I walked over to where Maya and Victoria were standing near the wall-mounted television in the private hospital lounge. Maya's eyes were fixed on the screen.
The news channel had shifted to a business segment, and the ticker at the bottom of the display announced that her company — now fully merged with Victoria's under a new joint structure — had already appointed a new CEO in her absence.
The report spoke in calm, professional language about "stabilizing operations" and "ensuring continuity during the prolonged disappearance of key leadership." Footage of the corporate headquarters and a brief clip of the newly named executive filled the screen.
Maya's voice came out quiet and tight, almost hollow.
"…They've already replaced me. Just like that. As if I was never there."
I reached out and took her hand, wrapping my fingers firmly around hers. Her skin was cool. I gave it a steady, reassuring squeeze and met her eyes.
