Adam moved deeper into the outpost, each step echoing through the ancient halls like a quiet intrusion into forgotten history. Outside, the desert wind howled and scraped across the metal husk of the installation, but within, there was only the hum of failing power cells and the brittle hush of neglect. It had been over fifty years since anyone set foot here—or so the reports claimed.
A transition from the previous chapter hung in the air like unfinished business. After decrypting the final layer of encryption from the mysterious coordinates, Adam had followed the trail to this abandoned facility tucked beneath a former Project Perseus launch site in Nevada.
A flicker from his HUD pulled his attention to a new datapoint. He approached a cracked console, its screen flickering erratically as if unsure whether it wanted to be alive again.
"Come on," Adam muttered, his fingers gliding over the interface. A low buzz, and the screen displayed a grainy menu:
ACCESS LOGS – SUBJECT 0 PROJECT FILES – RESTRICTED VAULT STATUS – ACTIVE
"Vault?" he whispered. He selected the file.
The display changed. A series of security camera feeds blinked to life, most static-filled and unreadable. But one showed a dimly lit chamber, a large containment unit glowing faintly in the center.
A sudden chill crept through his glove, though the air around him remained still. It wasn't cold. It was... wrong. Like the vacuum of space. His breath caught, and he stared at the feed.
Inside the vault, suspended in a tank of glowing containment fluid, was a humanoid figure. Massive. Muscled. Unmoving.
Subject 0.
Adam tapped into the project logs. Audio hissed to life.
Voice 1 (male, calm, but distant): "Subject 0 doesn't just possess antimatter—he is antimatter. If containment fails, he won't explode. He'll erase."
Voice 2 (female, analytical): "Yet the readings suggest... consciousness. Dormant, but still aware. There's brain activity. Neural patterns, even. Like he's dreaming."
Voice 1: "Let's pray he never wakes up."
Adam backed away from the console slightly, still staring at the screen. "Why hide this?" he murmured. "Why bury it under secrecy?"
A red alert flashed briefly across the screen.
EXTERNAL POWER INTEGRITY: FAILING
He cursed under his breath. "This place is falling apart."
Suddenly, a soft vibration trembled beneath his boots. Not from the system—something deeper.
He turned, weapon half-drawn. Then paused. Nothing.
Somewhere else—in a dim surveillance room lit only by aging monitors—a group of figures watched Adam.
"Subject Blue is progressing rapidly," one said, a gloved hand adjusting a dial.
"He's getting close," another murmured, voice heavy with anticipation. "Much faster than expected."
"Should we intervene?" asked a third, his tone uncertain.
The first figure shook his head. "Not yet. Let him dig. The truth will do more damage than we ever could."
A monitor buzzed faintly. The image of Adam—pausing before a massive steel blast door—filled the screen.
Back in the vault hallway, Adam approached the door. His fingers brushed the keypad, now glowing faintly blue as if responding to him.
A strange déjà vu swept over him. He frowned.
His hand hovered above the panel. Then he pressed it.
The door hissed, groaned, and then—slowly—opened.
Inside, submerged in that ominous glowing fluid, was a figure that looked… familiar. Taller, broader—but the facial structure. The outline. The presence.
Adam's eyes widened.
"No way," he whispered.
It was him.
An older version. Scarred. Contained.
Before he could process it, the containment fluid rippled—and the eyes of the figure inside snapped open.
Bright. Burning. Awake.
