Chapter 98 - CHAPTER 98 (S4)

Perry sat at a counter, staring down at the useless chemicals she had spilled. Biology and Chemistry were her least favourite subjects. This included both. They had gotten the message from the organization that they were on the way towards the first lab.

"They'll be fine, right?" Rexine spoke, a little worried for them, considering how Emily had put the situation earlier. 'Getting followed by a horde of zombies. We might not make it.' and if that wasn't ominous enough, she had left Axelle's reply on delivered for the next 30 minutes.

And since they had been waiting for around an hour now, they were starting to get more and more worried by the second. Nicole had been reading the labels of the chemicals and solutions. He was a total nerd, so of course he knew what each and every one of them were. Christian was lost, unsure what part he took in helping with the operation. Dave was entertaining Maverick. Or, vice versa. Darren and Eli were sort of making up conspiracy theories. Rexine, Axelle and Waylen bunched up around the file, discussing what seemed suspicious and what didn't. Also which information they could trust and which information they couldn't. The whole group was practically just doing random things, boredom having gotten to them.

"Hm.. that might work. Since we aren't experts, maybe that'd be the smart thing to do." Darren replied, to Eli who nodded.

"If they don't answer, we really have a problem." Eli sighed, leaning back in his seat.

It wasn't until they heard shuffling around the door they went silent. Perry's head snapped up to see if she could see anything beyond the dirty glass slab on the door. Which, unfortunately she couldn't. The door handle rattled once, then twice. Silence, before a sharp, rather loud voice cut through.

"Seriously, if you guys are in there could you open up?!" an irritated Alice snapped, grabbing the door handle a few more times, each time more aggressive than the last. A collective sigh of relief from the group was heard, before Perry walked up to the door and warily opened it, despite clearly hearing Alice's distinctive voice. It was about time they arrived. Alice basically threw herself in the room, the organization following suit.

"About time!" she wailed, looking like she had run a few miles non-stop. Sweating and everything, yeah. Perry stepped aside, letting them come inside.

The rest of them stared, Christian taking note of the full backpack they seemed to have. "Did you get everything?" He asked, mainly looking at Nathan.

"Yeah, uh.." he mumbled, swinging the bag off his shoulder onto a chair nearby. "Here."

Nicole stood, slowly walking towards the bag himself. He opened it, and looked over at Axelle, gesturing for her to bring over the file. Just to make sure they really got everything that they needed. Which, thankfully they had.

"Shall we get started, then?" He spoke, starting to take the stuff out of the bag, onto the counter instead.

Following the instructions written on the file, they started— technically Nicole. Nicole was the only one entrusted for the job of adding the exact amounts and making sure each solution was the right one. It wasn't entirely voluntary or willing— but more or so voted by majority. It was scary, Nicole couldn't lie. The pressure was great, yet, he took his time with it. He told everyone to stay at least 5 feet away from him, afraid of messing up otherwise. The only ones who actually just sat away and waited were Nathan, Eli, Darren and Millie.

Nicole wore those big clear glasses, to protect his eyes. Sleeves rolled to his elbows. But great. He had added too much of a chemical he wasn't supposed to— and again, he failed. This was at least the 8th attempt. They still had the solutions, they weren't running low. The only problem being adding things in the wrong order or either adding too much of one thing and ruining all the process. He groaned, pushing the test tube away and taking the glasses off and throwing them to the side.

"This is impossible!" He exclaimed, leaning back in his chair. He ran a hand through his hair, glancing at the file. "Don't we also need blood with the most antibodies?"

Perry, who had the file approached him, eyes on the file as she replied. "Yeah. Meaning we sort of have to test everyone here."

".. Guys." Eli started, abruptly standing up. "..Do you think the police services would answer if we called?" The whole room silenced, even Maverick who usually never caught the air in a room.

"..We could try?" Rexine replied. "It's not a half bad idea. We'd.. actually receive more help if we did that."

With a subtle nod, Eli took his phone and dialed 911. It rang. Once, twice, thrice.. And then they picked up. Even the receiver seemed suspicious by the sudden call. She wasn't formal, not as formal as one would and should be usually.

"Hello..? Police here, What's your emergency.. I guess?" Well if that wasn't unprofessional, they didn't know what was. But she seemed confused.

"What's my emergency? Well, aren't you just our little comedian." Waylen blurted out before Axelle physically reached out and covered his mouth. She shushed him. The woman on the other end seemed amused, almost.

"..Right. It's rare that any group calls 911. After.. Well, the whole thing started."

"Well, we might need your help. You still do that, right?" Waylen spoke once again, yet the phone was still in Eli's hand.

"..Uh, I suppose? Where are you guys?" So, they disclosed their location. The woman went silent for a moment and sighed. "Alright, police forces will arrive within.. maybe 30 minutes to an hour." she explained, then hung up. Waylen wasn't liking how the woman spoke to them. But she was probably just as surprised and puzzled as to why they were getting an emergency call approximately 7-8 months AFTER the emergency. Meaning the start of the apocalypse.

"Guess we have to gather everything and wait.." Perry exhaled, leaning back.
