Chapter 27 - Chapter 28: The Shadow

The bliss of their new normal was so potent, so all-consuming, that the outside world had begun to feel like a distant dream. Which was why the email felt like a bucket of ice water.

It was late. Marcus was in his home office on a conference call with Hong Kong. Lily was curled up on the sofa, reviewing vendor contracts for the renewal ceremony on her tablet.

A notification popped up. An unknown sender. The subject line was a single, chilling word: Congratulations?

A cold knot tightened in her stomach. She clicked it open.

The message was brief.

A lovely sentiment, this vow renewal. A beautiful performance for the public. I do hope the prenuptial agreement for this real marriage is as ironclad as the last one. Some of us remember how this all began. Some of us are still watching.

There was no signature.

Lily's blood ran cold. Some of us are still watching. The words echoed in the silent room, sucking all the air out of it. The warmth, the safety, and the joy of the past few days vanished, replaced by the old, familiar paranoia.

This wasn't from a random troll. The mention of the pre-nup and the phrasing "how this all began"—this was someone who knew. Someone from the inside.

Was it a disgruntled board member who had sided with Evelyn? A bitter employee who had been let go after the takeover attempt? The possibilities spun in her head, each one more terrifying than the last.

She heard Marcus's office door open down the hall. His footsteps approached. She quickly closed the email and opened a random catering website, her heart hammering against her ribs. She pasted a smile on her face, but it felt brittle and thin.

He walked in, loosening his tie, a look of tired satisfaction on his face. "Finally finished. What are you looking at? Canapés?" He came around the sofa and bent to kiss her temple.

She flinched.

He froze, pulling back. His eyes, sharp and perceptive, scanned her face. "Lily? What's wrong?"

She wanted to hide it. To protect this beautiful bubble they were in. But they had promised each other no more secrets. No more hiding.

"I… got an email," she said, her voice barely a whisper.

He sat down beside her, his entire body alert. "What email?"

Wordlessly, she handed him the tablet, the damning message open on the screen.

She watched his face as he read it. She saw the muscles in his jaw clench, the warmth in his gray eyes hardening into flint. The tired CEO was gone, replaced by the predator who had just defeated a hostile takeover. A deep, terrifying calm settled over him.

He read it once. Then twice. He placed the tablet carefully on the coffee table.

"Okay," he said, his voice dangerously quiet.

"Okay?" Lily repeated, her own fear spiking. "Marcus, someone knows! They're threatening us!"

He turned to her, taking both of her cold hands in his warm, steady ones. "Listen to me. This is not a threat. This is the desperate gasp of someone who has already lost. They see our happiness, they see us moving on, and it enrages them because they have nothing."

"But they could go public—"

"Let them," he interrupted, his voice firm. "The story of how I married a brilliant, beautiful woman to secure my company and was lucky enough to fall in love with her? It's a better story than the one we've been telling. The world will eat it up. It changes nothing for us, Lily. Nothing."

He cupped her face, forcing her to see the absolute conviction in his eyes. "This changes nothing. Do you understand me? We are real. This is real. And I will not let the ghost of my past mistakes haunt our future."

He pulled out his phone and typed a quick, decisive text. Probably to Charles, or to his head of security.

"We will find out who sent this," he promised, his thumb stroking her cheek. "But until we do, we will not give them a single second of our fear. They don't get to have that power."

He leaned forward and kissed her, not with tenderness, but with a fierce, possessive promise. It was a kiss that swore protection. It was a kiss that vowed war on anyone who threatened their peace.

The shadow had fallen, but he was already standing between it and her, ready to fight for their hard-won light.
