After reading the explanation of how memories were stored, the name clicked in my head.
"Like Sherlock Holmes' palace of the mind?"
I observed how the system explained how to create a palace of the mind to begin cataloging memories. I always found it very interesting how the character searched for information in his memory and solved cases; how he used it to assemble a mental map of the events that connected to Moriarty.
"Sure, I can try that, and I don't think it will hurt anyone."
I sit in the classic meditation position. I couldn't start all the work it would take to create this method of memorization lying in bed. I'm sure I would fall asleep lying there comfortably.
"Okay, first let's clear our minds."
I take a deep breath and let my mind go blank, which is quite difficult, as random thoughts always pop into my head, like a joke about Watson's elementary things, or a song.
"Focus, I need to focus."
I focus my mind on the sequence of my breathing, inhaling for a few seconds, one, two, three, four, holding my breath, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, exhaling only through my mouth, one, two, three, four, five, six. I maintain this sequence until my mind is empty and only the counting of my breath remains.
Once my mind has calmed down, I begin to picture my house, a typical two-story London house with red brick walls slightly darkened by air pollution, symmetrical windows with velvet curtains on the ground floor and shutters on the first-floor bedroom windows, a dark slate roof with a chimney on top, a few stone steps with a wrought iron railing, and a dark varnished oak door, almost black in the night light, matching the wrought iron lantern beside it.
After the facade of the house is ready, I feel as if I am walking through the entrance, my hands touching the railing, feeling the cold iron in contact with the skin of my hand, I firmly hold the doorknob that had the detail of a car steering wheel, a silly detail, last year I had broken the doorknob when I almost fell during the winter, after I slipped on the frozen floor of the entrance and leaned on the old one, putting all my weight on it and tearing it off the door. After that, I felt really bad, so I told my father about it. He laughed for hours and took me to a hardware store, and that day we bought this doorknob.
When I open the door, I force myself to concentrate again, and the entrance hall appears, with the old welcome mat, the small table at the entrance with a bonsai tree, the umbrella stand, the coat rack, some pictures on the wall, with photos of me when I was younger, and a picture of the whole family, me, my mother, my father, Uncle Larry, and his dog Romulus, and a hallway leading to the living room. When I try to continue, I feel a sense of weakness, as if I had slept very poorly and it was weighing heavily on me.
