Chapter 48 - I "Borrowed" That

The Unicorn rumbled through the labyrinth of sewer pipes, its tires splashing against runoff water as the echo of the engine bounced off the walls. Pamela sat with her arms folded, watching the endless concrete twists until Barbara finally slowed to a stop before what looked like nothing more than a blank wall.

Barbara tilted her head toward her. "Normally I'd need a remote control to open this up. But now that I've got my nanites… watch this."

Her eyes narrowed, and a faint pulse of energy rippled invisibly through the air. The wall shuddered, mechanisms grinding deep inside the concrete as the flat surface split apart. The heavy slab shifted just enough for the Unicorn to roll through. Once they cleared the passage, the wall slid back into place, seamless again.

Pamela turned in her seat, eyes wide. "Oh my God, Barbara, you nailed this place! How long did you search for it?"

Barbara smirked faintly as she guided the car forward. "Funny thing—someone once told me about a hidden lair in the sewers, something even Batman could never find. I dug into old government archives, hacked military plans, and eventually traced it. Turns out it's an abandoned military depot from the 1910s. I've been converting it slowly over the last few years. That fake sewer wall? One of my most recent upgrades."

The car climbed a short ramp, tires humming against metal plating until they emerged into a cavernous chamber. Pamela stepped out and blinked at the sight—industrial lights buzzed overhead, illuminating rows of heavy equipment: blowtorches, jacks, welding rigs, tool cabinets, and a vehicle lift. A thick carpeted creeper mat lay on the floor beside it. Along one wall, racks of high-end computers and monitors flickered softly.

Pamela raised her brows. "Did you steal all this stuff?"

Barbara tugged her gloves tighter. "Yeah. Every time my dad 'rescued' me from criminals, I helped myself to their abandoned gear. Most of it was written off as lost, stolen, or damaged. The businesses got insurance payouts, so nobody cared. I had to scavenge to build this. I'm not rich like Batman. Piece by piece, I made my own setup."

Pamela crossed her arms, shaking her head with disbelief and admiration. "You girl… are a genius."

Barbara walked over, placed her hands on Pamela's shoulders, and pressed a kiss to her lips. "Thanks for the compliment, sweetie."

Then she turned, pulling on a thick leather apron and strapping a welding helmet over her head. She grabbed the blowtorch from its stand. The hiss of ignition filled the room, and a bright flame roared to life, bathing the Unicorn's battered hood in blue-white light.

"Time to modify the Unicorn," Barbara said from behind the mask.

Pamela stepped back, shading her eyes with one hand. "I'll leave you to it, dear. I'm going to look around. This place could use some plant life."

The torch spat sparks as Barbara angled it down against the car's frame. "What? Can't hear you—but go ahead, take a look around. I'll handle things here."

Pamela smiled softly. "Okay, dear. I'm off."
