Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Narrow Way

The tunnels were tighter here. The air felt colder, less forgiving, choked with dust and the scent of rusted iron. Pipes crisscrossed the low ceiling, some dripping water with a rhythmic plink-plink that echoed like a countdown. The walls narrowed in places, making it feel less like a passage and more like a throat, closing in. Shadows clung to every crevice, and the deeper they went, the more the world above seemed like a forgotten myth.

Eliza led the way, flashlight fixed to her jacket, the narrow beam cutting through the dark like a sword. Her boots splashed through shallow pools, sending ripples across the murky water. Behind her, Adam followed with uneven steps, one hand braced against the slimy tunnel wall.

He was weakening.

Adam stumbled again, this time dropping to one knee. His hand flickered—literally—as though the molecules that made him were undecided. His body sparked faint blue for a second before snapping back to normal. A sharp exhale escaped his lips.

"Come on," Eliza said, circling back to him. Her voice was sharp with urgency, but her eyes were filled with concern. "You're not glitching out on me now."

"My equilibrium's... off," he muttered, struggling to his feet. "Like I'm vibrating between states. Can't hold phase stability."

She offered her shoulder without hesitation. "Then lean. We're not dying in a sewer. Not today."

They pushed forward, Adam leaning heavily on her. The tunnel twisted and curved unpredictably, sometimes forcing them to crouch or squeeze through debris-choked bottlenecks. Old warning signs peeled off the walls, unreadable. The air tasted metallic, with an undercurrent of decay.

Behind them, the sounds of pursuit grew louder—boots pounding against metal, sharp military signals echoing off the damp walls, the eerie buzz of drones skimming the air like vultures.

Red lights danced briefly across the tunnel behind them, scanning.

"Drones," Eliza hissed. She fished out a small black disc from her belt pouch and tossed it to the side. It landed with a metallic clink and blinked once before letting out a faint pulse. The EMP grenade sent a dull thump through the ground—the lights behind them flickered, and then the drones stuttered mid-air, one crashing into the wall with a burst of sparks.

"That bought us maybe ninety seconds," she said. "Tops."

Adam said nothing, breathing hard. His fingers brushed the tunnel wall—and for a moment, the metal beneath his palm shimmered with subatomic energy before stabilizing again. His thoughts were fractured, fragments of memories clawing at his mind.

They reached a rickety crossover—a narrow steel walkway suspended over an old runoff channel. The dim lights from above revealed rust-eaten joints and loose bolts. Water trickled beneath them, sluggish and foul-smelling.

The platform groaned under Eliza's weight as she sprinted across, every step a gamble. One wrong move, and it would collapse.

Adam hesitated.

He stared at the jump ahead. The gap wasn't much—but something inside him warned: You won't make it.

His powers flickered again—faint bursts of unstable energy crackling along his arms, then vanishing. He clenched his fists, trying to summon strength that wouldn't come.

"Adam!" Eliza was already across, reaching out. "Come on!"

He ran. Launched himself. Mid-air, the surge he needed didn't come. His flight mode sputtered. Gravity took hold. He slammed into the edge of the platform, fingers barely gripping the ledge.

Eliza dropped to her knees and caught his wrist, veins straining as she pulled him up with all her strength.

He collapsed at her feet, chest heaving, face pale. For a second, she thought he might black out.

"Damn it," she muttered, brushing wet hair out of her face. "You've got to hold it together."

"I don't think it's just fatigue," Adam whispered. "I saw something. While I was out."

She looked at him, breathless and unnerved. "What kind of something?"

"Memories. Mine… but tampered with. Like someone edited my thoughts. Places I've never been. Missions I don't remember."

A chill ran down Eliza's spine. "Are you saying they rewired your mind?"

"I don't know. But it wasn't natural. It was like… someone left breadcrumbs inside my brain."

Before she could respond, a soft beep echoed through the tunnel.

From the ceiling above, a drone descended—small, black, quiet. Its red lens locked onto them like a predator scenting blood.

Then it spoke.

"Adam Brashear. You were warned. You don't walk away from what you are."

Eliza blinked. "It knows your name."

Adam's face froze. Not from surprise. From recognition.

He knew that voice. He hadn't heard it in years. A ghost from a past life.

It belonged to someone he thought had died.

"Run," Adam said, voice low. "Now."

The tunnel behind them exploded in light and heat—charges had been planted, and someone had just triggered them remotely. The entire ceiling behind them collapsed, metal screaming, water bursting in like a floodgate torn open.

They sprinted, splashing through rising water, slipping across slick concrete. Pipes burst and sparks flew from overhead. The sound was deafening.

Then Adam stopped.

Eliza turned, skidding to a halt. "What the hell are you doing?!"

Adam stood still, eyes closed, chest rising steadily. He was listening. Feeling. The vibrations in the metal. The shift in temperature. The pull on his core.

"Something's wrong," he said. "They're not just here for me. They want… the core."

The core inside him. The antimatter reactor. The source of his power. The one that had made him the Blue Marvel in the first place—and the one no one should have known still existed.

Another detonation shook the walls. A steel beam came crashing down, separating them.

"Adam!" Eliza screamed.

Then came the light.

A blinding pulse of blue surged out from his body. It wasn't controlled. It wasn't clean. It was raw, instinctual, a defense mechanism built into his DNA.

Energy flared, swallowing the noise, swallowing the rubble.

Then silence.

The tunnel was caved in. Water poured through the debris like a broken dam.

Eliza pushed herself up from the wreckage, coughing, blood on her lip. Her ears rang from the pressure, and for a moment, she couldn't hear her own breath.

"Adam?" she called.

No answer.

She dragged herself toward the last place she'd seen him. Smoke and dust made it hard to see. Her hand scraped across cracked stone and scorched metal.

"Adam!"

Still nothing.

Just darkness.
