Chapter 182 - Chapter 182: Stuck In The Mud, Fighting Bandits

"Get those bastards!"

The roar echoed across the desolate, rain-soaked plain. "Leave no one alive! Take the cargo and butcher the rest!" another voice shrieked, followed by the jagged, unified battle cry of the Pink Hawk Bandits. They swarmed down the muddy slope like a wave of rusted iron and blood-stained leather, their weapons raised as they closed in on the tilted caravan.

The battle erupted instantly.

Fallon didn't wait for them to reach her. Taking advantage of a brief second of leverage where her boots weren't completely swallowed by the mire, she gripped the heavy iron rim of her tower shield, and with a burst of raw muscular strength, she vaulted forward, using the momentum to drive her shoulder and the heavy metal plate straight into the chest of the leading bandit.

"SHIELD BASH"

The impact sounded like wood snapping. The bandit flew backward through the air like a ragdoll, skipping across the waterlogged mud for a dozen meters before coming to a dead stop.

The surrounding bandits skidded to a halt, their eyes going wide with pure terror.

"Stay back! Stay away!" one of them stammered, pointing a shaking sword at her. "This lady is an absolute monster—!"

Fallon tried to take a step forward to press her advantage, but the ground betrayed her. The thick, suctioning mud wrapped around her boots like iron bands. She forced her right foot up, planting it down, but when she tried to lift her left, it refused to budge. She took two agonizing steps before the mud locked her in place completely.

A few bandits nearby noticed her predicament and burst into mocking laughter. "Look at her! She's stuck! The heavy tin can can't even move!"

One of them stepped closer, raising his sword with a smug, mocking grin, eager to taunt a warrior he thought couldn't reach him.

Fallon didn't panic. Her face hardened into a mask of pure, unyielding focus. Without a word of warning, she tightened her grip on her heavy shield, spun her entire body and whipped the heavy iron edge sideways.

The rim caught the taunting bandit squarely in the ribs. He let out a sharp, compressed wheeze as he went airborne, joining his comrade in the mud fifty feet away.

The remaining bandits backed up a few paces, treating her with sudden, extreme caution. Realizing she was entirely anchored by the mud, one of the leaders shouted over the rain, "Ignore the eye-patched lady! Just loot the caravan and slaughter the brats inside!"

They redirected their charge toward the tilted wagon. But as soon as the front-runners closed within striking distance.

Onyx jumped from the roof. He didn't use the point of his weapon; instead, he spun the dark lance around and brought the heavy flat side crashing down against the nearest bandit's head. The man's eyes rolled into the back of his head, and he dropped face-first into the sludge before he even hit the ground.

The moment his boots touched the thick, watery mud, the ghoul's stoic expression completely vanished. His legs began thrashing wildly in absolut panic as he sank an inch into the muck. Desperate to escape the vile substance, he dissolved into a shadow, through the mud and reappearing safely inside Theo's shadow on the roof of the caravan.

Theo looked down at his own shadow, blinking as Onyx materialized, shivering slightly. Theo couldn't help a dry smirk. "Man... you really hate mud, don't you?"

Onyx crossed his arms, refusing to make eye contact.

"Come on, boys! From all sides! Don't let them breathe!"

The bandits swarmed the wagon, entirely surrounding it like wolves closing in on a wounded deer. While Onyx scrambled to cover the rear exit, several bandits managed to claw their way up the wooden sides, hoisting themselves onto the tilted roof.

Waiting for them was Theo.

"Alright, time to clear the deck," Theo muttered, a crooked grin spreading across his face as he dropped into a stylish, low combat stance.

A blinding, brilliant radiance flared from his palm as his signature skill activated. Theo shouted the name of his newly acquired power "Blade of Light", as it materialized in his hand, humming with energy.

Theo moved like lightning across the wooden crates and the slanted roof. He leaped between the barrels, slicing and hacking with precision. Every swing of his glowing blade left trails of light in the air, parrying steel and knocking bandits backward off the roof with swift kicks before they could even steady their footing.

While Theo held the roof, Three bandits forced their way inside, lunging straight toward Kairo and Claymond.

One bandit snarled, raising a rusty shortsword and thrusting it directly toward Kairo's chest.

Before Kairo could even lift a finger, a streak of dark shadow dropped from above. Onyx's lance flashed in the confined space, a clean horizontal sweep that caught the bandit's wrist.

The man's hand, still clutching the sword, severed cleanly and dropped to the floor. The bandit stared at his bleeding stump for a split second before unleashing a blood-curdling scream of agony.

Beside Kairo, Claymond sidestepped a wild overhead swing from another intruder. Moving with calm efficiency, Claymond caught the man's momentum, swept his leg behind the bandit's knee, and slammed him face-first into the wooden floorboards with a devastatingly efficient takedown.

Kairo blinked, looking at the older lord. "Nice one, Claymond."

Claymond rubbed the back of his neck, a faint, sheepish flush crossing his weathered face beneath the rain. "Ah... well... I've been practicing a bit on the side."

"Ooh, let me get in on some of this fun!" Varen shouted from the back of the cabin, cracking his knuckles.

Varen rummaged through one of the open crates filled with Leon's salvaged junk, bypassed the torture tools, and pulled out a heavy, rusted iron flail. He spun the chain once, stepped out of the cabin door, and brought the spiked metal ball squarely down on the crown of a climbing bandit's head. The man's eyes went wide, and he collapsed instantly into a dead faint.

Another bandit rushed up behind Varen with a raised cudgel. Varen ducked low at the exact right moment, letting the swing whistle over his hair, and drove his heel straight backward into the attacker's stomach. The bandit doubled over, gasping for breath, before Varen casually elbowed him over the edge into the mud pit below.

A few yards away, Fallon was fighting a war of sheer attrition against the earth itself.

She was slowly, painfully making her way toward the caravan. She would plant her heavy iron boot, put all her weight into pulling it out of the sucking suction, take a single step forward, and immediately watch her foot sink back down into the muck.

She had to hold her massive tower shield hoisted high above her head with both arms just so the bottom edge wouldn't catch the mud and trip her up.

Water dripped from her nose, mixing with thick beads of sweat running down her temples. She was panting, her muscles burning from the strain.

(All the fun... is so close... yet so... far...) she thought frantically, watching the chaos unfold at the wagon.

She grit her teeth, shoving her legs forward again, refusing to stop. (Wait for me... I'm supposed to be by your side... fighting! Young master!)

Inside the rattling cabin, Kairo gripped the wooden window frame as the entire wagon shuddered violently under the collective weight of the attackers. The structural beams groaned, threatening to snap.

"Stop!" Kairo shouted, looking around as the walls warped under the pressure. "The walls can't hold much longer! Theo, kick them off the roof! Varen, clear the sides!"

"Got it!" Theo yelled back.

With a burst of acceleration, Theo cleared the remaining bandits off the roof, but in the heat of the moment, he didn't stop there—he leaped off the side of the wagon entirely, landing in the mud to hack his way through the ground forces.

Kairo's eyes widened in panic. "Hey! I didn't say you could hop off the wagon, you idiot!"

Realizing they couldn't break the defense through close-quarters combat, the bandit leader snarled, backing away from the melee.

"Playtime's over, you little rats! Shoot 'em down!"

At his command, a dozen bandits scattered backward, drawing heavy crossbows from their backs. They formed a ragged firing line in the higher mud, taking careful aim at the trapped caravan.

The bandit leader grinned wickedly, pointing his blade right at the wagon. "Get ready, brats! You're gonna be filled with more holes than a block of cheese in no time!"

Outside, Fallon gasped, her eyes widening as she saw the crossbows rise. With a desperate grunt, she slammed her tower shield down into the mud in front of her, crouching behind its metal plating just in time.

At the front of the caravan, Onyx leaped forward, expanding his shadow essence into a dense, shimmering barrier to deflect the incoming bolts.

Inside the cabin, Theo looked back, his face pale as he pressed his back against the splintered wood. "Kairo! What now?!"

Kairo stood frozen for a split second, his eyes darting frantically across the battlefield. He looked at the giant silver-furred spiders pulling the wagon—their long, powerful legs were completely immobilized by the thick mud. If a volley of heavy crossbow fire hit them, the beasts would die, along with all of them inside the caravan.

(If only there wasn't so much mud here...) Kairo thought, his heart hammering against his ribs. (If we just had a little leverage—just a way to clear this ground—)

Suddenly, the ambient noise of the rain and the shouting faded away.

The air grew ice-cold. The shadows beneath the caravan stretched and curled like living serpents.

And then, whispering directly inside the damp corridors of his mind, came that familiar, cosmic, skin-crawling voice—dripping with amusement and ancient malice. And somewhere in between all of that, kairo's eyes slowly start loosing their blue colour, and become dull, but another colour starts rising.

Kairo flinched, his breath catching in his throat as the entity spoke its single, chilling question:

"Want some help, kid?"
