Chapter 159 - Chapter 159: Joining the Guild

Makarov heard everything without interrupting.

When Noah finished, the old man was quiet for a long moment, sitting with the weight of what he'd been told and turning it over carefully. His expression had settled into the particular stillness he used when something genuinely concerned him and he was deciding what to do with that concern.

"Grimoire Heart," he said finally, more to himself than to Noah.

He let it sit.

The situation had layers that didn't resolve cleanly. Grimoire Heart conducting a mass killing on that scale was not unprecedented for a guild of their standing, but it was significant. Events like this didn't happen without a purpose. Dark Guilds at that tier didn't expend that kind of effort, draw that kind of attention, and invite that kind of Council response without something substantial behind it. The problem was that the scene had given them almost nothing to work with. No obvious ritual preparation. No clear evidence of a specific spell being cast. Too little left behind to build a picture from.

"You said someone issued a warning from a distance," Makarov said. "And your read was that they were stronger than me."

"That's my read, yes. I think it was the Guild Master of Grimoire Heart. The warning had that kind of weight behind it."

Makarov absorbed this without visible reaction, which was its own kind of reaction.

"We can't determine their objective from what we have," he said. "Which means we prepare for what we can prepare for." He looked at Noah directly. "You, Erza, and the others disrupted their operation. That won't go unnoticed by people who operate the way they do. Everyone needs to be more alert than usual, and I mean everyone in the guild, not just the ones who were there."

He paused, something shifting in his expression toward something that was close to relief.

"The crests were a good decision. The communication, the protective functions. That's real safety we have now that we didn't have before."

"I'll pass the warning along to Erza and the others when I get back," Noah said.

"See that you do." Makarov folded his hands together. "I'll reach out to my contacts at the Council and see if anything has come up on their end. Any intelligence about Grimoire Heart's movements, any pattern to what happened. If something develops, I'll need to know immediately."

"Understood."

A brief pause, and then Makarov's expression shifted into something slightly different. Still serious, but with a quality underneath it that Noah recognized.

"The girl you brought back. Meredy."

"She needs to join the guild," Noah said. "She's been through too much to leave her somewhere without anchors. She's already attached to Erza and the others, and the guild can give her the kind of stability she needs right now." He laid out the practical side of it. "There's room at the house. Erza, Ultear, and Sorano are already there, they'll look after her properly. All it needs is your approval."

Makarov was quiet for approximately two seconds.

"Bring her in when she's steadied enough," he said. "We'll handle the paperwork then."

Noah nodded and stood.

"I'll head back. Goodbye, Grandpa."

"Mm."

He used instant movement and stepped out of the guild hall and into his own living room in one motion.

The atmosphere in the room told him something had happened before anyone said a word. Ultear, Sorano, Wendy, and Carla were all present, all sitting, all wearing versions of the same subdued expression.

"What's wrong?"

"I told them about Meredy," Ultear said.

He understood immediately. He looked around the room and saw it in each of them: the particular quality of people who had heard something that sat too close to their own histories to stay at a comfortable distance. The Sorano sisters especially. They'd lived a version of that night. Different in its specifics, the same in its shape.

"Where's Erza?"

"Still with Meredy. She can't settle. She keeps waking up scared."

Noah looked toward the hallway, then back at the room.

"I'll start dinner," he said. "We can talk when Erza comes out."

Ultear and Sorano got up without being asked and followed him into the kitchen. The act of having something practical to do helped, as it usually did. They worked through the meal preparation without forcing conversation, and the kitchen filled with the sounds and smells of something normal being made, which was its own small thing.

By the time dinner was ready and on the table, Erza had emerged from Meredy's room. She sat down and Noah passed along Makarov's response: the warning about elevated vigilance, the approval for Meredy's membership, the plan to wait until she was more stable before bringing her in officially.

Everyone listened and understood.

What came after was a practical discussion. Erza, Ultear, and Sorano reached the same conclusion independently and said it together: no quests for the next week or two. They'd stay. Look after Meredy, watch for any follow-up from Grimoire Heart, and reassess once the situation had more shape to it.

Noah told them he supported this, and that he'd use the time to look into Dark Guild activity on his end.

Nobody pushed for more detail than that.

After dinner, the house settled into the quiet of people winding down. Dishes were cleared, things were put away, and one by one everyone moved toward sleep.

Morning came.

Meredy woke up in an unfamiliar room and immediately registered that the people she'd been with weren't there.

She came out of the room crying, moving through the unfamiliar hallway with the urgency of someone very small in a very large amount of distress, and found Ultear in the living room.

The collision was more fall than hug, but Ultear caught her and held on, crouching down to her level and keeping her voice low and steady, talking her back from the edge of it. It took a while. These things took as long as they took, and Ultear didn't rush it.

Eventually Meredy's breathing evened out and she stopped shaking.

Breakfast helped. Having people around the table helped. Ordinary things, moving at an ordinary pace, helped in ways that were hard to articulate but were real.

After the meal, Ultear and Erza and Sorano took Meredy toward the guild. Wendy came too, with Carla in her arms, the two of them staying close to Meredy's side with the easy warmth they brought to most things. Yukino fell in alongside them, drawn by the same instinct. Noah followed at a slight distance, watching.

The guild hall was its usual morning self when they came through the door: loud, already in motion, the smell of breakfast still in the air competing with everything else that made Fairy Tail smell like Fairy Tail.

Makarov welcomed Meredy with the exact energy Noah had predicted. The paperwork was completed, the mark was applied, and then Makarov turned to the hall and made the announcement in the way he made announcements, which was at full volume and with full commitment.

The response from the guild was immediate and total.

Meredy pressed herself against Erza's side and grabbed her clothes. The wave of guild members moving toward her with expressions of delight was not a small wave, and Ultear stepped smoothly into the gap between Meredy and the loudest of the approaching members, creating a buffer without making it look like a buffer. The male members who had reached the front of the crowd and were expressing their appreciation for how cute she was found themselves rerouted without entirely understanding how.

Erza steered Meredy to a table at the edge of the hall, away from the main surge, and Sorano and the others filled in around her. Food appeared. Drinks appeared. The noise of the guild continued at its normal register but at a safer distance, and Meredy sat in the middle of it with wide eyes and both hands around a cup that was warm.

Noah watched her face from across the hall.

The grief was still there. It would be there for a long time. But underneath it, working at the edges of it, something else was starting to move. The warmth of the hall was doing what warmth did when it was genuine, which was find the cracks and work its way in slowly whether or not the person let it.

Her expression wasn't better. But it was less entirely closed than it had been yesterday.

He crossed to the table, leaned down, said a few quiet words to Erza and the others. A few things to keep in mind, a few things to watch for. They listened and nodded.

"Be careful," Erza said, meeting his eyes with a seriousness that wasn't asking.

"I will be," Noah said.

He left the guild.

The Dark Guild he'd had on record was operating out of a location he'd identified weeks earlier and filed away for the appropriate moment. That moment had arrived.

He circled the perimeter first, extended his senses through the structure, counted what was inside, and then set up the array. Containment first: a magical field that blocked outgoing transmission completely, no signals, no communication, no warning sent to anyone connected to them. Concealment second, folded over everything, reducing the likelihood of the operation drawing outside attention.

Then he went in.

He didn't use anything heavy. Heavy magic meant noise, and noise meant attention, and this wasn't a situation that benefited from either. Wood Make Magic instead, precise and quiet, growing through doorways and around corners with a speed and control that left the members inside very little time to organize a response. One by one, then in groups, until the building was still.

The interrogations were methodical. He moved through them with the same efficiency he applied to research, asking the same questions in different ways, cross-referencing answers, looking for anything that connected back to Grimoire Heart's operation. Why an entire town. What the target was. Whether anyone above them in the network had said anything that suggested a larger purpose.

Nothing. They knew Grimoire Heart had done it. They were as confused as everyone else, and more than a little nervous about what the Council's response would mean for their own operations.

He cleaned out the guild's holdings completely. Money, valuables, anything of worth, all of it packed up and removed. Then he reached Harris on the Council contact line, passed along the location without attaching his name to it, and moved on.

Harris had been on his radar for years. Enough observation to establish a pattern: no corruption that Noah had ever found, no situations where he'd taken the convenient exit over the right one, no evidence of the kind of flexible ethics that made Council members useful to people who operated in the dark. A person worth using for this kind of work, and someone who understood without needing it explained that some assistance came with conditions attached.

The same process repeated across the following days. Guild after guild, each one dismantled quietly, each one interrogated for what they knew, each one cleaned out and handed off to Harris for processing. Noah moved through them with a consistency that came from practice and a lack of hesitation that came from having done this before, a long time ago, for different reasons.

The network thinned behind him.

None of them knew what Grimoire Heart had been doing in that city. The gap in their knowledge was too consistent to be coordinated deception. They genuinely didn't know, which meant the information either didn't exist at this level of the hierarchy or was being kept much further up than anyone he'd found could reach.

What he came away with was a significant sum of money and no answers.

He filed both results and kept moving.
