Chapter 214 - Plenty To Work With

Satoru stood at one end of the clearing, his posture relaxed, his breathing steady, his mind already turning over the possibilities of what was to come. At the opposite end, Shisui stood with the same casual grace that had always defined him, his hands at his sides, his expression unreadable. The distance between them was more than physical; it was the gap between where Satoru was and where he aspired to be.

Neither announced the start. A few seconds of complete silence stretched between them, heavy with anticipation, thick with unspoken words. They simply watched one another; two shinobi, separated by experience, connected by history, bound by the fragile thread of a relationship that had been strained by time and distance. Satoru remembered Shisui's words: "Show me who you have become." His internal response was immediate, his decision absolute.

Then do not hold back.

Satoru took the initiative. He launched into an aggressive opening, his body moving with the fluid precision that had been honed through months of training, through countless hours of practice, through the crucible of the Chunin Exams and the Intelligence rotation. He threw several shuriken, their trajectories deceptive, their patterns designed to create openings, to force Shisui to react, to reveal his patterns.

He mixed real weapons with transformed shadow clones, a tactic designed to confuse and overwhelm, to create uncertainty in the mind of his opponent. He used the distraction to complete hand seals, his chakra surging as he shaped it into fire. "Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique."

The flame erupted, a roaring sphere of heat and light that shot toward Shisui with the force of a cannon. The air around it shimmered, the grass beneath it blackened, and the training posts nearby seemed to lean away from its intensity. But instead of aiming directly at Shisui, Satoru angled it to force Shisui toward a predicted escape route. Immediately after, he used Body Flicker to intercept, drawing a kunai for close combat. His internal reasoning was sharp, his mind racing through the calculations.

Do not attack where he is. Attack where he will have to be.

Shisui barely moved. He took one step sideways, a single, economical motion, and the fireball missed by a hand's breadth, its heat washing over the space he had occupied a moment before. He tilted his head, a fraction of an inch, and the kunai passed harmlessly, its edge slicing through empty air. He redirected a shuriken with two fingers, his touch light, his control absolute, and its trajectory was altered, its threat neutralised. He gently tapped Satoru's wrist, a feather-light touch that disrupted his hand seals, and the technique stopped halfway. No counterattack, only correction.

"Too committed," Shisui said, his voice calm, his words carrying the weight of experience. "Leave yourself another option."

Satoru refused to slow down. He rapidly changed approaches, his mind racing through possibilities, his body responding with practised precision. He combined Fireball with smoke cover, hidden shuriken, and Body Flicker from a blind spot. Shisui evaded effortlessly, his movements fluid, his responses instantaneous. He raised low stone ridges with Earth Release, restricting movement, then funnelled Shisui toward terrain with Fire Release. Shisui simply stepped across the rocks, his movements unhurried, his balance perfect, his attention never wavering. He used his Sharingan to predict Shisui's movements, attempting to read his rhythm, his intent, his next action. He failed because Shisui changed rhythm constantly, his patterns unpredictable, his movements fluid, his intentions hidden behind a veil of calm.

Satoru's internal thoughts grew sharper, more analytical.

He is reading everything. Every adjustment, every intention. How?

His Memory Palace began organizing observations, searching for patterns, looking for explanations. Timing? Eyes? Experience? Body language? Nothing fully explained it. The gap between them was not just skill; it was a fundamental difference in how they perceived the battle, how they processed information, how they responded to the chaos of combat.

Shisui's internal thoughts shifted briefly, his perspective broadening. He observed Satoru's approach, noting the unconventional tactics, the blending of systems, the refusal to conform to any single style.

He is not fighting traditionally. He does not rely solely on the Sharingan, or solely on Yamanaka methods, or imitate Academy fundamentals, or imitate Uchiha style. Instead, every attack tries combining systems; fire, terrain, movement, observation, prediction, misdirection.

The realisation was striking. Satoru was inventing his own style, a fusion of influences that was uniquely his, a synthesis of bloodlines and training that was more than the sum of its parts. That fascination was genuine, a recognition of potential that had not yet been fully realised.

Shisui decided Satoru had shown enough. He finally attacked; simple, fast, one strike. A palm to the shoulder, precise and controlled, carrying the weight of his experience. Satoru was launched backwards, his body flying through the air, crashing through several training logs. The wood splintered beneath him, dust erupting from the impact. Silence followed, the only sound the settling of debris.

Satoru rose slowly, bruised, breathing harder, his body protesting the force of the impact. He immediately attacked again, no complaints, no frustration, only determination. Shisui smiled slightly, a flicker of approval in his expression. The persistence was admirable, the refusal to yield a testament to his character. He had been knocked down, but he had not been defeated.

Now Satoru became more experimental, his combinations growing increasingly complex, his tactics more daring. He created an Earth Release wall, launched a Fireball over it, and used Body Flicker through the smoke, emerging from the cloud with his kunai already extended. Shisui anticipated the move, evading with minimal effort, his body flowing like water around the attack. He threw chakra-infused wire between trees, creating restricted movement lanes, and fired Phoenix Flower Jutsu through the openings, attempting to herd Shisui into a finishing strike. Shisui noticed immediately, cut one wire, and the entire setup collapsed, its structure falling apart like a house of cards. Satoru used his Sharingan prediction, changing his attack midway after reading Shisui's reaction, attempting a double feint. Shisui had already anticipated both layers, his experience allowing him to see through the deception.

Each combination was clever, each tactic well-executed, each attempt a testament to Satoru's creativity and determination. But against Shisui, cleverness was not enough. The gap between them was not just in skill, but in experience, in understanding, in the ability to anticipate and adapt.

Shisui's expression changed slightly. Not serious-serious, but no longer letting Satoru dictate the tempo. Now Shisui moved first, and everything became faster. He began dismantling combinations before they existed, interrupting hand seals before they could form, redirecting kunai before they could strike, breaking stance before it could be established, stepping inside attacks before they could be launched, and forcing Satoru to constantly reset. The lesson was clear; this was what a jōnin actually looked like. This was the level Satoru was striving to reach.

Instead of mocking, Shisui critiqued, his voice calm, his words precise. After each failed exchange, he offered observation. "You hesitated." Another. "Tunnel vision." Another. "You are assuming your opponent reacts logically." Another. "Sometimes the strongest answer is irrational." Another. "Do not become attached to your own plan."

Satoru absorbed every word, his mind filing them away for future use, his body adjusting to the feedback. The spar was becoming a lesson, each exchange a teaching moment, each failure an opportunity for growth.

Shisui remembered Academy Satoru, always asking "What if…", always trying unusual techniques, always mixing ideas, always pushing the boundaries of what was expected. He realised that nothing had changed, only the scale. Instead of childish creativity, it was now disciplined innovation. For the first time all morning, Shisui smiled naturally. Good, he thought. Do not lose that.

Satoru realised he was almost out of chakra, his reserves depleted, his body aching. One final attempt, his best combination yet. He combined everything: Earth Release forced a terrain shift, Body Flicker closed the distance, Phoenix Flower Jutsu limited escape angles, Great Fireball followed immediately, and his Sharingan tracked the expected exit. A finishing kunai strike was synchronised, everything committed, everything executed with precision.

The flames cleared. Shisui was gone. Satoru's Sharingan searched, tracking movement, scanning the clearing for any sign of his opponent. Too late. A calm voice came from behind him. "Good." One precise strike, and the fight ended instantly. Satoru froze, then fell to one knee, exhausted.

Silence returned to the training ground, the only sound his ragged breathing. Shisui did not declare victory. Instead, he said, "You have given me plenty to work wit
