Chapter 20 - Chapter 20 – The Masquerade of Humanity

The return to Tempest was brief, a mere punctuation mark in a sentence that was rapidly becoming a paragraph of history. The city was no longer the collection of tents and desperation it had been mere months ago. It was a fortress of stone and timber, humming with the industrial rhythm of the Dwarves and the vibrant life of the Goblins. The roads were paved. The plumbing—a personal requirement of Rimuru's—was functional. It was a civilization rising from the mud, defying the logic of a world that believed monsters were incapable of order.

But they were leaving it behind.

At the main gate, the executive council gathered. Benimaru, looking every inch the Samurai General; Shuna, the grace of the city personified; Souei, a shadow even in daylight; Shion, weeping dramatically while hugging a tree because Rimuru had forbidden her from coming; and Hakurou, stroking his beard with knowing calm.

Rimuru stood before them, adjusted the collar of her traveler's coat. In her human form, she looked delicate—a silver-haired girl on the cusp of adulthood—but her aura held the weight of the treaties she had just forged.

"Listen up," Rimuru said, her voice clear. "I'm leaving the city in your hands. We're going to Ingrassia to fulfill Shizu-san's regret. It might take a few months. In that time, do not start wars. Do not provoke Demon Lords. And Shion, do not cook for the diplomats."

Shion wailed louder.

Nova stood a few paces back, checking the spatial coordinates one last time. He wore a new outfit, tailored by Shuna specifically for this journey: a high-collared charcoal suit beneath his signature black coat, giving him the appearance of a stern, aristocratic scholar.

Ciel. Review the defense protocols.

Excellent.

Nova stepped forward. The executives straightened instantly. To them, Rimuru was their beloved liege, but Nova was the natural law that kept the sky from falling.

"Benimaru," Nova said.

"Yes, Nova-dono!"

"You are the Commander General. Do not hesitate. If an enemy crosses the line with intent to kill, you do not wait for Rimuru's permission. You execute."

Benimaru's crimson eyes flashed. "Understood."

"Rigurd," Nova continued, turning to the Goblin King. "Continue the trade routes. Keep the appearance of prosperity. Make the humans envious. Envy makes them stupid."

"It shall be done!" Rigurd bowed deeply.

Nova turned to Rimuru. "Are you done with the emotional farewells? The road is long, and spatial travel is nauseating if you linger."

Rimuru wiped a small tear from her eye and nodded. "Yeah. I'm ready."

She turned to Ranga, who was hiding in her shadow. "You stay too, Ranga. Guard the town."

"Master! My heart breaks!" Ranga howled from the shadow dimension.

"Go," Nova ordered.

With a final wave, Rimuru turned, and the two of them began the walk away from the city they built. They did not look back. To look back was to invite hesitation, and where they were going, hesitation was fatal.

The Kingdom of Ingrassia

To reach the human capital required crossing borders, navigating checkpoints, and enduring the endless, tedious bureaucracy of humanity. Nova, naturally, bypassed all of it.

Using a combination of [Spatial Manipulation] and [Shadow Step], they compressed a three-week journey into three days of leisurely travel, arriving at the outskirts of the Kingdom of Ingrassia just as the sun began to set on the third day.

The capital was massive. Unlike Dwargon, which was a marvel of subterranean engineering, or Tempest, which was rustic and functional, Ingrassia was a sprawling metropolis of white stone and glass. It was the heart of human culture, the seat of the Free Guild, and the center of the Western Nations' economy.

It smelled of unwashed bodies, expensive perfume, and coal smoke.

Rimuru stood on a hill overlooking the massive walls, her golden eyes wide. "Whoa. It's… huge. It looks almost like a city from my old world."

"It mimics the architecture of Earth because Earthlings built it," Nova said, standing beside her. "Otherworlders have influenced this kingdom for centuries. You will find pasta, glass windows, and perhaps even democracy, though likely corrupt."

Rimuru pulled the anti-magic mask Shizu had left her over her face. It suppressed her monster aura completely, leaving her looking like a mysterious, petite adventurer.

"Okay," Rimuru muffled from behind the mask. "Rule number one: We're humans. Just two normal humans. No slime skills. No god-powers. Low profile."

Nova adjusted his gloves. "I am capable of subtlety."

"Nova, you stopped a Demon Lord's punch with one hand last week."

"That was last week."

They entered the city through the main gate. The guards, bored and overworked, barely glanced at the identification papers Nova had forged using [Material Creation].

Name: Satoru.

Role: Adventurer/Scholar.

Name: Nova.

Role: Bodyguard/assistant.

"Assistant?!" Nova raised an eyebrow at the papers as they walked through the bustling market district.

"It explains why you're looming over me," Rimuru whispered, navigating the crowd. "Plus, Satoru was my old name. It feels… right."

The city was a sensory overload. Merchants shouted wares, carriages clattered over cobblestones, and the sheer density of humanity was suffocating. Rimuru shrank slightly, unaccustomed to being surrounded by so many people who would kill her if they knew what she was.

Nova placed a hand on her shoulder. The touch was light, but it grounded her.

"Do not cower," he murmured, his voice cutting through the noise. "You are a catastrophic threat walking among sheep. If you act like prey, they will bite. Walk like you own the pavement."

Rimuru straightened. "Right. Confidence."

They made their way to the massive, fortress-like building in the center of the city. The Headquarters of the Free Guild.

This was where the Grandmaster lived.

This was where Yuuki Kagurazaka waited.

The Grandmaster's Office

The glass elevator—a marvel of magic and engineering—rose smoothly toward the top floor. Rimuru pressed her face against the glass, watching the city shrink below.

"This tech is incredible," she marveled. "I didn't think this world was this advanced."

"Magic substitutes for electricity," Nova observed. "Inefficient, but functional."

The doors slid open, revealing a reception area staffed by efficient-looking secretaries.

"We are here to see Grandmaster Yuuki," Rimuru stated, trying to sound authoritative. "I have a letter of introduction."

She produced Shizu's mask.

The secretary's eyes widened. She recognized the artifact. "Please… wait one moment."

Minutes later, they were ushered into the inner sanctum.

The office was spacious, lined with bookshelves filled not with grimoires, but with manga. Stacks of them. Behind a large mahogany desk sat a young man with black hair and a friendly, unassuming smile. He looked nothing like the ruler of the world's adventurers. He looked like a high school student working a summer job.

Yuuki Kagurazaka.

"Hello!" Yuuki stood up, beaming. "I heard you have Shizu-sensei's mask. That means… she's gone, isn't she?"

The smile didn't falter, but his eyes dimmed slightly. It was a perfect performance.

Rimuru nodded slowly, removing the mask. She revealed her human face—Shizu's face, but younger, softer.

Yuuki gasped. "That face…"

"I ate her," Rimuru said bluntly. "To save her soul. I'm a slime. My name is Rimuru Tempest."

Silence filled the room. This was the gamble. Revealing her nature in the heart of the enemy's stronghold.

Yuuki stared for a long moment, then slumped back into his chair, covering his eyes. "I see. So that's how it is. You fulfilled her wish."

He looked up, his expression tragic and grateful. "Thank you. She was suffering for a long time."

Nova stood by the door, leaning against the wall. He watched Yuuki with the predatory focus of a hawk circling a field mouse.

Ciel. Analysis.

Of course he is. He's the villain of the piece. Or he thinks he is.

"And who is this?" Yuuki asked, gesturing to Nova. "He doesn't talk much."

"This is Nova," Rimuru introduced. "My… advisor."

Yuuki smiled at Nova. It was the smile of a shark recognizing another shark. "Advisor, huh? You have a scary aura, Mr. Nova. Like you've seen a lot of death."

"I have seen enough to recognize a mask when I see one," Nova said evenly.

The air in the room froze.

Yuuki's smile didn't drop, but it became rigid. "Mask? Ah, you mean Shizu-sensei's mask?"

"If you prefer," Nova replied.

Rimuru, sensing the sudden spike in tension, quickly pulled out a stack of paper from her [Stomach].

"Anyway! I brought a gift! Being from Japan, I thought you might miss this!"

She slammed a recreated volume of Weekly Shonen Jump onto the desk.

Yuuki's eyes bulged. The facade cracked—this time genuinely.

"Is this… is this the arc where the hunter exam finishes?! I've been waiting ten years for this!"

He grabbed the manga, treating it like a holy relic. "You… you can replicate paper? Ink? This is amazing! Rimuru-san, you are a god!"

"I know, right?" Rimuru grinned, relieved.

As Yuuki fawned over the manga, Nova watched him. It was pathetic, in a way. The mastermind who wanted to destroy the world was pacified by cartoons. But it was also humanizing.

"So," Yuuki said, putting the manga away with great care. "You came here for a reason. Shizu-sensei's regrets?"

"The kids," Rimuru said, her voice serious. "The summoned children. She wanted to save them."

Yuuki's expression darkened. "Class S. The failures. They are… difficult. Their bodies are breaking down under the magicules. They have maybe a year left."

"I want to teach them," Rimuru said. "I want to find a way to stop the breakdown."

Yuuki sighed. "I won't stop you. But don't expect them to listen. They've given up on the world because the world gave up on them."

He wrote out a permit and stamped it.

"Freedom Academy. They're in the special wing. Good luck, Rimuru-sensei."

Rimuru took the paper. "Thanks, Yuuki."

As they turned to leave, Yuuki called out.

"Oh, and Nova-san?"

Nova paused, his hand on the door handle.

"Welcome to Ingrassia," Yuuki said, his voice cheerful but his eyes cold and devoid of light. "Try not to break anything. We like our order here."

Nova looked back over his shoulder. His mismatched eyes glowed.

"Order built on lies is just chaos waiting for a push," Nova whispered.

He opened the door and walked out.

Yuuki stared at the closed door. The smile vanished from his face instantly.

"Kagali," he whispered to the empty room.

A woman stepped out from behind a hidden panel. The former Demon Lord Kazaream, possessing a homunculus body.

"That man," Yuuki said, his voice low. "He's dangerous. I couldn't read him. I couldn't even sense the bottom of his energy."

"Should we eliminate them?" Kagali asked.

Yuuki picked up the manga volume, tapping the cover.

"No. Not yet. They're interesting. And Rimuru gave me the next chapter. Let's see how they handle the brats first. If they survive Class S… then we'll play."

The Freedom Academy

The academy was a pristine institution of learning, manicured lawns and white stone buildings. It was a place where the elite sent their children to become knights and mages.

And tucked away in the back, behind a rusted gate, was the building for the "Special Summons."

Rimuru stood before the classroom door, nervously smoothing her skirt.

"Okay. I'm a teacher. I can do this. I lead a nation of monsters. I can handle five human children."

Nova leaned against the wall, checking his pocket watch. "Children are crueler than monsters, Rimuru. They lack the capacity for mercy."

"You're not helping!"

Rimuru slid the door open. "Good morning, class! I'm your new—"

FWOOSH.

A ball of fire exploded in her face.

Rimuru reacted instantly, activating [Thermal Resistance] to absorb the heat, but the soot covered her face.

From inside the room, laughter erupted.

"Got him!"

"Another weakling!"

"Go home, loser!"

Inside, five children stood amidst a chaotic mess of overturned desks and broken books.

Kenya Misaki, a boy with spiky hair and a fire spirit affinity.

Ryota Sekiguchi, a timid boy with berserker potential.

Gale Gibson, the oldest and largest.

Alice Rondo, a blonde girl surrounded by floating puppets.

And in the back, reading a book, a small girl with black hair and eyes that held the abyss. Chloe Aubert.

Rimuru wiped the soot from her face, coughing. "That… was dangerous."

"Get out!" Kenya yelled, summoning another fireball. "We don't need another teacher to watch us die! Just leave us alone!"

He threw the fireball.

Rimuru prepared to catch it—

But the fireball didn't reach her.

It vanished.

Nova stepped into the doorway. He didn't look like a teacher. He looked like the heat death of the universe compressed into a suit.

He caught the fireball—not with magic, but by simply closing his hand around it. He crushed the flames into smoke.

The laughter died instantly.

Kenya froze. "W-what…"

Nova walked into the room. His footsteps were heavy, deliberate. The air grew cold. The sunlight streaming through the windows seemed to dim.

He stopped in front of Kenya. He looked down at the boy.

"Sit," Nova said.

It wasn't a shout. It was a command written into the fabric of the boy's brain.

Kenya's legs gave out. He sat.

Nova turned his gaze to the others. Alice's puppets dropped to the floor, their strings cut by sheer intimidation. Gale backed up against the chalkboard. Ryota hid under a desk.

Only Chloe looked up. She stared at Nova with an intensity that matched his own.

Nova held the silence for ten seconds. Long enough for the children to realize that this was not another disposable adventurer.

"My name is Nova," he said quietly. "This is Rimuru. She is too kind to hurt you. I am not."

He picked up a piece of chalk and wrote their names on the board.

"You are angry," Nova said, his back to them. "You are dying. You feel betrayed by the world that summoned you and then discarded you."

He turned around, his mismatched eyes sweeping the room.

"Good. Use that anger. But if you direct it at us again… I will treat you not as children, but as combatants."

He pointed at Rimuru.

"She is here to save your lives. I am here to ensure you behave long enough to be saved. Do we have an understanding?"

The children nodded furiously. Even Kenya.

"Excellent." Nova tossed the chalk to Rimuru. "You're up, Professor."

Rimuru caught the chalk, staring at Nova in awe. "You… you terrified them into submission."

"It is the only language they respect right now," Nova said, retreating to the corner of the room to stand guard.

Rimuru took a deep breath and faced the class. "Okay! Let's start over. I'm Rimuru. And I promise… we're going to find a way to fix your bodies."

As Rimuru began her lesson—trying to win them over with kindness now that Nova had established order—Nova's attention drifted to the back of the room.

Chloe Aubert.

The girl hadn't moved. She sat hugging a picture book, her dark eyes fixed on Nova.

She wasn't afraid.

Ciel. Scan Subject: Chloe.

<>

Nova's eyes narrowed slightly.

Chloe slowly lifted a hand and gave a tiny, hesitant wave.

It wasn't the wave of a child. It was the wave of someone acknowledging a peer across the gulf of time.

Nova didn't wave back. He simply nodded.

The Hero sealed within the child, Nova mused. The loop closer. The one who has saved Rimuru in a thousand other timelines.

But in this timeline, the variables had changed.

Nova watched the class. He saw the threads of fate tangling around them. Shizu's students. Destined for greatness, or destined for the grave.

"Let's see if we can rewrite this chapter too," Nova whispered.

Side Story: The Burden of Omniscience

(Excerpt from the Journal of Yuuki Kagurazaka)

Entry 402:

The slime came today. Rimuru Tempest. She's naive. Powerful, yes, but soft. She thinks she can save everyone. It's adorable. She handed me the manga like it was a treasure, completely unaware that she just funded my patience for another six months.

But the other one…

Nova. No last name. No history in the Guild database. No footprint in the world until a few months ago.

When he looked at me, I felt… seen. Not just visually. It felt like he was reading my character sheet. He knew about the mask. He hinted at the lies. He practically told me he knows I'm the mastermind.

And yet, he did nothing. He didn't attack. He didn't expose me.

Why?

Is he arrogant? Does he think I'm not a threat? Or is he waiting for something?

I hate it. I hate variables I can't control. I tried to analyze his power level, but my skills just returned a null value. It was like looking into a black hole.

Kagali is terrified of him. She says he smells like the 'End.'

I need to be careful. If Rimuru is the light that attracts people, Nova is the shadow that swallows them. I'll let them play teacher for now. But I need a contingency.

Maybe I should accelerate the Falmuth plan. If I can separate them… if I can break the slime… maybe the shadow will fade.

Or maybe… the shadow is the one I should really be afraid of.

Scene: The Playground

A week had passed. The children were… difficult, but improving. Rimuru had won them over with manga, candy, and genuine combat training.

Currently, they were in the training grounds. Rimuru was sparring with Kenya, easily dodging his sword swings.

"Too slow!" Rimuru laughed. "Use your legs, Kenya!"

Nova sat on a bench nearby, reading a book on spirit summoning.

Chloe sat next to him. She didn't speak. She just sat there, swinging her legs.

"You are quiet," Nova said, not looking up.

"You are loud," Chloe replied softly.

Nova turned a page. "I haven't spoken in an hour."

"Your soul," Chloe said. "It's loud. It hums. Like a machine."

Nova paused. He closed the book. He looked at the small girl.

"And yours is fractured," Nova said. "Like a mirror broken in time."

Chloe hugged her knees. "Will you save us?"

"Rimuru will save you."

"But you… will you save her?"

Nova stiffened.

Chloe looked up, her eyes flashing with a sudden, mature sharpness—the eyes of the Hero Chronoa peeking through.

"The darkness is coming," Chloe whispered. "The box. The blood. The scream. It happens every time. She dies. Or she changes. Or she loses herself."

She reached out and touched Nova's hand. Her fingers were cold.

"Please. Break the loop."

Nova stared at her. He saw the infinite cycles of suffering she had endured. The timelines where Rimuru died. The timelines where Rimuru became a monster devoid of heart.

He took her small hand in his gloved one.

"I am not part of your loop, little Hero," Nova said, his voice dropping to a rumble that vibrated the air. "I am the glitch."

He squeezed her hand gently.

"I will not let her fall. And I will not let you break."

Chloe stared at him, then smiled. It was a sad, beautiful smile.

"Okay. I believe you. Mr. Glitch."

She hopped off the bench and ran to join the others.

"Rimuru-sensei! Wait for me!"

Nova watched her run.

Ciel. The Spirit Dwelling.

<>

And that is where the future will be secured.

Nova stood up, brushing dust from his coat.

The pieces were moving. Falmuth was preparing its army. The Church was sharpening its blades. And here in a playground, a time-traveling hero just asked him to save the soul of a slime.

"No pressure," Nova muttered.

He looked at the sky, blue and clear over Ingrassia.

"Enjoy the sunlight, kids," he whispered. "Because when we get back to Tempest… the rain starts."

Side Story: The Committee of Narrative Review

Topic: The School Arc

JACW: "He threatened children. He literally walked into a classroom and traumatized them into obedience."

The One Above All (TOAA): "It was efficient. Rimuru tries the 'friend' approach. Nova uses the 'fear of god' approach. It's a classic Good Cop/Bad Cop dynamic."

The Presence: "The interaction with Chloe was significant. He acknowledged the loop. He essentially declared war on Canon itself."

JACW: "Also, can we talk about Yuuki? The man is sweating bullets. Nova basically walked into his office, pissed on his rug metaphorically, and walked out."

TOAA: "It creates tension. Yuuki acts because he's paranoid. If Nova had just killed him, the plot resolves too fast. By scaring him, Nova forces Yuuki to make mistakes. It's 4D chess."

JACW: "It's bullying. It's cosmic bullying."

The Presence: "I am interested in the Spirit Dwelling. Ramiris. Another Demon Lord. Will Nova bribe her with honey too?"

TOAA: "Probably. Or he'll just insult her until she helps them out of spite."

JACW: "I bet 50 universes on spite."

TOAA: "You're on."
