Chapter 45 - Chapter 45: The Peace

Morning sunlight spilled through the thin paper screens of the machiya, soft and pale, like it was unsure whether it was allowed inside.

Yuki lay flat on the tatami, arms spread, staring at the ceiling.

He had been awake for twenty minutes.

Not because of nerves.

Because someone was drooling on his shoulder.

"…You're doing it again," he muttered.

Luna shifted slightly but did not wake. Her face was pressed against his arm, breath slow and steady. She had left the bed very early in the morning and joined Yuki on the tatami.

Yuki sighed.

He didn't move.

Across the room, Yukari sat cross-legged near the window, tying her hair with practiced ease. Morning light caught in the strands of her blue hair, turning it almost translucent.

"She's comfortable," Yukari said lazily.

"Don't complain."

"She kicked me three times in her sleep."

"She's ten."

"She kicked me with intent."

Yukari smiled faintly. "You'll survive."

Kira's voice drifted through Yuki's ear, dry and amused. "You always say that. And yet you look like a sacrificial offering."

"Good morning to you too," Yuki muttered.

Despite everything, the house felt… right.

Quiet. Safe.

Too safe.

They had settled into a rhythm over the past ten days. Yukari cooked. Yuki cleaned. Luna hovered between them like a magnet, learning by observation, absorbing everything. Yukari was strict when she needed to be, sharp-tongued and proud, but her protectiveness wrapped around Luna like armor.

And Yuki watched.

Always watching.

Noticing how Luna's strength crept upward each day. He wasn't even sure she had a kizo, although her blood was unique and could expel people's kizo she didn't seem to have any kizo. But her physical strength was increasing.

Potential.

Dangerous potential.

That morning, after breakfast, Yukari clapped her hands once.

"Alright," she said. "Brat. Come here."

Luna perked up instantly.

Yukari glanced at Yuki. "We'll show you something."

Yuki blinked. "…Show her what?

"The thing," Yukari said flatly.

Yuki froze. "No."

"Yes."

"That's not a party trick."

"It's educational."

"It fries the air."

Yukari leaned closer, smirking. "You're scared."

"I am being responsible."

She grabbed his hand.

Before he could protest she held both his hands tightly.

"Watch carefully," Yukari said.

Yuki sighed in defeat and interlaced his fingers with Yukari's.

The moment their palms touched, the air changed.

Temperature dropped.

Humidity spiked.

Ice crept outward from Yuki's skin, crystalline and sharp, while water condensed instantly around Yukari's hand, spiraling, spinning.

Then—

Blue lightning crackled into existence.

Not violent.

Not chaotic.

Beautiful.

It danced between them, arcing gently, illuminating the room in soft flashes. Luna's breath caught as she stared, eyes wide.

Lightning born from contrast.

Ice and water.

Stillness and flow.

"This happens," Yukari explained calmly, "because your brother's Kizo lowers the temperature so fast that my water destabilizes."

Yuki added, "Friction between ice crystals and droplets. Same principle as real lightning."

The arcs hummed, alive, controlled.

Luna whispered, "It's… pretty."

Yukari released Yuki's hand. The lightning vanished instantly.

Yuki watched Luna quietly.

"She's growing fast." Kira murmured.

"Too fast."

School awaited.

Lunch break buzzed louder than usual.

Everyone knew.

The tournament was tomorrow.

Yuki sat at the table with Mika, Derek, Sophia, and Seri, eating like someone who had never seen food before.

"Slow down," Mika muttered. "You'll choke."

Yuki shoved another bite into his mouth. "If I die, tell Yukari it was her cooking."

Derek snorted. "You're insane."

Sophia folded her hands neatly. "Your heart rate is elevated," she noted. "But not from anxiety."

Seri watched him silently.

Yuki was… bright today.

Not cheerful exactly, but alive in a way that bordered on reckless. His shoulders were relaxed. His eyes sharp. He talked about tomorrow like a child talking about a festival.

"I get to fight strong people," he said happily. "A lot of them."

"That's not a normal reaction," Mika said.

Sophia nodded. "Kinatarou bloodlines are known to derive pleasure from combat. However…"

She glanced at Yuki.

"This level of excitement is excessive."

Seri finally spoke. "You're not scared at all?"

Yuki tilted his head. "Why would I be?"

They stared at him.

"The stage," he continued, gesturing vaguely. "The audience. Ren. Derek. Other schools. It's all the same. Just… louder."

Derek frowned. "You know school ends right after, right?"

Yuki nodded. "Yeah. I leave early. I'm going on a training vacation with Seri's father."

"Training vacation?" Mika looked at Yuki puzzled. "You really like making up weird terms."

Seri's fingers tightened slightly around her utensils.

"Training with Lord Genji. Do your best." Sophia added calmly.

Yuki smiled. "Yup."

The table fell quiet.

"That means after tomorrow we won't see you until summer break is over." Mika added.

"Yeah. I guess."

Seri stood abruptly. "Walk with me."

Yuki blinked. "Huh?"

"Now."

She didn't wait.

They walked the perimeter of the school grounds, away from the noise, into the shade of old trees. Cicadas buzzed lazily in the heat.

Seri stopped beneath one of them.

"Sit," she said.

Yuki obeyed, dropping onto the grass.

She sat beside him, close enough that their shoulders almost touched.

Almost.

"You're leaving," Seri said softly.

"For training," Yuki replied. "I'll be back. And you've been aware of this since the beginning, so what's with the mood?"

She looked at him then, really looked.

Still a teenager.

Still careless in the wrong ways.

Still carrying weight he pretended not to feel.

"You don't hesitate," she said.

"I don't see the point," he answered.

Seri exhaled slowly.

Then, without warning, she leaned forward and rested her forehead against his shoulder.

Yuki stiffened. "Seri?"

"Just be quiet," she said.

He was.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

The wind stirred her hair, brushing against his neck. Her presence was calm, grounding. Not demanding. Not desperate.

Just… there.

"You walk toward danger like it's inevitable," she said quietly. "Like you've already accepted it."

Yuki looked down at his hands. "Someone has to."

Seri's fingers curled into the fabric of his sleeve.

"I'll walk with you," she said. "As long as you're moving forward."

He smiled faintly. "I know."

She lifted her head, green eyes steady.

"But understand this," she added. "Tomorrow isn't the real danger."

He met her gaze.

"What comes after is."

She stood, smoothing her uniform, composure returning like armor.

"Don't lose tomorrow," she said. "But don't break either."

Yuki watched her walk away.

Kira sighed in his mind.

"She's choosing you. Fully. Be careful what that costs."

"What do you mean by that?" Yuki asked.

"You're stupidly dense. You'll find out soon enough." Kira commented.

Evening arrived quietly.

Back at the machiya, Luna fell asleep early, curled up with a blanket Yukari had bought without asking.

Yuki sat on the porch steps, staring at the darkening sky.

Tomorrow.

Yukari joined him, handing him a drink.

"You look calm," she said.

"I am."

She studied him sideways. "That's what worries me."

He smiled slightly.

Lightning flickered faintly in the distance sky.

And as night settled over the house, the world held its breath.

Because tomorrow, everything would change.
