Chapter 72 - Chapter 70

For a moment, no one spoke.

The only sounds were the ragged breathing of downed shinobi, the faint crackle of Raon's leftover lightning, and the quiet clink of a mug being set down a little too carefully somewhere near the back.

Ilea let the silence sit.

Hiruzen needed to see it. Really see it. Not as a tactical overview, not as some abstract 'mission went sideways' but as the direct result of his last order.

In Ilea's eyes, he was not completely unredeemable. Yes, he was quite indecisive when he was the Kage of the strongest village in the Ninja world, yes he cared more about his and his cronies' influence in Konoha rather than strengthening the village as a whole.

But, she felt if he tasted the consequences of his action, he would change. Well if not, she could have just marched into Konoha and put him into his grave herself.

"You lost." She'd said it once already. She let the words hang in the air a heartbeat longer. Then she followed them. "You don't get another try."

Hiruzen held her gaze. His eyes were clear. No panic. Just hard calculation and something older than that, tiredness buried under duty.

"You have made your point." He said at last. His voice was rough, but steady. "You are strong. This place is dangerous. Attacking your staff is… unwise." He inclined his head a fraction. "We will adjust."

The ash around Ilea's ankles stirred, amused.

He still thought this was a negotiation.

"It's cute you think that's all this is." She said, her hand left the embedded staff and jabbed a thumb toward the door the Leaf-nin had used earlier.

"Everyone who can still stand, stands." She ordered. "You pick up your wounded. You carry them back through that nice little door. You don't try anything on the way out. You don't look at the staff like they're bags of coins with legs."

Her thumb turned, angling back at Hiruzen.

"He stays."

She felt the flinch ripple through the room like another shockwave.

Jiraiya, still half-crouched with one hand on his ribs, snapped his eyes to her. Orochimaru's pupils thinned, interest flaring. Tsunade's chakra buzzed, angry and raw, like a hornet nest someone had just kicked.

Hiruzen's jaw tightened. "You expect Konoha to accept their Hokage as a hostage?"

"You expected us to accept them as hostages." Ilea said, nodding toward Vilera, Valerie, the other demons behind Cale's shield. "You tried it a few times. Only fair you find out how it feels from the other side."

"That is not the same." Hiruzen said, heat slipping into his tone. "Kushina is—"

"A person, not an asset." Ilea cut in. "The staff here are people, not bargaining chips. There's a lesson."

She took another step closer. Not enough to crowd. Enough to make sure he felt the heat bleeding off her ash.

"You're not a random soldier." She went on. "You're not some rogue. You're the one who walked in and decided 'hostage' was on the table. So you're the one who stays until the people who actually run this place get back and talk to you."

His eyes narrowed. "And if I refuse?"

Ilea shrugged. "Then I punch harder. Maybe I'll start with your legs this time."

It wasn't a threat shouted with killing intent. It was a simple statement of facts. Like one plus one equals two.

Tsunade forced herself upright, every line of her body screaming in protest. "We're not leaving him." She said. Voice low. Dangerous. "You think you can just keep the Hokage of the Leaf in some—"

"Tsunade."

Hiruzen didn't raise his voice.

She went quiet anyway.

He turned his head slightly, never fully looking away from Ilea. "Assess the situation." He said. "Not what you want it to be. What it is."

Her palms clenched, her eyes looked around like she was told.

Moments later, her jaws bit into each other.

Hiruzen looked back to Ilea. "You intend to keep me here until your… Claire and Ludwig return."

"Yes." Ilea said. "You're going to sit in a chair that probably isn't comfortable, drink tea that probably isn't up to whatever noble standard you used to, and think about better ways to say 'we want Kushina back' that don't include 'and also I brought an abduction squad.'"

He exhaled slowly through his nose.

"That will be interpreted as an act of war."

"Only if you call it one." Ilea said. "From this side, it's 'Hokage went somewhere dangerous, did something stupid, and now has to wait in the principal's office until a parent comes to pick him up.'"

Somewhere, a goblin snorted a shaky laugh. An orc choked it back down.

Jiraiya dragged himself up another inch. "Sensei." he said. "She's not wrong about… that. We try to take someone now, we get flattened. We pull back, we get to choose how we talk about this at home."

He glanced at Ilea. "And if he stays."

"You get him back in one piece." Ilea said. "After he's listened."

She let that sit, then added, "You go home and tell your people he's a guest under enforced hospitality. Or you lie and say he stayed to buy you time. Or you say he's negotiating with gods, I don't care. Spin it however you need. Point is: no more raids. You want Kushina, you talk to her. You want to accuse Ludwig and Claire of abduction? Talk with them without touching anyone else."

Hiruzen's gaze flicked one last time to each of his people.

To Tsunade, shaking with anger she had nowhere useful to put.

To Jiraiya, trying to hold his cracked side together with one hand.

To Orochimaru, whose interest had not dimmed but whose options had drastically narrowed.

To the ANBU, scattered and groaning.

To the civilians—because that's what they were in this context—still behind the shield, still looking at him with something between fear and contempt.

Then back to Ilea.

"You truly do not intend my death." He said. "Despite opportunity."

"Correct." Ilea said.

"Even knowing who I am. What I have done. What I may yet do." He pressed.

"I know enough." She said. "I also know killing you will just make a mess I don't want Ludwig's restaurant to get dragged into. Keeping you alive and listening? That actually solves problems."

He chuckled once, a dry, humorless sound. "Pragmatic."

"Trauma builds that." She said. "Trust me."

Another long breath.

"Very well." Hiruzen Sarutobi said. "Leaf shinobi withdraw. That is an order. Return to the village. Report that negotiations will be… ongoing."

Tsunade made a strangled sound. "Sensei—"

"That's an order." He repeated.

She swallowed. Hard.

Jiraiya pushed himself the rest of the way up and moved first, half-limping, half-dragging an ANBU with a bent leg. Orochimaru rose more smoothly, hauling one of Lee Han's victims up by the collar as if carrying an interesting specimen.

"Try not to break him too much." The snake said to Ilea with a thin smile. "He's very educational."

"Try not to send your students on kidnapping errands." She shot back.

Konoha's ninja formed a ragged line toward the door. No one turned their back fully on Ilea until they had to. Eyes slid away from Hiruzen and back again, as if they couldn't quite accept he wasn't moving with them.

At the threshold, Tsunade paused.

"You better keep him alive," she said, voice low and dangerous. "If he loses so much as a finger—"

"You wouldn't even know it." Ilea said. "I'm a healer too, you must've noticed."

A muscle jumped in Tsunade's jaw. She stepped through the door.

The bell chimed, small and absurd.

Then they were gone.

The ambient pressure in the room dropped like a stone. The ash around Ilea's boots settled, like a big cat finally deciding not to pounce.

"Right." She offered a calm voice, the Hokage's staff in her hand cutting through the air. "Show's over. If you're bleeding, come to me. If your table's broken, complain to Valerie later. If you're thinking about starting your own hostage policy, don't."

A few strained chuckles answered her.

Her attention went back to Hiruzen.

Without his staff, without his cloak billowing dramatically, he looked smaller. Not weak per say. Just human. A man whose day had gone very far off-script.

"Come on," Ilea said, jerking her head toward a reasonably intact corner table. "You don't get to loom in the middle of the room anymore. That privilege has been revoked."

He regarded her for a second longer, then stepped where she indicated. No ANBU flanking him. No Sannin at his sides. Just one tired old Kage walking under his own power across a scarred floor.

He sat when she gestured at the chair.

It creaked but held.

She didn't sit opposite. She leaned on the next table over, arms folded, ash a faint halo around her boots again instead of armor.

"For now consider yourself… detained. Not with chains. With consequences."

"An unusual prison." Hiruzen mused.

"Welcome to a restaurant that touches multiple worlds." Ilea said. "Ruins your usual definitions pretty fast."

She glanced over her shoulder.

"Hey!" she called toward the Tempest side.

One of the orcs—broad-shouldered, better dressed than most, nerves finally unclenching—straightened. "Y-yes, ma'am?"

"Send a runner back to Tempest. Go find Rimuru or Ludwig or Claire and send a message." Ilea said.

She then jerked her thumb at Hiruzen. "Tell him: 'Your favorite problem-maker brought you a guest. Hokage, one piece, slightly bruised. Come home.'"

The orc blinked.

"Repeat it." Ilea prompted.

"'Your favorite… problem-maker brought you a guest. Hokage, one piece, slightly bruised. Come home.'" He recited, brow furrowing.

"Perfect." Ilea said. "Make sure it gets through. And tell whoever you pass it to that if they edit my wording, I'll know."

He swallowed. "Right away."

As the orc talked with a goblin and the little green monster hustled toward the door that led deeper into Tempest's side of things, Ilea let herself sag a little more against the table.

Politics.

She still hated it.

But if it ended with the people of the only restaurant where she could get a beer and a cola safe, Konoha's worst instincts checked, and Ludwig as well as Claire dragged back here to help clean up this mess?

She'd suffer through it anytime.
