amount of destructive force compressed into a small space.

There was one rather obvious problem.

I don't have Naruto's chakra reserves.

Satoru's expression flattened.

He could already imagine someone handing him the technique and expecting him to use it repeatedly.

He would run dry long before his opponent did.

But that didn't make the technique worthless.

Quite the opposite.

It made it something he needed to use carefully.

One hit.

That was enough.

The question was how to learn it.

He could try to find someone who knew it.

Minato was the obvious possibility.

Which immediately made Satoru reconsider.

No.

Asking Minato directly would create questions.

Why do I want this?

How do I know about it?

Why this particular technique?

Too many complications.

There had to be another way.

Written information.

Existing chakra-control knowledge.

Reverse-engineering.

His Sharingan.

Satoru's expression changed.

Why am I thinking of learning it by copying the finished product?

He didn't need to.

He could treat the Rasengan as a technical problem.

Rotation.

Power.

Containment.

Stability.

Four problems.

Solve them individually.

Then combine them.

His Sharingan could help him observe the necessary chakra manipulation.

His analytical mind could break the process down.

And if he failed?

Try again.

He didn't need someone to hand him the answer.

He needed the principles.

I'll reconstruct it myself.

The Rasengan went onto the long-term list.

High cost.

High damage.

Selective use.

Exactly the sort of weapon he wanted.

Then another technique surfaced.

Lightning.

Chidori.

Satoru considered it.

The logic was almost identical.

A concentrated attack.

Extremely high output.

Short engagement.

Minimal wasted chakra.

And unlike a large-scale ninjutsu technique, its purpose wasn't to obliterate everything in front of him.

It was to kill one target.

Quickly.

Efficiently.

His Sharingan would also solve one of the technique's major problems.

At high speed, the attacker's vision could become a liability.

But with the Sharingan...

Prediction.

Targeting.

Precision.

Satoru's mouth twitched.

That actually fits me rather well.

Wind could remain his secondary elemental specialisation.

Lightning didn't have to be.

He could simply learn Chidori as a specialised technique.

Another item for the list.

Then he thought about the Sharingan itself.

He had been treating it too much like a ninjutsu ability.

Something that consumed chakra.

Something powerful that he activated when necessary.

But that wasn't its most important function.

Perception.

Prediction.

Reading movement.

Recognizing patterns.

Seeing through feints.

The Sharingan didn't need to destroy anything to be useful.

And when combined with the Gates...

Satoru's eyes narrowed.

He imagined the sequence again.

His opponent moved.

The Sharingan read it.

The First Gate accelerated his body.

He didn't need to overpower the attack.

He simply needed his body to move fast enough to take advantage of what his eyes had already seen.

That was the real synergy.

The Sharingan told him when.

The Gates gave him the physical ability to act when.

Suddenly his reduced chakra reserves seemed slightly less crippling.

He didn't need more chakra if he could extract more value from every movement.

Before, I needed more.

Satoru looked down at his hands.

Now I need more value.

There was a difference.

His thoughts briefly drifted toward the Mangekyō Sharingan.

That was tempting.

Obviously.

The abilities associated with it were on an entirely different level.

But there was a problem.

He couldn't simply decide to obtain it.

And he certainly wasn't going to deliberately destroy himself emotionally just to force it awake.

If it happened...

It happened.

Until then, he had three tomoe.

That was already an extraordinary weapon.

He would master what he actually possessed before worrying about what he might someday acquire.

Control what I can control.

That brought him to genjutsu.

Satoru frowned.

His genjutsu was underdeveloped.

That couldn't remain true.

He didn't need something on the level of Tsukuyomi.

He didn't even need to completely dominate someone's mind.

What did he actually need?

A moment.

A single mistake.

Make an enemy see something that wasn't there.

Make them misjudge distance.

Make them look in the wrong direction.

Distort their perception for a fraction of a second.

That was enough.

Against an ordinary opponent, perhaps it wasn't decisive.

Against someone equally skilled?

One mistake could determine the entire battle.

Satoru nodded slowly.

I don't need to control their mind.

I need to control one moment.

That was another efficiency weapon.

Small chakra investment.

Potentially enormous tactical payoff.

Then Ren's words returned.

His altered chakra composition.

Closer to balanced.

Satoru's expression became thoughtful.

The Yamanaka.

He had spent years assuming certain aspects of their techniques weren't practical for him.

Too Yin-heavy.

Poor compatibility.

Inefficient.

But that assumption had been based on the old him.

Was it still true?

He didn't know.

Which meant he needed to find out.

And the more he thought about it, the more appealing the idea became.

Sharingan.

Genjutsu.

Yamanaka techniques.

Three different ways to interfere with an opponent's perception or mind.

And the Yamanaka arsenal offered far more than simple mental attacks.

Intelligence gathering.

Communication.

Interrogation.

Coordination.

Non-lethal options.

Battlefield control.

Satoru's eyes narrowed.

Another way to get more value out of less chakra.

That was becoming the foundation of everything.

He didn't need every attack to be bigger.

He needed every action to accomplish more.

His thoughts shifted.

Individual techniques were one thing.

But what did all of them actually become when combined?

He already had the Mind Mirror series.

Those techniques had been built around thoughts.

Mental processes.

Perception.

His own experiments with the mind.

But perhaps that wasn't enough anymore.

He wanted something more aggressive.

Something designed specifically for combat.

He began mentally combining the pieces.

Sharingan.

Yamanaka techniques.

Genjutsu.

Mental manipulation.

Perception.

Chakra control.

His analytical approach.

His Uchiha heritage.

The fire he'd already built his identity around.

He wanted a technique family.

Not one jutsu.

A system.

Something that belonged to him rather than simply being another technique borrowed from a clan or reconstructed from someone else's work.

Mind Mirror deals with thoughts.

So what came next?

Something that attacked.

Something that burned through an opponent's certainty.

Something that turned perception itself into a weapon.

His thoughts cycled through names.

Nothing worked.

He rejected one.

Then another.

Too obvious.

Too grandiose.

Too stupid.

He sighed.

Then a word surfaced.

Satoru went still.

He looked toward the ceiling.

Mindfire.

The word connected more pieces than he expected.

Mind.

The Yamanaka.

Genjutsu.

Perception.

Mental manipulation.

Fire.

His Uchiha heritage.

His primary elemental affinity.

And the philosophy he'd been developing since the poisoning.

Not overwhelming power.

Not endless chakra.

Make every unit of power matter.

Turn perception into offence.

Turn thought into a weapon.

Satoru's expression slowly changed.

Mindfire.

That sounded right.

His eyes narrowed with quiet satisfaction.

For the first time since he'd begun rebuilding his future, one of the pieces felt like it had found its proper place.

"Mindfire," he murmured.

He let the word linger in the room.

Then he leaned back against the pillow.

There was still an enormous amount of work ahead of him.

First, he needed his body back.

Then the Gates.

Sensory training.

Fire Release.

Wind Release.

The Sharingan.

Genjutsu.

The Yamanaka techniques, if they proved compatible.

Rasengan.

Chidori.

A summon.

Perhaps, one day, senjutsu.

It was a ridiculous list.

Satoru stared at the ceiling.

Then, despite himself, he smiled.

At least he wouldn't be bored.
