Chapter 398 - Chapter 398: The Ring That Whispered Her Name

Deep beneath the Gaunt ancestral home, the tunnel stretched forward into darkness. Rough stone walls glistened with dampness, the air thick and heavy with the scent of wet earth and old rot.

Dumbledore led the way. Lucien followed close behind. Several floating orbs of soft white light drifted around them, pushing back the shadows and revealing the uneven path and the jagged stone on either side.

They had been falling into traps since the moment they dropped through the floor above. So far, every one of them had been survived.

The ring they had found earlier in that wooden box had been a fake. A decoy. But the crest carved into it had still caught Dumbledore's eye.

The tunnel widened. Ahead lay a chamber carved straight from the living rock. In its center stood a low, thick stone pillar. Resting on top of it was a plain stone box.

Dumbledore stepped up to it and tapped the lid with his wand. It slid open without a sound.

Dark red velvet lined the inside. Nestled in the center was a ring.

A golden band. A single, perfectly smooth black gemstone set into it. The surface drank the light like a void.

It looked identical to the fake they had found earlier. But the magic rolling off this one was heavier. Older. Far more solid.

The moment Dumbledore's eyes landed on that black gem, his gaze locked onto it. His pupils widened behind his half-moon spectacles.

At the same time, a voice drifted into his ears.

Faint. Distant. As though it had traveled across decades to reach him. It seemed to rise from somewhere deep inside the stone itself.

"Albus… brother…"

Soft. Familiar in a way that made his chest tighten.

Dumbledore's face went slack with shock. His lips parted. The name slipped out before he could stop it.

"Ariana?"

His hand moved on its own. Fingers trembling, he reached for the ring, desperate to close the distance, to catch that voice before it faded.

"Headmaster, are you all right?"

Lucien's voice cut through the moment like cold water.

At the same time, a firm hand closed around Dumbledore's arm and pulled him back — not hard, but enough to break the spell.

Lucien flicked his wand. The stone box snapped shut.

The instant the black gem disappeared from sight, the voice vanished with it.

Dumbledore stood very still. His breathing was ragged at first, then slowly steadied. It felt like waking from a dream he hadn't realized he was having.

He let out a long breath and adjusted his spectacles with a slightly unsteady hand. For several seconds he said nothing.

Then, quietly:

"If I am not mistaken… the black stone set in that ring is the legendary Resurrection Stone. Death's own gift. The power to bring back the dead. One of the three Deathly Hallows."

He lifted the strange, gnarled wand in his hand and gave it a small shake.

"This wand is another. The Elder Wand. Once we are out of here, I will tell you everything about them."

Lucien simply nodded. His eyes stayed on the closed stone box.

"I can feel a curse on it," he said. "Very faint. Deliberately suppressed. You would only notice it if you got close."

Dumbledore looked at him with something like quiet gratitude mixed with lingering shock. Lucien's sensitivity to curses had always been sharp, but in moments like this it was invaluable.

If the boy had not stopped him, Dumbledore might have picked up the ring without a second thought. Might have slipped it onto his finger.

He still did not know whether the voice that had called to him was the Resurrection Stone's own power… or something Voldemort had added when he turned the ring into a Horcrux.

The diary had been one of Tom Riddle's early experiments — perhaps not even fully intentional. But this ring had been crafted later. By the time Voldemort placed a fragment of his soul inside it, he had already become something far darker. Far more deliberate.

Any curse he had laid upon it would be hidden. Patient. Lethal.

Dumbledore's guilt over Ariana had nearly cost him everything in that single moment of weakness.

He had never imagined Voldemort would actually find the Resurrection Stone.

And turn it into one of his own.
