Chapter 3 - Chapter 7: The Calm Before the Trials

Chapter 7: The Calm Before the Trials (continued)

The Academy plaza blazed once more with light as the giant holoscreen descended. The students who had been resting in their domes were summoned back. No one expected it this early.

The examiner's voice thundered across the grounds, amplified by both speakers and psychic resonance:

"Aurora Academy does not waste time. The Trials begin now. Squad allocations will determine not only your rank—but your future."

The air vibrated. Holograms unfolded, forming names, faces, and faction insignias.

The Reveal

Redmond's name glowed first.

[Squad 07: Redmond Luxifel Red'Lux,Magnus Nox D'ark, Kael Veyra, Selene Caith, Tiran Valen]

The crowd exploded in whispers.

"Wait—they paired the Red'Lux and the D'ark?!"

"Those families… they've never fought side by side!"

"And Kael too? That lunatic from the Tailborn elite?!"

"This is suicide—or genius."

Magnus clenched his jaw, visor reflecting the light of Redmond's name beside his own.

"So it begins."

The First Trial

The plaza shook. A massive platform rose from beneath the Academy grounds, its surface shimmering like liquid steel. At its edges, dimensional cracks hissed open, spilling distorted creatures—half rift-beast, half simulation construct.

The examiner raised his hand.

"Trial One: Squad Ordeal. Survive and eliminate. The evaluation begins now."

The platform locked all squads in place, each separated by barriers of shimmering energy. Redmond's squad stood together, tension radiating.

Dialogue: Squad 07

Kael, the Tailborn, lashed his tail against the ground, a grin splitting his face.

"Ha! Finally, something worth hitting."

Selene Caith, a quiet Grayscale girl with obsidian eyes, murmured,

"Recklessness won't keep us alive. These constructs adapt."

Tiran Valen adjusted the metallic gauntlets strapped to his arms, energy circuits flaring.

"Then let's test who adapts faster."

Magnus finally spoke, his tone like steel.

"Don't forget the Academy's purpose—this is less about killing beasts and more about exposing us. Watch how they study us."

His visor flickered, recording every ripple of energy on the field.

And then—all eyes turned to Redmond.

He didn't hesitate. His vermilion energy flared subtly, reshaping around his body like a living aura.

"We fight smart. Kael—front. Selene, density field on the left flank. Tiran—support fire, alternating intervals. Magnus…"

He paused, his pale hair glinting under the artificial auroras.

"…cover me. You'll know when."

Magnus's lips twitched. Not quite a smile, not quite disdain.

"Hmph. Ordering me around already? Don't disappoint me, Red'Lux."

The Clash

The first wave of constructs screamed as they poured across the field. Metallic limbs twisted with rift-born corruption, eyes glowing with hunger.

Kael charged, tail snapping like a whip, shattering the skull of the first beast with brutal force. Selene's density field bent the ground itself, slowing the creatures' advance as if gravity itself had thickened.

Tiran's gauntlets roared, hurling bolts of compressed plasma that detonated in precise arcs.

Magnus's visor glowed as panels of summoned tech unfolded around him—bladed drones, shifting cannons, and protective barriers.

And at the center, Redmond stepped forward.

The vermilion aura pulsed, and in his hands, light itself twisted into a spear. He hurled it—

The projectile split into six beams mid-flight, tearing through constructs like paper.

Gasps echoed from the crowd of watching students.

"That… isn't elemental. It's rewriting photons into solid mass…"

"Psychic shaping? No—it's beyond that."

Magnus's eyes narrowed.

"So this is the so-called Light Manifestation. A lie wrapped in brilliance… but dangerous."

The Rivalry Ignites

The beasts adapted quickly. New forms crawled from the rifts, larger and harder, glowing with crimson veins.

Magnus snapped his fingers, and a swarm of tech-born blades spiraled forward, cutting them apart.

"Don't think you're the only one with spectacle, Red'Lux."

Redmond's vermilion light clashed against Magnus's black-drone storm, the battlefield briefly illuminated by their rivalry. For a heartbeat, it wasn't about the beasts at all—it was about who would break first.

The examiner's lips curled into the faintest smile.

"Perfect. Just as planned."

The auroras of Aurelius shimmered high above, painting the sky in hues of violet and gold. Their beauty was wasted here, for inside the trial dome chaos had erupted.

What was supposed to be a measured test of coordination had shattered into a battlefield of survival. Constructs—mock enemies crafted by the academy—were changing, evolving mid-battle. They no longer fought like machines. They hunted.

The ground shook under their relentless advance, and the roar of combat echoed across the dome.

"Squad 07—engage!" barked the lead examiner, his tone clipped, but his eyes gleamed with a rare excitement. This wasn't just an exam anymore. This was history being written.

Kael was the first to move. His fists glowed, red arcs of kinetic energy wrapping around his arms. With a snarl, he slammed into the nearest construct, his punch collapsing its chest into molten shards.

But before his war cry could even rise, the shards quivered. Metal reassembled with eerie precision, the construct reforming as if mocking him.

"What kind of sick joke is this?!" Kael shouted, backpedaling.

Selene lifted both arms, her density field rippling outward in waves of crushing force. Dozens of constructs froze in midair, crushed into implosions under her invisible grip. She exhaled, sweat dripping from her temples.

"They're… heavier. My control—something's resisting it."

Plasma fire cracked the air. Tiran's gauntlets roared, lances of blue slicing through enemies with surgical precision. The ozone stench thickened, but still the constructs pressed on.

His visor flickered warnings. "Negative suppression detected. They're not resisting randomly. They're adapting to us."

From above, Magnus's drones cut the air like predators, blades slicing with impeccable precision. His crimson visor ran endless lines of probability data. Cold, efficient, calculating—yet his focus wasn't just on the battlefield. It lingered on one person.

Redmond Red'Lux.

At the squad's heart, his aura blazed vermilion, wrapping him in a shimmering halo that shifted like liquid flame. His short white hair gleamed against the aurora light, his very presence bending the arena's attention toward him.

With a flick, his aura solidified into a blade, cleaving through a construct in one motion. With a wave, it became a shield, absorbing blows meant for his comrades. Then, in the next instant, a spear of pure vermilion shot forward, dissolving an enemy's core on impact.

He moved like the battlefield itself was an extension of his body.

The crowd gasped, their voices rippling like waves across the dome.

"Is that—?"

"Red'Lux… that's the Red'Lux heir!"

"But his origin talent was never revealed…"

"That isn't shadow—what is that power?"

Students from other squads faltered mid-fight just to glance his way. Rivalry, awe, envy—every gaze fell on him.

Magnus's voice rang sharp, his tone edged with disdain. "So this is your performance, Red'Lux? Conceal your hand until the perfect stage… then blind the world with spectacle."

Redmond's answer was calm, his vermilion aura flaring subtly. "My light doesn't need spectacle, Magnus. Unlike your drones… it breathes."

The visor across Magnus's face pulsed dangerously. His drones tightened their orbit—not to protect, but to measure. To dissect.

Before tension could spark further, Kael slammed a kinetic punch into the floor, forcing both to look his way. "Enough pissing contests! Look around—these things aren't slowing down!"

As if on cue, the constructs shifted. Their crimson cores pulsed brighter, matching the rhythm of Redmond's aura. Their limbs reshaped into spears, shields, even crude blades of light—imitations of his power.

Selene stumbled back, eyes wide. "They're copying us. Not just adapting—they're replicating!"

Magnus's visor screamed warnings. "Replication confirmed. Primary source—Redmond Red'Lux."

Kael froze. "You're not saying—"

Magnus's tone cut sharp. "Eliminate the catalyst, survival probability rises to sixty-two percent."

The crowd gasped, voices erupting into murmurs of betrayal and fear.

Redmond's aura surged, exploding outward in a tide of vermilion. The air warped, the floor cracked beneath the weight of his presence.

"ENOUGH!"

Above him, light condensed into a massive sphere, pulsing like a miniature sun. The constructs froze mid-stride, their systems seizing under the weight of something far greater than their code.

The crowd's roar shook the dome.

"Is that a domain?!"

"Impossible—domains manifest only in advanced awakenings!"

"Then what is this child?"

The examiner's eyes gleamed, his composure cracking. "…he was hiding this all along."

Magnus clenched his fist, his visor flickering uncontrollably. "That… isn't just talent. That's something beyond."

The Silence After the Storm

Then, just as suddenly, the sphere shattered into motes of fading light. The constructs dropped motionless to the ground, their crimson cores extinguished.

The battlefield fell into eerie silence.

Thousands of eyes stayed fixed on Redmond, their awe, fear, and uncertainty blending into a single truth: this exam had revealed more than anyone expected.

The examiner finally raised his hand, his voice steady but weighted. "End of simulation. Squad 07—stand down."

The crowd erupted again, torn between cheers, disbelief, and whispers of conspiracy.

But at the center, Redmond stood still, his aura dimmed, his gaze unreadable. He knew what they didn't—that this wasn't the end of anything.

It was only the beginning.
