Chapter 125 - Chapter 124: Ramen and Laughter! The Banquet of the Future Chunin

Author's Note: Sorry for the long wait! My head has been absolutely killing me, so editing was out of the question for a bit. Because of that, I'm lagging behind, and I'm not 100% sure this chapter hits the mark. I'll be double-checking it tomorrow and aiming to post the missing chapters ASAP. Hope you guys like it!

Naruto led the group with energetic steps, although his posture was slightly different than usual. Hinata rested on his back in a piggyback position with an expression of complete serenity. The Hyuga heiress had her cheek softly leaned against Naruto's blonde hair, her eyes half-closed in a state of comfortable relaxation she rarely allowed herself to show in public.

"Are you okay, Hinata-chan?" Naruto asked for the third time in the last five minutes, turning his head slightly to try and see her.

"I'm fine, Naruto-kun," she replied in a soft voice, though she made no move to pull away. "I already told you, I'm just a little tired."

"I just don't want you to fall," he insisted, adjusting his grip on the girl's legs to make sure she was secure.

"I'm not going to fall," Hinata assured him. "I trust you."

Naruto felt his chest swell with warmth.

Behind them, Sakura walked alongside Ino. Both kunoichi exchanged competitive glances every few steps despite the smiles adorning their faces.

"I can't believe we all passed," Ino commented, stretching her arms above her head with evident satisfaction. "Konoha practically hogged all the spots for the finals."

"Well, not all of us," Sakura corrected in a tone that tried to be casual but couldn't completely hide her joy. "You lost to me, remember?"

"Oh, are you going to start with that again, Billboard Brow?" Ino replied, her right eye narrowing dangerously. "That was just luck."

"Not at all! Everyone saw it!"

Tenten, walking beside them, let out a sigh of resignation as she watched the exchange with a patient expression.

"You know, you could just enjoy the moment instead of fighting," she suggested, though her tone indicated she knew perfectly well her words would fall on deaf ears.

"We are not fighting!" Sakura and Ino said in unison, then looked at each other in surprise at their synchronization.

"Of course not," Tenten muttered.

At the back of the group, Might Guy walked with his characteristic energetic stride. Temari was at his side, still processing how exactly she had ended up as part of this strange Konoha group.

"It is truly wonderful to see the youth of Konoha shine with such intensity!" Guy exclaimed, his white teeth flashing as he smiled broadly. "Lee would be so proud to see this!"

The mention of Rock Lee brought a momentary pause to the group's conversation.

"We'll bring him ramen when we go visit him," Naruto promised, his voice full of determination. "He loves ramen as much as I do! Well, at least I think so."

"He'll probably be more excited about that than any formal gift," Tenten commented with an affectionate smile. "Lee is simple like that with his tastes."

"Simple?" Temari repeated, raising an eyebrow.

"I mean his personal preferences," Tenten clarified. "Lee doesn't need elaborate things to be happy. Training, his friends, and good food; that's all he really cares about."

"Sounds... refreshing, I guess," Temari admitted after a moment of consideration.

The group finally arrived at Ichiraku Ramen, the small stall that had become an emblematic spot for many of Konoha's young ninja. The noren curtains fluttered gently in the evening breeze, and the delicious aroma of boiling broth and cooking meat spilled into the street, attracting hungry passersby.

"We're here!" Naruto announced enthusiastically, though he stopped by one of the high chairs. "Hinata-chan..."

Hinata blushed slightly, as if she had only just realized she had been carried the whole way.

"Oh, y-yes, of course," she stammered, though she moved carefully to slide off Naruto's back.

Naruto helped her settle into one of the seats, holding her arm until he was sure she was stable.

"Are you sure you're okay?" he asked once more, his blue eyes scanning her face for any sign of discomfort.

"I'm fine, Naruto-kun," Hinata assured him. "I just needed to rest a bit. The battle with Neji-niisan was... intense."

"I know! You were incredible!" Naruto exclaimed, his smile widening. "I can't believe how strong you've become!"

Hinata's face turned bright red and she looked down at her hands intertwined in her lap.

"T-thank you," she murmured so softly it was barely audible over the general noise of the street.

Teuchi, the owner of Ichiraku, poked his head from behind the counter with a look of surprise at the size of the group that had just arrived.

"Naruto! Welcome back!" he greeted with his kind, familiar voice. "I see you brought an army with you this time."

"Teuchi-jisan!" Naruto responded enthusiastically, taking a seat next to Hinata. "Yes! Everyone passed to the Chunin Exam finals! Well, almost everyone. It's a celebration!"

Teuchi chuckled, clearly amused by the group's dynamics.

"Well, I'm glad to see you all here. The usual orders?"

"Give me five bowls of miso ramen to start!" Naruto requested immediately, raising his hand with enthusiasm.

"Five?" Temari repeated, who had settled at the end of the group, her expression showing genuine incredulity. "To start?"

"Naruto-kun can eat much more than that," Hinata commented naturally, as if she were stating a fact as obvious as the sky being blue.

"Much more," Tenten confirmed, taking a seat next to Hinata. "I've seen days where he hits ten bowls without even looking full."

"Twelve," Sakura corrected, raising a finger. "My record for watching him eat is twelve bowls in one sitting."

"Fourteen!" Ino chimed in with a triumphant smile. "I thought he was going to explode."

"How is that physically possible?" Temari asked, looking at Naruto with horror. "Where does he put it all?"

Naruto laughed, scratching the back of his head with an embarrassed gesture.

"I have a very fast metabolism," he explained. "Besides, Teuchi-jisan's ramen is the best in the world! It's impossible to eat just one!"

"I'm flattered, Naruto," Teuchi said with a smile as he began to prepare the orders. "And the rest of you?"

The orders began to arrive. Hinata asked for a bowl of chicken ramen; Tenten, pork; Guy ordered two bowls of beef ramen with extra vegetables, and Temari, still somewhat doubtful, ordered a simple bowl of miso ramen.

"I want three bowls of pork ramen!" Sakura declared, her stomach growling in anticipation.

"Then I want four bowls of miso ramen!" Ino countered immediately.

Sakura turned her head so fast Tenten was surprised she didn't hurt her neck.

"Seriously?" Sakura asked, her green eyes narrowing. "Now we're going to compete over who can eat more?"

"Are you afraid of losing, Billboard Brow?" Ino challenged, crossing her arms with a defiant smile.

"Afraid? Not at all!" Sakura rose slightly from her seat. "Teuchi-san, change my order to five bowls!"

"Then I want six!"

"Seven!"

"Eight!"

Tenten watched the exchange with growing concern; her gaze eventually turned toward Naruto.

"Naruto," she began in a careful tone, "are you sure you can pay for all this? Because if Sakura and Ino keep this up, your wallet is going to suffer."

Naruto pulled his frog purse from his pocket, gave it an affectionate pat, and placed it on the counter.

"Don't worry, Tenten-chan! I said it was my treat and I mean it! Besides, I still have money from what Tsunade-baachan gave me!"

"You still have money?" Tenten commented, impressed. "I thought you would have spent it all... I mean, knowing your love for ramen."

"Hey! I know how to manage my money!" Naruto protested.

"Sure, that's why you live on instant noodles half the month," Ino whispered, though low enough that Naruto didn't hear her clearly.

As the group settled in and multiple conversations began to intertwine, Guy had installed himself on the bench next to Temari, who immediately felt as if a force of nature had sat beside her.

"It is wonderful to see young ninja celebrating their victories together!" Guy exclaimed, his eyes shining with enthusiasm. "This is the true spirit of youth! Camaraderie, friendship, mutual support!"

Temari blinked, trying to process the level of energy Guy radiated even while sitting down.

"Yes, I guess it's... nice," she replied, choosing her words carefully.

"Nice!" Guy repeated as if she had just said something profound. "It's more than nice! It's the very essence of what it means to be young! The passion, the determination, the will to improve alongside your comrades!"

"Uh-huh," Temari nodded slowly, beginning to understand why there were rumors that some Konoha ninja were "particularly intense."

"And you, young kunoichi of Suna!" Guy continued, turning fully toward her with a bright smile. "You have shown an admirable spirit by joining this group despite being from a different village! That shows true openness of heart!"

"I... thanks, I guess," Temari wasn't completely sure how to respond to such a level of enthusiasm.

Naruto, who had been paying partial attention to multiple conversations at once, turned in his seat to join the talk with Guy and Temari.

"Guy-sensei is right, Temari-chan!" he said with his characteristic wide smile. "It's great that you came with us! It means we're friends now!"

"Friends?" Temari repeated, raising an eyebrow. "I literally just met most of you today."

"And what does that matter?" Naruto asked, tilting his head in confusion. "Friendship isn't about how long you've known someone. It's about how they make you feel and if you can trust them."

Guy nodded vigorously, clearly approving of the sentiment.

"Wise words, Naruto! Truly wise!"

Temari watched Naruto for a long moment, her green eyes studying his open and honest expression. There was no trace of malice or hidden agenda in his words. He really believed what he was saying.

"You people in Konoha are strange," she finally commented. "But I guess it's a... tolerable kind of strange."

"I'll take that as a compliment!" Naruto declared, not offended in the slightest.

The first bowls of ramen began to arrive and the aroma of hot broth and perfectly cooked noodles filled the air around the group. Naruto took his chopsticks with reverence, joined his hands in a quick thanks, and then dove into devouring his first bowl with an enthusiasm that bordered on religious.

Hinata ate her ramen with small elegant bites, a tiny but constant smile on her lips as she watched Naruto out of the corner of her eye. Every time their gazes accidentally met, she blushed, but she didn't look away as quickly as she used to.

Tenten had started eating her own ramen when she noticed that Sakura and Ino had begun their unofficial speed-eating competition. Both kunoichi were practically inhaling their noodles, their chopsticks moving in a blur as they tried to outperform each other.

"Girls," Tenten started, her voice tinged with concern, "you're going to end up with a stomachache if you keep eating that fast."

"I'm... fine," Sakura gasped between bites, though her face was starting to turn a bit red from the effort.

"Me... too," Ino insisted, swallowing a particularly large mouthful of noodles that made her eyes water momentarily.

"Naruto," Tenten turned to the blonde, who had just finished his second bowl, "this is going to ruin your wallet. Are you sure that...?"

"Let them!" Naruto interrupted with a cheerful laugh. "If they want to eat, let them eat! Besides, it's fun watching them compete! It shows how much spirit they have!"

"Spirit isn't going to pay for the extra bowls," Tenten muttered, but there was a smile on her lips that contradicted her worried tone.

It was at that moment, just as Naruto was lifting his third bowl to start eating, that a familiar presence made itself felt behind the group.

"And where exactly is my invitation?"

Naruto almost dropped his bowl. He turned in his seat to find Tsunade standing behind him, her hands on her hips and an expression of mock indignation on her face. Beside her, Shizune watched the scene with an amused smile.

"Tsunade-baachan!" Naruto exclaimed, his blue eyes widening in surprise. "I... we... well...!"

"Well what?" Tsunade asked, raising an eyebrow. "Did you think you could celebrate without me? After everything I did today?"

Before Naruto could formulate a coherent response, Tsunade leaned forward and pinched his cheek hard enough to make him let out a groan of protest.

"Ouch! Baachan, that hurts!"

"Good, maybe that way you'll learn to invite your elders to celebrations," Tsunade replied.

With a quick movement, she reached out and took Naruto's frog purse from the counter where he had left it. She weighed it in her hand, shook it slightly near her ear to hear the sound of the coins and bills inside, and then nodded with satisfaction.

Tsunade could feel the weight of the money inside, more than she expected considering how long it had been since she gave it to him.

He really didn't spend it all in a week, she thought, genuinely impressed. Maybe the brat is learning some financial responsibility.

The thought of the money brought back memories of Tanzaku, of the gambling table where she had won that substantial sum she later shared with Naruto. A small part of her, the one that loved the thrill of the game, felt an almost overwhelming urge to go back and try her luck once more.

But then she remembered why she was here, why she had agreed to stay in Konoha.

Damn snake, she growled mentally. Ruining my plans to gamble it all again. And damn bets with orange idiots.

"Tsunade-sama," Shizune's voice interrupted her thoughts, "are you going to give him back his purse?"

Tsunade looked at the purse in her hand and then at Naruto, who was watching her nervously.

"Maybe," she finally answered, a touch of mischief in her voice. "Depending on whether you officially invite me to eat ramen."

"Of course you're invited, Tsunade-baachan!" Naruto said immediately, his nervousness evaporating. "You're always invited!"

"Good," Tsunade handed the purse back with a small smile. "Then I suppose I can forgive your lack of etiquette this time."

Shizune took a seat next to Tenten, who immediately moved to give her more space. Tsunade's assistant watched the group with kind eyes, clearly enjoying the lively atmosphere.

"I like this," Shizune commented in a low voice, more to herself than anyone else, though Tenten heard her.

"The ramen?" Tenten asked.

"The atmosphere," Shizune corrected, her smile widening. "It's refreshing after all the traveling Tsunade-sama and I have been doing."

Tsunade, who had taken a seat on the other side of Naruto, ordered her own bowl of ramen while partially listening to the multiple conversations happening around her.

Sakura and Ino had resumed their eating competition; they were already on their fourth bowl each, their faces showing absolute determination mixed with growing stomach discomfort.

Guy continued talking enthusiastically about the spirit of youth, now addressing Temari about the importance of persevering even when the odds were against her.

Naruto had started his fourth bowl, eating with the same gusto as the first, completely oblivious to how Hinata watched him with barely disguised affection.

It was completely disorganized.

And Tsunade surprised herself by realizing she had missed it.

"You know, Shizune," she said in a low voice, quiet enough that only her assistant could hear over the general noise, "I missed a bit of this calm."

Shizune looked at her in surprise; then she watched the chaotic group of young ninja eating, competing, laughing, and talking all at the same time.

"This is calm to you, Tsunade-sama?" she asked with incredulity.

"Compared to war and politics..." Tsunade took a sip of her sake, her eyes softening as she watched Naruto laugh at something Guy had just said, "yes. This is calm."

Shizune processed the words for a moment and then nodded with understanding.

"I see," she said simply, her own smile becoming warmer.

Meanwhile, the competition between Sakura and Ino had reached almost comical levels. Both were on their sixth bowl, and their movements had become notably slower and clumsier.

"I'm... going... to... win," Sakura gasped, forcing another mouthful of noodles into her mouth.

"In... your... dreams," Ino replied, though her face had taken on a worrying greenish tint.

Tenten finally had enough. She rose from her seat and positioned herself between the two competitors, hands held out in a stopping gesture.

"Enough," she declared firmly. "You're both going to get sick if you keep this up, and then Naruto is going to have to carry you back home too."

"I don't need to be carried!" Sakura protested, though her voice lacked its usual strength.

"Me neither!" Ino added, though she looked just as unconvincing.

"Look," Tenten pointed to their respective bowls, "you've both eaten the same amount. Six bowls each. How about we call it a draw and you stop torturing yourselves?"

Sakura and Ino looked at each other, sizing each other up with narrowed eyes.

"Draw," they finally agreed in unison, both slumping against the back of their seats with expressions of exhaustion.

"Good," Tenten nodded with approval before turning to Naruto. "And you, stop encouraging them next time."

"But I didn't do anything!" Naruto protested innocently.
